For #ThickTrunkTuesday, I'm posting a photo of moss-laden old growth trees that I took Sept. 2, 2022, at South Beach State Park, Oregon. We camped there with our 1986 Westfalia #Vanagon, in the campground south of the #Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport.

It's been bugging me that I couldn't name the trees in the photo I'd uploaded. I checked the maps of the area where we walked when I took this photo, and by using the names of the trails - Old South Jetty trail, South Beach State Park, (nearby) Siuslaw National Forest, #Oregon - finally found more info on the trees. I initially thought this might be an old growth Sitka Spruce, but @fvehafric suggests lodgepole pine (see his response below).

Decided since I refer to the above image as being taken while we were #Camping on the #Oregon #Coast, I’d add a photo of our campsite at South Beach State Park, Newport – sunrise Sept. 2, 2022. Our Westfalia Vanagon is dwarfed by the tall pine #trees. The moisture in the air from being near the beach, has saturated the colours in the trees while diluting the emerging sunlight in the white-blue cloudless sky. #KCM

(Edited to re-post the image with new #AltText with more senses described.)

@kathrynmathias I can't tell from the photo, but a lot of the gnarled and wind flagged trees on the Oregon coast are lodgepole pine, which adopts an entirely different growth habit on the coast compared to further inland.
@fvehafric thanks for responding. I'll edit my post to include your suggestion.
@fvehafric now that I have a name for the trees, that I can use to search for more information online, I've discovered this reference (see link), and looking at the image the site includes, reinforces (for me) the idea this is the correct tree. https://oregonforests.org/content/tree-variety
@kathrynmathias like that. Very cool
@RC Thanks! It was a beautiful walk from the campground to the beach, via this trail.
@kathrynmathias Beautiful
@Grant_M We really enjoyed the trail to the dunes and the beach. This vegetation lined the trail on both sides.
@kathrynmathias Oregon is so nice. I used to make trips down there with my pals back when I lived in Vancouver in my early 20s :)
@Grant_M We did that regularly when younger and living in Surrey, BC - just above
Crescent Beach near Ocean Park. It was a quick trip down the coast. Still not too much driving (though of course more) from Calgary where we now live. We cross at Kingsgate and stop along the Columbia River the first night if it's getting dark, enroute to the coast.
@kathrynmathias That's cool! I'd certainly like to do it again someday :)
@Grant_M It IS cool. True confessions, I do get nervous when we're driving along the Columbia River if a high wind arises while on the steeper part of the route. Our Westfalia Vanagon is a high narrow box, not fun in high winds.
