@nextcloud was always a fantastic solution to have a cloud that respects your #privacy, but it lacked a few features #Google and #Apple (and even#Microsoft) offered.

Not so anymore, with Nextcloud Hub 3. Photo editing tools, optional and private face recognition, improved communication features, a new design (that I really enjoy on my server), and more: Here are 5 updates that make #Nextcloud a no-brainer to replace your privacy invasive ecosystem:

5 NEXTCLOUD UPDATES that will make you ditch Google & Apple

@thelinuxEXP @nextcloud My god, you're one of them, a light theme guy?
@Madagascar_Sky @nextcloud Mostly, yeah. Dark mode when using my computer in dimly lit environments, but if si have a light source anywhere that could be reflected on the display, then light mode makes it way easier to use my computer
@thelinuxEXP @nextcloud La la la la I can't hear you la la la. Heretic!
@thelinuxEXP @nextcloud „nextcloud respects your privacy“? Where do I find this version of nextcloud?
All kidding aside, nextcloud is privacy-invasive, on top of their bad performance and catastrophic upgrades (been through the pain for about 3 years before getting rid of it). Oh and the mobile apps are a bugfest.

@nehu @nextcloud Reading their answer to that, it’s all very reasonable, and it’s not like their yet scanning the data itself…

Overblown reaction, IMO.

@thelinuxEXP @nextcloud Light theme?! Unsubscribed and video reported!
On a more serious note, this video might be the kick up the arse I needed to add Nextcloud on my TrueNAS box, I really need to cut down on my Google services, especially Photos
@smallpipe @nextcloud I’d say Nextcloud is now a very competent Google Photos replacement
@thelinuxEXP @nextcloud Nextcloud is astonishingly useful and very easy to manage. I recommend @murena if you don't want to self-host
@thelinuxEXP @nextcloud well this is exciting. I'm already in the process of completely redoing my nextcloud instance as I did it originally with the truenas plugin and that doesn't allow me to update correctly so I'll get to start fresh with all the new updates!
@thelinuxEXP great Video! I don't understand where you store your data while using Nextcloud through VPS. Can you link the storage to your NAS? And which plan do you recommend on linode for Nextcloud? What specs should I choose for a good experience?
@niko The data is stored on the server itself :) The base shared CPU Linode is enough for most use cases, and if the storage they have isn’t enough you can add more later through the interface without having to upgrade the Linode itself (so it costs less)
@thelinuxEXP thanks! But than you still have your data on a computer of someone else 🤨 why is this ok?

@niko you don’t own the computer, but any good VPS provider will never access what is on your server. Your system is running in a VM inside of a powerful server, it’s not like they can super easily just look at all the files.

That’s how all companies work: they store their data on some kind of infrastructure. Although if that’s not good enough for your needs, you can always just self host at home

@thelinuxEXP I’m just trying to unterstand :) for me it is way better than doing it on my own as the maintenance is too difficult for me. So I’m glad you teached me about VPS!
@thelinuxEXP hey Nick, how do you backup your Nextcloud? I have now my own VPS, thank you :)
@niko I personally use the backup feature of Linode!
@thelinuxEXP @nextcloud this time I really need to make my server accessible from outside or else I'll abandon it again. I'm really interested, but I'm still missing some front ends on iOS.

I had this same issue. if a public ip is not practical or is too much effort, maybe tailscale will work.

It's like an open source mesh vpn that connects your devices with the data being end to end encrypted. With this your devices can connect to your nextcloud server so long as both the server and device are both on the same tailnet.

Just my solution to that though, it may not work out for you.

Tailscale

Tailscale is a zero config VPN for building secure networks. Install on any device in minutes. Remote access from any network or physical location.

Hi. I really like both the video and podcast versions. I see that the podcast version of that video is not yet there. Do you plan to make a podcast version of every video or will it be for some of them?

Thank you for your work. I listen to podcasts and videos while I work to keep up with tech news and yours are the best so far for open source over view. I like the more informational then LTT but fun format you have.

@jacket @nextcloud The podcast is only for the news videos, once a week! Other videos will stay video only :)

@thelinuxEXP @nextcloud

Is nextcloud encrypted in a way the host can't see your files? I know that it is a problem with mastodon. Private conversations are visible by the host.

@jacket @nextcloud That’s a problem for everything that doesn’t have E2E (every social network, Google Drive, and a lot more).

Nextcloud isn’t E2E either!

@thelinuxEXP @jacket @nextcloud As a quick comment in case is worth for anybody if focusing on a cloud file solution, Seafile encrypts the files stored in it plus the sync is designed to be very fast and efficient.

Beyond that, great news the update, I like what I see and I might give it a go (again).
@thelinuxEXP it can be, and nextcloud Talk is

@thelinuxEXP @nextcloud But Nextcloud Hub is just a set of apps for Nextcloud 😉
@arnandegans @nextcloud Hub 3 was the name of the whole update, or at least that’s how they presented it
@thelinuxEXP @nextcloud Hmm... I wonder if I can update to that then if it's a "new" product.
In my setup, NC 24, it's a app bundle.
@thelinuxEXP @nextcloud I've installed Nextcloud on my TrueNAS server and have been very impressed with its features so far! Happy to see it continue to get better!

@thelinuxEXP Loved the nextcloud video. Super excited about setting up my own server for it. I saw Louis Rossmann's latest video as well in my subscription feed and thought you might want to watch it given your recent switch to an iPhone.

@thelinuxEXP @nextcloud
Hi, Nick, can you make a video on how to setup Nextcloud for beginners if you have time? I've seen many YouTube tuts on how to do that but it's unclear and I get stuck in the middle.
@thelinuxEXP I am quite a noob and I managed to setup my own home server with Nextcloud and Dietpie on Odroid HC4, with 2 disks (live + backup). Main goal - stop paying Google/Microsoft for cloud storage. Could not be happier...
@thelinuxEXP @nextcloud Great video, thanks. Really (re)ignited my interest in Nextcloud. I guess the biggest thing holding me back is not knowing enough about the server security side of things - how to ensure my server (either home or in the cloud) doesn't get compromised, or at least what I need to do to minimise the risks. I guess running a home server without remote access is something, but would then lose the ability to use it except at home. So if there's any advice for this...

This has made me want to convert my trunas to scale and set up a new nextcloud instance up and running
