@gamingonlinux you've just got to block "people" like that right out of the gate.
This is the way. Block early, block often.
@IamSweetT not only is it a reasonable reaction, it's the only reasonable reaction.
Normalize "we reserve the right to refuse (service platform etc) to anyone."
@CodexNotFound @gamingonlinux @thelinuxEXP Being open to interpretation doesn't make it clickbait otherwise all titles are clickbait making the entire term completely useless. Personal interpretation has nothing to do with it being clickbait or not.
It has to be lacking key context, outright false or a bad faith label to be clickbait. Malicious or severely negligent. "BIG update to Proton coming" is sufficient given the video content.
@neilochgaming @gamingonlinux @thelinuxEXP I guess that's a different interpretation of clickbait then.
For me, intent doesn't matter much, since you can't know intent. Making it impossible to use the term unless they admit it themselves.
If I have a video called "visit to an amusement park" showing a visit to a petting zoo. Would that be clickbait? You can't know my intent for that video title, it's technically correct, but not what people expect.
@CodexNotFound @gamingonlinux @thelinuxEXP If you can't tell when someone is trying to write clickbait even when given the context of the content I feel like you shouldn't be saying what is or isn't clickbait.
-You WON'T BELIEVE what happened at the park!
-I met a friendly dog at the park today
"Oh no how can we tell the difference in their intention in these titles?"
@neilochgaming @gamingonlinux @thelinuxEXP just looking at the title of the video in question "BIG update to proton coming" it feels like it's a lot closer to the first sample you gave. Especially when you see that it's only a minor update version wise and a regular sized update compared to other version updates. Nothing in the update screams "BIG" to me.
Using my interpretation it wouldn't be clickbait, but using your interpretation it is.
@gamingonlinux @thelinuxEXP Every title is clickbait, sort of. The question is, if it is misleading and have enough information?
But on the other hand, you don't have to agree on his opinion that its clickbait too! What I don't agree here is, how he lays it out, making it a bigger problem that it is and coming of so negatively. As comments like him tend to be inflammatory.
But I can kind of understand both sides of you.
@gamingonlinux @thelinuxEXP I am honest here and guilty as well, as I threw the term "clickbait" too. But after confrontation with the YouTube channel owners in the comment to talk about the issue, I started to think more about it and found out it was wrong.
But I can fully understand why you are fed up with this.
So I am not here to tell how you should handle such a situation, but think of people reading it who are not on a fight. And to be fair, you did well in the screenshot. At least to me
@gamingonlinux @thingsiplay @thelinuxEXP
Tbh IMO click bait does not have to be misleading. It is just intentionally using a title that attracts clicks.
The only time clickbait is a problem, is when it is misleading.
People calling out a video for being clickbait are starting a meaningless argument.
I wouldn't call this clickbait:
Young adult white american male explaining how the desktop OS known as GNU/Linux came to have many distributions and why it is not that big of a deal
(1/2)
@gamingonlinux @thingsiplay @thelinuxEXP
This I would consider click bait
Linux Fragmentation isn't a problem! Here's Why!
If the video does exactly that then it isn't misleading.
I'm specifically targeting you with this, these are just generic titles for a common video that's made. But my point is, ofc it's clickbait. It has to be due to the #YouTube #algorithm. But also, its often shorter
People calling clickbait are just adding engagement to your video.

@gamingonlinux @thingsiplay @thelinuxEXP
Thats fair.
I love that we’ve reached an era of online debate where whether or not the qualifier “big” applies to a software update can be a contentious issue. #thefutureisnow #itwassupposedtobeflyingcars
@ticho @tkdefender @gamingonlinux I have a very liberal muting policy on my channel. Someone says something completely untrue, idiotic, offensive or the like? « hide user from the channel ». Boom, now I never have to see their comments again!
Life is too short to be annoyed!
@gamingonlinux @thelinuxEXP to be fair, click bait is personal. If my interpretation of a title is one thing but the video is something else than that can be seen as clickbait, even though it was never intended as clickbait.
I have not seen this video yet, but I'd say from the version numbering it's a Major update, where big refers to a large amount of changes or impactful changes.
That said, I dont think one should comment about clickbait because it's personal
