@jetton Disabled people like me have been screaming ourselves hoarse about the harm done by the Tories/neoliberal austerity since 2010 - backed up by numerous United Nations, BMJ, and countless charities - and been ignored at almost every turn.
I take no pleasure whatsoever in saying "we tried to warn you, but you didn't care".
@jetton
Just blocked all of the ByLines accounts for platforming mainstream hate media transphobic narrative on the Scottish Gender Reform Bill being "controversial".
There were surprisingly quite a lot of them, took me a couple of minutes to send them all to Hades
What is controversial is that so much of the media have aligned themselves with TERFs, presenting the view of a tiny bigoted minority as if it is prevailing.
Fortunately this isn't like other platforms and we don't accept that behaviour in the Fediverse.
@TheMorrigan @jetton
There's no convincing bigots.
I saw their pathetic defense of the choice of words. As we all know, words have power.
If they're going to spout their propaganda we explain why it's wrong should other readers see it, then drop them in a sewer and put the lid back on.
No more clickbait, they're now ignored, the ultimate punishment for journalists.
Hmm, I hadn't seen this. Looks like I shall be unfollowing them.
Thanks for the heads up.
It's possible over the past few months they've learnt a lesson and taken a better tone - but I've not been checking and their response when it was first flagged to them was poor.
This is what happens when so much of your journalist class went to the same schools as each other.
Aside: Reminds me of a mini-rant a follow posted on birdsite some weeks back, pointing out that Neimoller's first-person formulation in that poem was REALLY F*ING INTENTIONAL.
As in, THESE WERE MISTAKES THAT HE, PERSONALLY, MADE. That he was basically telling people 'HEY GUYS I MARTIN NEIMOLLER PERSONALLY F*D THIS UP, DON'T MAKE MY MISTAKES OR MORE PEOPLE WILL GET HURT.'
My friend, first they came for the Jews - and almost every other group never spoke up for Jewish people then, or now. The antisemitism among many groups today is so strong that people in them take quotes about Jews and the Holocaust - and erase the Jews from it. Like right here, right now.
Allyship is only meaningful if we all help each other - not if one group alone is singled out, and allowed to be persecuted. We can choose to be stronger together in love. That is the way.
@jetton
Yes, but the journalists oppose jailing journalists, which makes them exactly as bad and exactly as extreme as the government, so you cannot say that the government is bad for jailing those journalists.
But both sides! But both sides! Let's stop all of this polarization that comes from criticizing only one side!
The above is a parody of past behaviors of journalists.
Yeah, that was kind of the point.
It was in response to a pompous columnist in the NYT who had a column riffing on the Niemöller quote changing it to "First they came for the journalists."
Not sure which columnist since I had cancelled my subscription by then.
That paragraph is a beautiful piece of work.
