NBC News: "Within hours of being sworn in as the new governor of Arkansas, Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed an executive order Tuesday banning the term "Latinx" from official use in the state government.

It is one of the first, if not the first, executive order of its kind, Tabitha Bonilla, an associate professor of human development and social policy at Northwestern University, told NBC News."

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders bans term 'Latinx' on her first day in office

Within hours of being sworn in as the new Republican governor of Arkansas on Tuesday, Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed an executive order banning the term Latinx.

NBC News
@joshsternberg Not a big fan of free speech, apparently. I personally don't use the term, but I don't let it bother me if other people do.
@joshsternberg she will be sued?
Banning language. Hmm 🤔 sounds familiar.
#OrwellWasRight
@joshsternberg It's so weird. Republicans just can't help but be bigots.
@joshsternberg The whole Huckabee family are disgusting.
@joshsternberg it’s stupid to ban a word, however.. I am pro immigrant rights, speak Spanish, tutor in the Latino community and help with ppl getting citizenship . I find The use of the word Latinx arrogant and culturally pretty damn insensitive. I live in a rural community with many agricultural workers one of my friends said to me when I mentioned the word. “I am not x Latin, I am Latina.”
@rebeccabguinn @joshsternberg yeah, this action seems like doing "kind of the right thing" for "almost definitely the wrong reason."

@rebeccabguinn @joshsternberg
I've never really been a big fan of the word "Latinx" either.

However, being full blooded Mexican, I can see why some very staunch, patriarchally-marinated agricultural workers would insist they are LatinA or LatinO.

I am neither. I refer to myself as Latine. If that is arrogant... well, I guess I'm guilty as charged and will march toward progress doing so.

@aBirdieOnaWire @joshsternberg sorry that you feel that way about agricultural workers. It makes me sad.

@rebeccabguinn
Well, I didn't say it was a bad thing. It just is what it is.

I own a business that has about 125 clients where 98% are 1st generation or crossed-over-illegally business owners.

I've been at it for nearly 17yrs and know each of them and about 75% of their employees, who are also 1st gen or crossed-over-illegally persons.

@rebeccabguinn
With the exception of *maybe* 5, they all have a VERY distinct way of thinking that obviously comes from being steeped in the patriarchy.

If you're sad about it, perhaps you could start pushing language change. Perhaps think about how language and culture can be changed.

@joshsternberg

@aBirdieOnaWire @joshsternberg I’m not trying to change the culture, I’m trying to help thier families and themselves have oportunidad, citizenship, lack of fear from the knock on the door that may get one of thier family members deported. I ask them what they need and how they want to get there. I let them laugh at my mistakes with my Spanish, because they have been embarrassed by their mistakes in English. It am not going to preach on how they should aclimate.
@aBirdieOnaWire @joshsternberg I care because I lived in Peru, I saw children with distended bellies, protein decency, eyes of 6 year olds that looked 80 I know why they come, and words like Latinx seem petty and immaterial.

@rebeccabguinn
That...
is unfortunate. It really is.

I can tell you from having the trust of so many of my clients and the first hand knowledge myself of having acclimated, that doing so facilitates making it in this country when you're an immigrant.

It sounds like your someone who has the potential for a tremendous amount of influence withing that community and with your guidance could affect tremendous, positive change.

Now I'm the one who is saddened.

@joshsternberg

@rebeccabguinn @joshsternberg I have friends who have told me the same
@rebeccabguinn @joshsternberg I've also heard that *most* native Spanish speakers find it irritating and patronizing/offensive as well. But... any governor "banning" it is performative nonsense.
@joshsternberg #Republicans boldly taking on America's most pressing issues
@joshsternberg we laugh but this vaults Huckabee Sanders to #3 of the top governors of red states of America. What’ve you got, Kristi Noem and Kevin Stitt?

@joshsternberg

Her rationale is bullshit. Only a small percentage use the term, ergo it’s not enough people to matter? They don’t hold this belief when it comes to reproductive rights and school prayer. She’s just a rotten weasel.

@joshsternberg
It's interesting cause the NBC link contains latino in the url.

At the same time, this is kind of welcome, most latino (myself included) do not like the word Latinx. I think I read somewhere that the people most likely to use latinx are college educated whites. So latinos get upset that people who are not latino are trying to change what they are called.

@joshsternberg The first things the House GOP did was to get rid of metal detectors and allow indoor smoking for House members at the Capitol.

Now reading that Republican Arkansas governor Huckabee fittest act was to ban the state government use of the term "LatinX" makes you wonder what are Republican priorities.

They push an agenda without substance, significance, or impact in improving the lives of everyday Americans.

Why squander the opportunity to solve real problems?

@BlueBeachSong @joshsternberg they can’t solve the real problems because the problem is themselves.
@joshsternberg There is an easy workaround. The word Latine is a better word. See https://theconversation.com/stop-using-latinx-if-you-really-want-to-be-inclusive-189358
Stop using ‘Latinx’ if you really want to be inclusive

Some Spanish-speaking activists are already using a different gender-inclusive term, arguing it’s a better replacement for Latinx.

The Conversation
@joshsternberg so nothing about INFLATION!!!! And gas prices? 😂
@joshsternberg
De-gendering a romance language is silly, but public policy forbidding it is pathetic authoritarian garbage.
@joshsternberg this from the article brought it home for me - "It is something that seems to be tied to things that they object to, which is really anything that prioritizes marginalized people and marginalized points of view,"
@joshsternberg I've heard that some Spanish speakers prefer "Latine" and other "-e" endings to make words more gender-neutral anyway
@joshsternberg Well that’s certainly a real important problem she solved
@joshsternberg why do they keep trying to rebrand FASCISM as ‘anti-woke?’
Call it what it is!
The new(old) racist, misogynist, queerist, disableist, classist, anti workerist pro inbred privileged billionaire supporting agenda.
