security at every level of the airport is insane. until baggage claim. then they’re like here take whatever bag you want.

@missy_lynn Airports define security theater.

I remember long before 9/11 when the most stringent security was at baggage claim.

I regularly had to present my claim ticket for each bag before being allowed to exit the guarded and gated area in the 70's into the 80's (probably required in the 60's, too, but I was a kid).

@missy_lynn Every other step is their money loss. Baggage claim on the other hand...
@MichalBryxi how DARE you insinuate they only care about their bottom line
@missy_lynn oh that was supposed to be secret? Oops ...
@MichalBryxi sir my whole worldview is shattered … one does not just say “oops”
@missy_lynn I've been to a few airports where they just throw your bags on the ground and tell you to sort it out
@gwmccull same…those smaller planes just chuck your stuff on the tarmac lol
@gwmccull @missy_lynn damn you must have came through Birmingham 🙃
@missy_lynn yeah, the security they want is for them, not for us lol
@missy_lynn
They don't care about our security, only theirs
@missy_lynn
So much for the sanctity of private property. Or is it the tragedy of the commons...?
@missy_lynn I miss being able to go to the gate to see people off.
@missy_lynn I’m old enough to remember when they actually checked the baggage claim ticket they gave you as you were leaving the area. Don’t recall when that stopped but it was long ago.
@iragsdale @missy_lynn Yeah, I was going to say, I distinctly remember people at the airport actually caring about that when I was a kid. Back when you could hang out with people at their gate while they were waiting to board.
@missy_lynn
I've often wondered about that.
Seems remarkably simple.
If by chance you're challenged by the real owner you just say, oops, my mistake.
I suppose you have to ask who would want a load of dirty underwear...but we know there are people out there who positively do.
That's another can of worms isn't it?
@missy_lynn this just shows that they are not concerned about your security. When ever you see corporate security, they are not there to protect you.
@missy_lynn Hey now... There's a voice on the loudspeaker that reminds you that many bags look alike and you should make sure you've got your own bag.
@missy_lynn Just get it off the airport property before it explodes, eh?
@missy_lynn It’s the same as the bar. There is a cover, you’re going to get carded, you might get searched, plenty of booze, you don’t have to go home with who you brought but you definitely can’t stay here.
@missy_lynn I just saw someone’s shopping bag left unattended on the tram. I left it there unattended. Wish me luck 🤞
@missy_lynn especially given outside most of Europe domestic baggage claim isn't even in a secure area, so it really is just "take it" 🤨
@missy_lynn yeah, and usually the baggage claim is even in a place that's open to the general public! Like right now if you want a random surprise grab bag of stolen stuff, you could just walk right into an airport baggage claim even if you weren't on any of the flights! "Oh I'm here to meet my friend who's visiting! Yeah this looks like his bag!"
@missy_lynn I figure it’s security through lottery-style odds. For every one checked bag with diamonds or a poorly-secured laptop full of juicy secrets, there are 100,000 where all you’re stealing is someone’s dirty underwear and very-used hair straightener, both of which have leaked shampoo on them.

@missy_lynn “Report unattended bags to security”

Meanwhile …

@missy_lynn It's security for THEM, not for you.
@missy_lynn Yeah. The threat to the aircraft is literally over at that point.
@missy_lynn Last time I flew was pre-COVID and the baggage check at LAX had someone checking claim checks with the tags on the luggage. I don't know if they're doing that now, especially after seen baggage claim areas filled with unclaimed or lost bags.
