Using the same meditation technique day in and day out is like driving to the airport, but refusing to get out of the car. Yes, the car got you to the airport, but you’ll need to leave it behind if you ever wish to make your overseas destination.

As straightforward as this logic is, there are still many people using the same static meditation technique every day.

I have a regular practice, japa (constant mantra repetition all day long), but sometimes I need to switch gears. If I find a lot of mental chatter despite the japa I might add some eyes-closed breath-watching to empty the mind. Some vigorous exercise or bhastrika (bellows breathing) b4 also helps.

When japa became stale chewing gum, it had lost its purpose. The mantra had become meaningless. Began identifying w mantra as my very own name, this refocused Attention.

Sally Kempton’s wonderful audiobook Doorways to the Infinite explores several types of meditation, and reasons for using each.

If already ruminating and eyes-closed meditation isn’t working, try something opposite: moving not sitting, or breathwork not words, or moving + eyes open = japa while washing dishes, or channeling Reiki. Or ecstatic dance, compassion med, Guru Bhav, Kundalini raising, so many.

Gazing meditation is my fave, but need a partner.
