The headline is misleading (not nationalization of LLMs). The suggestion is good: "It is time to build public, open-access LLMs for the humanities."

Trump is killing the NGS. It's resp for maintaining & updating what’s known as the Nat Spatial Ref System, includes measurements of depth & height as well as calculations around Earth’s gravitational field—crucial mathematics that inform much of the basic infrastructure around us, from constructing bridges to mapping out water & electric lines...

Trump doesn't understand their role, & regardless, doesn't care bc he can't profiteer, so he's defunding the NGS.

Trump Cuts Are Killing a Tiny Office That Keeps Measurements of the World Accurate

A tiny but crucial agency that maintains physical coordinates like latitude and longitude in the US is struggling as the Trump administration forces out federal employees.

Now many billions will Trump, his family, and his partners collect on his official trip to the Middle East next week?

How many journalism organizations will try to aggregate the spoils of Trump world corruption so the public will fully understand the breadth and depth of the sleaze?

I can't begin to guess the answer to the first question, but the second one is easy: zero.

So much of the destruction in the USA is away from the spotlight at grass roots level. But the foundations of a modern society are being smashed. The National Science Foundation has just stopped awarding new grants and funding existing ones. That effectively means that work on all existing NSF grants has to stop immediately. Universities are telling researchers to stop spending on those grants right away. That's jobs and progress and opportunity just being eradicated.

Exclusive: NSF stops awarding new grants and funding existing ones

US science funder also plans to screen grant applications for compliance with ‘agency priorities’.

I just got the official email from the NSF about the drastic cuts and I think the correct translation is "if you are a young researcher who still wants to do science strongly consider leaving the United States if you can." which, really, is not an ideal message to be sending.
Organising these bootcamps was *a lot* of work, but really really rewarding too. The first produced at least 3 published papers (so far)..

If you don’t think this administration is so incompetent or callous as not to do this, you haven’t been paying attention.
The fact that Musk has lost $100B over the last month but is still the wealthiest person on Earth and financially unharmed in the slightest—all while wealth and income inequality is worse now than it was after the Great Depression—is Exhibit A on why we need to tax billionaires out of existence.
Mexican Artist Crushes Tesla Model 3 Under 9-Ton Statue

Mexican sculptor Chavis Mármol dropped a nine-ton replica of an ancient Indigenous Olmec head onto the roof of a Tesla Model 3 in Mexico City as a brilliant commentary on modern society’s obsession with materialism, excess, and capitalism. This is Mármol’s latest art installation in a series where he uses the symbol of the Indigenous Olmec head as a representation of the cultural roots of the land, and of his, as well as all, Indigenous ancestors — ancestors whose way of life was and continues t
