#AskingAutistics

Some positivity to start the year:

What's the best thing about being #ActuallyAutistic? What #Autism has given you? What makes you grateful for being #Autistic? Is it a trait, talent or ability, a special pleasure accessible thanks to autism, or something else?

Please note that toxic posters will be instant-blocked. If you don't have anything good to say about your autism, feel free to say nothing. This is an #AutismPride thread!

@ReimanSaara Embracing my autistic-ness taught me how to fully accept myself.

I thought every part of me was bad because everyone was constantly upset with me and I didn’t know why. The more I learned about autism, the more I realized I’m a normal autistic person.

And there was an entire community full of #Autistic people who all relate to each other. I felt alone my whole life. But there were others out there like me and that was very comforting.

Helped me embrace who I am.

@ashleyspencer These are huge things! I hope that little by little, most if not all, autistic people will eventually find their way into #ActuallyAutistic community and find their happy place there.

I'm resilient against feeling alone in the sense of "not being with other people", but the existential-level loneliness one experiences when there is nobody able to relate around ever, is brutal.

@ReimanSaara I do my best to try and help autistic people find self-acceptance with my business and things I create. Takes time and accepting bits of our autistic selves one day at a time.

I got tired of being told that something was wrong with me. I believed them and internalized all the bad things NTs said to me.

Now if an NT wonders what’s wrong with me, screw them.

It’s funny, because of my business no one dares ask me anymore who diagnosed me or why I don’t look autistic.

@ashleyspencer Your business sounds awesome! I wish it success!

The mission behind my business is to build bridges among autistic and neurotypical people and help the world to understand and like us as we deserve.

Due to my business, I get regularly remarks for "not looking autistic" -mainly from neurotypicals who don't like me challenging their views about autism and them speaking on our behalf, silencing us.

@ReimanSaara Thank you! ❤️

That sounds like a wonderful business and amazing purpose! I’m glad you are able to stand up for our autistic community and teach people what it’s like to be us. I applaud you.

@ashleyspencer @ReimanSaara @actuallyautistic The most important part of our finding each other is understanding our own #diversity and giving each other #space to BE #different and accepted, where the #allistic world demands #conformity and #compliance. We simply can’t do that in all ways at all times, and it drains us to #mask for them. We need #safe, comfortable, #accepting spaces outside that #intolerant world. #actuallyautistic

@ashleyspencer @ReimanSaara Embracing my autism has been very liberating.

I no longer think I'm a freak... I dealt with a lot of anger towards those who ignored and dismissed the signs for decades and accepted who I am... I finally UNDERSTAND who I am and why I am this way.

I'm unapologetic for my 'quirks' and the way I process things and I refuse to beg for scraps of attention and basic human decency and compassion from others.

Accept me for who I am, or get the fuck out of my life.

@ReimanSaara @anomnomnomaly That’s amazing!! So happy to hear you’ve reached that point and know your worth. You definitely deserve to be accepted for who you are. We all do. ❤️
