If humans could fly, I think some of us would. But it probably takes the same amount of energy as running. So realistically, I think most of us would end up like pigeons & loiter outside of convenience stores instead of flying across the country.
@roxiqt I wonder that for telekinesis - I'm always wishing I could fetch things with the power of my mind, but what if it took exactly the same amount of energy as just...walking over there?
@meeses @roxiqt I can move buses, trains, trams and taxis with just the power of my mind.
All I have to do is try to board one of those conveyances and they move away before I can get close enough.
@peemee Reverse psychology never works, but maybe just this once?
@roxiqt well the great thing about flying is that once you get to speed, you can glide. Can't do that on foot unless skates are involved.
@Arlnee @roxiqt If I had clear, flat, paths with no fear of getting hit by bikes or cars I might learn to skate. I'd still look a tool in lycra, so: meh?
@roxiqt it’d only take about a month for someone to develop a flying aid machine of some sort like those sidewalk e-scooters everywhere and then there’d be group versions and then the next thing you know we’d be back to planes
@roxiqt If humans could fly it might be like pigeons yes, crapping all over the place and loitering about, and then there would be some like sparrow cliques that spend hours nattering about various things, maybe lift-to-drag ratios or social tiffs and rarely bothering flying beyond a short range
@roxiqt I wonder if the modifications to make us able to fly wouldn't also make it more likely for us to do so. You're going to have to amp up The metabolism and significantly decrease the body weight of a human to make it fly and support. Sentience. And it might be that we'd be more active if our bodies were always in high activity mode
@roxiqt I occasionally have dreams where I can fly, and they are the happiest dreams I ever have. I would definitely fly if I could, even if I just needed to get something from the kitchen. 🥰
@roxiqt The only way humans will be able to fly is to lose at least half of our bone mass, and most of our other body weight. If I were writing this story, I would find a way to turn osteoporosis into an asset, and have human wings develop along with it, so we'd have a bunch of septuagenarians flying between Florida and Arizona, with no one else able to fly any better than a turkey.
@roxiqt our future selves
@roxiqt Run at the top of your lungs to high enough that there's updrafts, if the weather is nice. So sprints, not endurance.
@roxiqt I have long theorized that flying is unpleasant and only done by birds when there is no other option. Why else do they walk/hop around when they could just fly?
@roxiqt If humans could live in the ocean, like whales, a surprisingly large number of them would be found beached every single day...
@roxiqt or fall down chimneys
@roxiqt or biking. Theoretically I could bike to work. But I drive cause I’m too lazy. BTW, I own an e-assist bike. Yeah, most of us would be pigeons.

@roxiqt

I've wondered about humans having the capacity to fly on their own volition, but never thought of the energy likely involved. Good (and funny!) observation. 😀

@roxiqt you’d still catch me in an airplane because I’m too lazy ☠️
@roxiqt I think it would be worth the effort so we could dive bomb politicians like massive pigeons...😀
@IndyRichard @roxiqt yes, what fun. I don’t want to have bleach white bowel movements though, so
@roxiqt that’s rather optimistic. My guess is we’ll act more like penguins. We’ll flop on our stomachs and push ourselves around with our feet. 😀
@roxiqt I grew up watching The Flying Nun and wanted it to be true

@roxiqt

Already many are hanging out at MickyDs and Wendys scrounging for fries.

@roxiqt Not me. If we could actually fly, I would want LONG wings and would work on soaring. Distance flight has been a dream for me since I was single-digits years old.
@roxiqt @DataChick Interesting that in dreams and sci-fi, flying is always effortless. Birds and planes need a lot more energy for sure! I guess it's human nature to visualize things in unrealistically ideal ways!
@roxiqt Flying gives you a greater range for feeding.

@roxiqt Long ago I remember times of standing in queues, in pouring rain, day after day waiting for the London No 11 buses to get home after work. Most of those times I dreamed about sprouting huge powerful wings & just soaring away home, while those left behind gaped in awe.

Now I live in Australia and bus queues are not so bad.😉

Scientists Finally Have Evidence That Frigatebirds Sleep While Flying

According to a new study, the birds can stay aloft for weeks by power napping in ten-second bursts.

@roxiqt You are literally the first person to ever point out that if we could fly, most of us are too old and out of shape to do it for long. And now I'm sad.
@roxiqt I've never once considered the energy expenditure needed for a human to fly like Superman. Comics and movies always make it seem effortless, and now you've unlocked a door in my mind behind which my brain is trying to work out the physics — but ultimately, yeah, I think you nailed the overall reality of what would happen if we could fly, because yeah, if it's like running, I am happy as a pigeon.
@roxiqt I just did flying vs. invisibility as a discussion topic in my ESL class, and I thought so much about this! Flying wouldn't be effortless, it would take so much energy. And I for one, don't have it!

@roxiqt

Flying takes a lot more energy, believe me, I have tried. No matter how had I flap, I can’t seem to take off.

@roxiqt shitting on a BMW convertible as you say this

@roxiqt
Haha, I see what you did there!

That's a funny way to think about it.
It's true that humans have been dreaming of flying for centuries, and it would certainly make travel a lot easier if we could just take off and fly wherever we wanted to go.
But as you pointed out, it would probably take a lot of energy to fly, so it's probably a good thing that we can't do it.
Otherwise, we might all end up flapping our arms and hovering outside of convenience stores like pigeons!

@roxiqt True, but I'm afraid you wouldn't have to go as far as flying. Judging by my interactions with humans every day, you could sadly say the very same thing about thinking...
@roxiqt 🤣🤣 I bet you’re right!
@roxiqt Flying would take far, far more energy than running.
@roxiqt @NewtonMark Ridge-soaring or thermalling for me, please.
@roxiqt but if we were born with wings and grew up being able to fly we wouldn’t be out of shape.
@roxiqt don't know - Superman looked pretty chill

@roxiqt You are a total moron:

1. Flying takes much more energy than “running”. Learn some physics.

2. Pigeans are EXCELLENT AND STRONG flyers. They literally fly thousand of km home very fast stopping only briefly for food, water and rest.

Thank you for normalizing shooting off your mouth without having a clue what you are talking about because everyone is totally entitled to have their voice.
