@dramypsyd @Alchemist_Final Just did a search for minerals. Over 30,000 images! Thank you, Dr. Amy!
@dramypsyd
What a treasure...Im lost for words
@dramypsyd I like to make GIANT WALL MURALS with museums images.
@dramypsyd Amazing! And the AI scrapers will assimilate these inputs in 3, 2, 1…
@dramypsyd With this post you have made me a very, very happy person.🤩
Search for #soccer in the Smithsonian archive, and only 1 photo shows up (along with a lot of plant illustrations). I feel… unrecognized and ignored… 😥😁 @dramypsyd #soccer
@dramypsyd Are these available in the normal CC search tool?
@amyipdev I haven’t tried yet but their website search tool is super easy to use!
@dramypsyd Excellent! This kind of access really boosts knowledge where otherwise, it may not be. The indexing certainly needs a lot of work; my searches for 'Marconi' resulted in dozens of images of dried plants, but only two radio-related items. The same happened with other search terms.

@dramypsyd Sometimes I boost something just because it looks vaguely interesting, but I kept going and checked this one out. Wow.

Got to pause here and point out that #artist s, #journalist s, #writer s and #history ians really need to STOP WHATEVER THEY ARE DOING and check out the #Smithsonian link in the toot above.

#Archive of 4 million HIGH QUALITY #opensource images, tagged exhaustively.

Game changer. Case in point: one of scores of images on #baseball great #SatchelPaige:

@dramypsyd Thanks for sharing, this is really impressive. I can’t wait to poke around
@dramypsyd apparently, CC0-licensed. Not bad!

@rysiek @dramypsyd That's nice. I notice that they have a lot of CC0 images of ancient artefacts. I might use those in https://gitlab.com/bashrc2/AberMUSH

@dramypsyd Amazing indeed! Thanks for sharing this info! I'm always searching open source and public domain items.
@dramypsyd These even have decent descriptions. I'm hoping people remembered when they use them, to include them as alt text.

@dramypsyd

very cool. thanks for sharing it; I just shared it to a bunch of FB friends who have grandkids, etc. or who are photographers, etc. Nice to see you.
carry on.

@dramypsyd do they have rights to publish things by named artists or, perhaps more importantly, unnamed artists?
@dramypsyd I have been spreading the word about this today. Incredible resource for many uses.
@dramypsyd This is great. Thank you!
@dramypsyd wow, maybe they should give back the estimated 1,400 remains of Seminole ancestors who the Smithsonian Museum are holding against the wishes of that tribe. They have an estimated 12,000 human remains, and massive numbers of objects with no clear ownership history, or documented histories of having been looted.
@samalder yes they absolutely should! Thank you for sharing, I didn’t know they had human remains. That’s not ok!
@dramypsyd wow, Doctor, this is amazingly beautiful. Thank you for this news. Greetings from another place of the Fediverse.
@dramypsyd I gave it a try. Typed “fashion” and (among other things) found this, a portrait of Samuel Douchy, whoever that was. :-) More information in image description.
@dramypsyd I found an old Edwardian crochet manual through the Smithsonian! It really is a blessing haha
@dramypsyd Dr Amy I’m so grateful you posted this amazing resource! Thank you!
