Finally a starry night here on Waiheke. I took a few photographs, using a Pixel 6 and a tissue box as a makeshift tripod.
More stars in last night's sky. This time with additional cloud action...
@neilhimself It looks like the sky is coming to give you a hug.
@neilhimself it's just amazing how the pixel line can take these photos. i can point it at my bright suburban night sky, wait a couple minutes, and my god
@neilhimself I snapped this one on Monday morning just before Dawn. The moon shining through the clouds gave the landscape a ghostly glow.

@neilhimself

The sky is the best place for stars.

It's when they fall out of the sky and hit the ground that you have problems.

Just ask the dinosaurs.

Oh, wait. We can't.

@davidtheeviloverlord @neilhimself meteors are not stars... but I get what you mean
@neilhimself This last one looks like a teddy bear thrown into space
@neilhimself it looks as if there is an (almost) entity trying to reach out from the sky!
@neilhimself a cosmic fat cat coming in for a hug 🤩
@neilhimself gosh I hope my pics turn out as gorgeously as this one
@neilhimself oh wow. That's gorgeous.
@neilhimself great shot! That mode works very well.
@neilhimself It's a lovely bit of the world, isn't it. And a good place to wonder about other worlds.
@neilhimself Gorgeous, and what a great location. I have such fond memories of having eaten at Mudbrick on the island.
@neilhimself ah, what a beautiful sky! ✨️
@neilhimself ah in kiwiland again!?
@neilhimself Cripes, that's nice. And such good starlight considering you're so close to Auckland!
@neilhimself ah that's a great reminder to try my astro mode, too. ❤️
@neilhimself lovely. I really need to get out of the city so I can enjoy similar sights. As it happens, I’ve been reading Tristan Gooley’s The Walker's Guide to Outdoor Clues and Signs and last night’s chapter was about using the stars for navigation and as a clock. https://micro.blog/books/9781444780109
The Walker's Guide to Outdoor Clues and Signs

@josephaleo @neilhimself
Sounds like an interesting read.

I've reserved it at my local #library

@josephaleo @neilhimself

Just picked it up and started reading.

So far - fascinating. Thanks for the recommendation
👍

@coffee2Di4 @neilhimself I used what I learned about using a crescent moon for navigation tonight. 😀
@coffee2Di4 @neilhimself just to be clear, I didn’t use the moon to navigate anywhere in particular, I was just able to use the moon to determine where south was. Still pretty cool.
@neilhimself it’s amazing to think about all those stars, hundreds of miles away, constantly spinning around us

@neilhimself is this a setting on the pixel 6?

I use a galaxy s21 and setup using pro mode and I get decent results. But this seems quite amazing.

@reaply yes. Night mode, and if on a tripod and looking at stars it will go into astrophotography mode.
@neilhimself I asked StarryAi to create an astrophoto above Waiheke, too. I prefer yours.
@neilhimself This is just fantastic. I find the night sky so magical.
@neilhimself nice shot, given the limitations of the equipment!
@neilhimself What brand of tissues? I need to up my game.
@neilhimself That's a sky made for adventures that is. Bet there's magic up in them stars.
Beautiful photo.
@neilhimself Your night sky photos are the only things that have ever tempted me to switch to Android.
@neilhimself A city lies deep on hilly land—quiet, attentive, with yellow lights scattered on every house. The sky kisses earth’s midnight face as the mist spirals layers of light, thick with stars ever so bright—orbs birthing portals of other worlds waiting to be discovered. The city stares bare and wanting wear, breathing airs that chill streets—even trees shiver at the mercy of cold winds, of fragile fog spinning sky’s sacred secrets—when day dismisses sun for a starry night.
@neilhimself Great use of a tissue box. Good thing you didn't have to sneeze.
@neilhimself where is this beauty ?
@neilhimself
That's glorious. Sophisticated equipment too 😊
@neilhimself /me waves from just down the road (but not in a creepy way)
@neilhimself For contrast, I took this on Waiheke on Christmas Eve a few weeks ago.
@neilhimself wow this is beautiful. Ty for sharing it. Had to google where it is. It’s stunning, I’m starting bucket list because of this pic!
@neilhimself ... and made the acquaintance of a being with knitted brows and wild hair looming over the trees.
@neilhimself I really need to use a tripod or something for night shots. I always hold my Pixel 6 Pro and the shots never look this good.
@neilhimself For a smartphone photograph that’s remarkable.

@neilhimself Beautiful!

I love playing with astrophotography mode on the phone.

My husband and I went for a full moon hike a couple weeks ago, and I ended up getting some good photos along the way. With the full moon, you don't get the countless, countless stars showing up, but as a trade-off, constellations end up being more distinct.
