#Democrats respond to GOP calls for #DebtCeiling negotiations: No

“In exchange for not crashing the United States economy, you get nothing,” Sen. Brian Schatz said in an interview with The Daily Beast. “You don’t get a cookie. ... You’re just a person doing the bare minimum of not intentionally screwing over your constituents for insane reasons.”

Democrats respond to GOP calls for debt ceiling negotiations: No

“In exchange for not crashing the United States economy, you get nothing,” one Democratic senator said. “You don’t get a cookie."

MSNBC

2/ Benen ends his post with this:

"Not to put too fine a point on this, but it’s not just that the president won’t engage in talks with Republican hostage takers, it’s that he can’t: To negotiate with those threatening Americans is to encourage others to threaten Americans."

@GottaLaff exactly…the 14th Amendment in the constitution is clear. Past debt stands on its own.

@GottaLaff

I'm fearful that Republicans actually want to destroy the government so this won't be an effective threat, but the only way to get rid of them will be for people to see the damage they want to wreak. Unfortunately, many people ascribe to an alternate media space where Republicans are sent by god to fix the mess caused by wokeness. I think they will be crusading for deeper cuts and more personal sacrifices to show that they are the most pious.

@RnDanger There's no "think" or supposition about it. They're doing this already, have been, and will continue to. Sigh. I have all those fears too.
@GottaLaff Hang tough, Democrats. Do not negotiate with terrorists -- including those who now control the House.
@GottaLaff We will see. The Dems made a big deal about holding people accountable and then ceded the insurrection investigation to Cheney, who was only interested in Trump. They put off doing anything about the insurrectionists in Congress until just before they were out of power. Referrals to the “ethics committee (rather than DOJ) are totally meaningless when those now running it have no ethics. I will hope they stand their ground this time while not holding my breath.
@JenX I give them a tiny bit more credit than all of that, but you make good points. Esp. about the ethics committee. That's a waste.
@JenX
The J6 committee had the ability to arrest people for not showing. They failed the test.
@GatekeepKen I don’t know about arresting them, but they could have referred them. (Not that it would have made any difference with this DOJ.)
@JenX
Time is wasting isn't it. Referrals are a joke.

@GottaLaff Simple solutions:
1. Abolish debt ceiling. It's a unnecessary relic.
2. Make debt ceiling automatically always equal to national debt plus or minus the annual deficit. It's ts own ceiling. No further congressional action needed.

Congress sets and controls appropriations. Executive branch spends appropriations. Since Treasury Department oversees national debt, and oversees government revenue and expenditures, Treasury can report new national debt and debt ceiling.

@wsrphoto Yep but that won't happen
@GottaLaff - Sen. Schatz is not involved in this. He’s a Senator. This will be dealt with in the House. What I don’t see (and I hope that’s because it’s happening behind the scenes in the House) is an acknowledgment that there are easily seven or eight Republican Members who can be convinced not to crash the economy. They are from districts that went for Biden in 2020. Sen. Schatz accomplishes nothing by being antagonistic towards people he’s not even negotiating with.
@rlpaulprodn I disagree. Of course he's not involved directly as a Senator, but messaging is part of any strategy. The louder the Dems are, and not just in govt, but everywhere, in the media, locally, everywhere, the more pressure is put on GOP. I, too, hope there are enough GOP votes in the House, because if not, the global economy will suffer, not just the US.
@GottaLaff: If this was seen as helpful by the Democratic Leadership in the House, you would see Cong. Jeffries talking about it in these terms. At this point even Cong. Talib and Cong. O-C aren’t talking this way. That means Cong. Jeffries doesn’t see it as productive.
@rlpaulprodn That doesn't mean it isn't. I'm glad Schatz is saying what so many of us are thinking.
@GottaLaff This is all about cutting Social Security and Medicare. I’m extremely worried that Democrats will allow cuts to take place. In the past Biden has vocally supported cutting them… Democrats will probably allow these programs to be cut under the guise of “having no choice”…
@galad That's my fear too. Has been for years.

@GottaLaff

Hey gop, as politely as we are able on your offer.

Get self propagated and eat it twice.

@GottaLaff "the GOP is prepared to harm Americans on purpose unless their demands are met. For all intents and purposes, it is a Republican extortion scheme."
@GottaLaff It looks like we're going to the mattresses.
@GottaLaff @jeffjarvis Whoa. Democrats with intestinal fortitude! I suppose there’s hope.

@GottaLaff

I certainly like that answer… NO!

@GottaLaff You would think that the self-described "party of no" would understand a simple "no." But "Nooooooo!!!"
@GottaLaff Amen! No negotiations with Republican economic terrorists.

@GottaLaff We can no longer submit to them.

I'm going to be reaaallly blunt with this but we need to let this happen. The GOP will expose the blame that they themselves did this and do some serious damage to their party.

We just simply can't let them get away with these bribes any more.

@GottaLaff

@GOP fools will waste the next 2yrs
"Tales told by idiots full of sound and fury, signifying nothing"
No matter what they pass it dies in Senate &/or vetoed @POTUS
Even threats about debt limit are impotent
Sec. 4 of the 14th Am. prohibits any defaults of Treasury's obligations

@SueInRockville I wouldn't say they're impotent though. They can cause the world economy to suffer just by creating the chaos they're currently creating.
@GottaLaff
Only to a point. Both the Senate & Biden will crush them. Butit is a battle between DOJ getting off it’s damn ass & indicting these MFers
Well, I understand the complexity in breath of the January 6 insurrection, I will never forgive them for taking so long, but they allowed these bastards back into controlofthe House!
@GottaLaff agree. We cannot allow them to destroy our democracy.
