We intentionally left out the option to revert back to the previous hidden action buttons in the timeline so we could get a sense of what you thought. Preference seems pretty evenly split so we will be adding back the previous way to access post actions as an option in the next build. Thanks for all the feedback! 🙂
@ivory OMG, I thought this was going to be an alpha slot. Nearly had a heart attack.
@ivory I think I like the new version better but I see the need for the option
@rlegg @ivory Agreed. Having the options in the timeline is my preference but I could understand how others would disagree.
@ivory THANK YOU! I hadn’t gotten around to tooting at you yet but I would sorely miss the little hidden action drawer.

@raygan @ivory what is the hidden action drawer?? Have I not been using a feature in tweetbot?

Do you mind explaining?

@whatthecj @ivory this thing that slides out when you tap a toot/tweet. The latest Ivory beta replaced it with a persistent set of icons on each toot.
@raygan @ivory same! I get folks who want it visible but I miss the drawer dearly
@ivory one fewer tap. I like.
@ivory I’m so confused, what hidden action buttons?
@ryangoodlett When you tap on a post to reveal the reply, fave, boost, etc. Current build has them inline with the post.
@ivory oh, I guess I didn’t notice anything different.
@ivory I like both options tbh. The one thing that seems a bit off is that, with the action bar in-line, I find myself intuitively tapping on the body of the post and expecting it to navigate to the post (i.e. same as a full right-to-left swipe)
@DataDrivenMD @ivory What I find really unintuitive is that the hidden buttons appear on a tap in the timeline but not when you’re looking at a specific conversation. It’s very jarring.
@petersterne @ivory I *believe* that's a function of the Mastodon API. Kind of the same deal when you try to like or boost a post that isn't lnown to your instance— and a modal pops up asking you to log in
@ivory I’m for always visible, but customization is an excellent way forward :3
@ivory thanks. My opinion on the older way completely reversed in the past two weeks. I’m now not sure which one I’ll end up settling on, so options are appreciated.
@ivory Do you mean the “tap on a post to open/hide the icons drawer” thing? I’d love to have that back, thanks. :)
@cooner @ivory and can you include an Edit button in that icon drawer too? plz, thnx
@ivory fingers crossed I can get in!
@ivory thanks for bringing the preference back as an option.
@ivory is your profile picture going to be added as an icon?
@ivory it’s fine but it feels like how every other app does it. The expansion is like how I’d expect Tweetbot/Ivory to work.
@vmstan @ivory I completely agree; as a new tester, having them always visible feels cluttered and very un-Tapbots.
@lukesweeney @vmstan as much as there are people who love the drawer, there are probably equally as many who prefer inline actions. So the best option for us is to offer both. 🙂
@ivory @vmstan agreed. I support your aversion to settings, but it seems like the solution in this case.
@lukesweeney @ivory the smaller icon set has sort of grown on me.

@vmstan @ivory interesting. That’s what I have at the moment, so we’ll see if it has the same effect.

With that setting, it feels off to me that when you tap to view an individual post, it has bigger icons than all the others…

I like how @ posts are differentiated with background colour in ones timeline, that might be a better way in the thread view too 🤔

@ivory @vmstan I love the update. No drawer or inline actions for me. Is that how it was way back when?
@lukesweeney @vmstan we’ve had the drawer system since the very first version of Tweetbot over 10 years ago.
@ivory @vmstan nice. I’d love to see a screenshot of 1.0 and how much has changed (or not)!
@ivory Thanks! I definitely like the clean look of having them hidden but was going to try "living with it" for a little while. This is the only tweak so far that has felt like a step back!
@ivory 🥳 Thanks! Definitely glad to hear that.
@ivory could you give us an option to turn off the dramatic falling animation when we swipe close an image? Its so wonky
@max Eventually. That animation is like 10 years old. 🙃
@ivory cool thanks... The way it tumbles feels like it gives me micro vertigo
@ivory Y'all have made an app I really enjoy so far, looking forward to the finished version.
@ivory I’m a fan of the persistent action buttons. Makes Ivory faster to use.
@ivory it would be great if it were possible to have the buttons reduce size as you reduce the text size in the app just to have them use less space if you want to have more content in the feed
@ivory I really like the one tap to view comments, personally, and love the inline counts. I’m glad you’re making it a preference. I _think_ the current view might be the better default, as it aligns with other Mastodon clients?

@ivory I think I’d return to them being hidden by default personally.

It feels like the action buttons plus the retweet / private mention badges eat into the amount of posts that are visible

@ivory FWIW I’m a huge fan of the exposed action buttons!
@ivory It also helps to separate the different posts a bit more, which I also appreciate.

@ivory We are opinionated users but appreciate you all considering our feedback! 💜

For mentions in the notifications tab, maybe you could implement the same swipe gesture to open post details? I’m so used to the Tapbots way being tap for actions, swipe for details.

@ivory Love the hidden action buttons.
@ivory absolutely prefer the always visible bar myself
@ivory oh good, I hoped there would be a way to hide it again! it’s oddly weird to try and retrain my finger brain to go from tap then star, to just star! 🤣 having the number next to the stars and boosts etc is great.

@ivory the buttons feel oversized in the timeline to me compared to other apps.

Might be the color is to prominent or the line weight is too heavy: but I think they stick out too much ATM

@actsukrit the color is pretty subdued. Are you running the latest version? 🙃 if so, there’s also an option for smaller icons in the settings.

@ivory I didn’t see the option there! Yeah, this size is much less intrusive for me

Thanks for the response!

@actsukrit Also the color of them is tied to the lightest text color of the theme. So if the icons are very bold in contrast, it might be because you have "high contrast" mode enabled. 🙂
@ivory @actsukrit any plans on reflecting the individual icon size also in detail view?
