Boo, doesn't look like #homeassistant works with #sonoff. Certainly can't see how to add sonoff devices as a new integration. Any ideas, anyone?

@jomo I'm using plenty of sonoff devices with #zigbee2mqtt and #homeassistant.

Yu will need either zigbee2mqtt or #ZHA to connect with the devices.

@nickmcg @jomo any reason why you've gone for zigbee2mqtt over ZHA?

I've thought about switching but not sure I can face having to repair everything.

@ccnethercott @jomo Historic reasons - I first started out using #nodered with #tasmota devices, then extended that to use #zigbee sensors, so I went the #zigbee2mqtt route.

I then decided that the front-end on nodered wasn't what I needed, so I switched (mostly) to #homeassistant.

I now have one RPi4 running #haos, and another running ancilliaries such as zigbee2mqtt, #mosquitto, nodered, #tasmoadmin in docker containers.

@nickmcg any reason not to run all that stuff on a single pi4? I have been doing that for four years without any issues caused by lack of speed or memory

@stooovie I did start with a docker #homeassistant installation and then found that HACS and Supervisor could make things easier for me (IIRC) and, as I had a spare RPi4 and SSD to hand, I installed #HAOS.

I'm sure that if I wasn't a lazy bugger, I could have worked round it but ... 😂

As it is, I like the separation especially as I have a habit of tinkering with working systems and breaking them.

@nickmcg @stooovie if it was more than just than me in my household. I’d like to setup a primary and replica system so I can play around with Home Assistant and not worry if anything breaks because my lights will still turn on.

Currently it feels a bit like playing with the mains supply…

@ccnethercott @nickmcg @stooovie I actually did have a two system setup for a little while…. It’s a nightmare. Having to swap my Zigbee dongle back and forth and juggling.. Don’t do it.
@ccnethercott @nickmcg @stooovie My current #homeassistant “messing about” is done on the evening or when the Mrs is out. I have automated backup to my NAS setup with daily backups. If the system is still “mid project” I just run a manual backup and then restore to my last NAS backup before the Mrs gets home.
It’s the geek equivalent of watching porn on the big TV then hiding it before she get home. 😳

@SMLP @ccnethercott @stooovie ah, yes, backups, that is my weak point.

Or one of them. 😂

@nickmcg @SMLP @ccnethercott surely you know about the Google Drive automatic backup addon for HA
Add-on: Home Assistant Google Drive Backup

Home Assistant Google Drive Backup About I’ve authored an add-on to serve as a complete solution for creating backups in Home Assistant and synchronizing them in Google Drive. In particular it: Automatically creates new backups on a configurable schedule. Uploads any backups it finds to Google Drive. Automatically cleans up old backups in Home Assistant and Google Drive. Integrates with Home Assistant Notifications, and provides sensors you can trigger off of if something goes wrong. Pro...

Home Assistant Community
@stooovie @SMLP @ccnethercott yes, using that. But ... It's the other stuff ...

@ccnethercott @nickmcg @stooovie tell me about… only just got my head around using the Template Card in Mushroom.

I think to main reason people love talking about great add-on in the #homeassistant community is not because they are actually great is just if you have managed to get it working it’s like getting to the top of a mountain so you just want to tell everybody about it.

@SMLP @ccnethercott @stooovie and CORPORATE GREED 🤣. Bezos needs more yachts.

@SMLP @nickmcg @stooovie I do believe that #homeassistant has tried really hard and successfully lowered its barrier of entry. No means is it perfect; there are often multiple sub menus to try and find what you are looking for and the documentation isn't great.

Trying to do anything with the software is incredibly recursive, okay I want to install software that is only available over hacs 1. enable advanced 2. install ssh 3. ssh in 4. configure hacs

I don't like their menus and use the cli.

@ccnethercott @SMLP @stooovie I think that's why I went to HAOS - fortunately, at the time, I had an available RPi4.
