#introduction Hi! You may already know me from @chrisale. I’ve just created my own Mastodon server at home and I’m trying it out.

It would be really cool if you boosted this so much that my old 2009 iMac melted… but even if all you do is Favourite this little intro and move on I’d be forever grateful.

I am a computer nerd, but also a socialist. A Mac geek, but also an anti-racist. A social media addict, but…. Only on Mastodon of course!

@chris @chrisale Hi Chris, I hope you are keeping everything under control. Given your admission ('computer nerd') I feel compelled to add mine - computer illiterate (almost). Like some other people I know , I still have some technical issues and no idea how to fix/change things. Is there any resoure that one can access to learn more that does not require high level programming/CLI etc? DM OK. Thanks in advance.

I'm testing out a new ActivityPub relay server that's designed for smaller instances like yours; it lets you subscribe to only a filtered subset of posts from other instances on the relay (e.g. by hashtag). If you're interested, let me know and I'm happy to allowlist your instance!

@chris @chrisale Sounds good! I just added you to the allowlist; you can add the relay to Mastodon at https://YOURDOMAIN/admin/relays - and make sure to use the correct relay address or you'll silently never receive posts without any error message 😬

@chris @chrisale Cheers, I'm also experimenting with own servers, mine is on an old #raspberrypi 3, which has been doing fine for about 2 months now, though I don't have many followers which helps for stability probably ;)

and since yesterday another, @willem on a #rasberrypi zero w 2, actually running #gotosocial because it requires very little resources. That one also so far so good :)

These projects are super cool. Been considering my own RaspberryPi server (if I can get my hands on a second device). Any suggestions for good docs/tutorials on setting one up? Bonus points for *thorough* documentation, since I lack a technical/coding background.

@chris @chrisale #selfhosting is a hashtag that is used by folks who are doing their own servers ... and welcome. (I'm a Mac geek got about 12 around the house, but my setup is on a Linux Ubuntu cloud) (12 is not a typo, I have a lot of old Macbooks repurposed with Linux for various things)

@jimcarroll @chrisale oh and I forgot to say 12 old macs around the house is an impressive number. I think I’m done to only about 3 now, plus my old Atari 1040STe that I pulled out of its bin every once in awhile just to see if it still turns on. :)
