@Blackfist

This is the post that blocked on c.im for being *about* racism.

It's a really nice post, relatable. Ironically enough it's about how one can feel left out-- even when those making it happen might not be aware of what they are doing.

This isn't the first time this kind of misguided block has occurred on this server.

Check your friends and let them know, it's just not a place where this is welcome.

(I reached out to the admin, no response.)

#FediBlock #BlackMastodon

@futurebird @Blackfist Completely ridiculous to block this. I would change servers. I would let them know how I feel about it first though.

@futurebird @Blackfist
This post was not "racist", these guys are out of line, that response is BS. According to Spousal Unit (who keeps some track of these things), other ppl have had issues w/them & sure enough their admin acct is whining abt being taken off the official Mastodon site as a suggested server to join. So yeah, block, avoid, move instances.

Thanks for speaking up ❤️

@futurebird @[email protected] For some people, it’s comforting to live in a cocoon where you can pretend all unpleasantries exist elsewhere. Sounds like the ones complaining about so/called identity politics—“if you people would just stop talking about race, we could all get along so much better. You’re the problem. Not us.”

@futurebird @Deglassco @Blackfist

The first rule of White privilege is you do not talk about White privilege.

@HandgunYoga @futurebird @Deglassco @[email protected] You aren’t alive like you’re alive in White Club.

@futurebird @Blackfist

Wow, the admin says talking “about racism” is not acceptable. I recently had a post on c.im removed for saying that ‘immunity debt’ is not a thing. I appealed, still removed, no explanation. I’m planning on moving to Project Mushroom’s instance when I have a moment to figure it out. (Looks fairly straightforward to migrate instances, actually.)

This is going to be an ongoing issue with Mastodon, especially as moneymen start buying instances

@greengordon @futurebird @[email protected] -
Generally, it is viewed as a plus for the Fediverse that there are many instances, and each instance sets their own rules. BUT, this places a large burden on individuals to choose their own instance very carefully. And unfortunately, choosing is made much harder because many instances do arbitrary moderation, rather than moderating strictly in accord with their published rules.

...more...

@greengordon @futurebird @[email protected] -
... I fault c[.]im and other sites less for what they disallow, and more for failing to publish their own detailed rules of what they disallow.

@greengordon @futurebird @Blackfist

Hopefully when the admins on that instance come to their senses I'll unblock the domain.

@greengordon @futurebird @Blackfist see https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/#migration - I can testify it's straightforward, BUT your old posts stay at the old location.

Can I repost this with an image description?

I want to boost, but I'm trying to be better at not boosting things that don't have an image description.

Edit: There were image descriptions. I just missed them because I jump back and forth between different Mastodon client apps and the web app, and confused myself.🤦🏿‍♂️

@futurebird @Blackfist (On another note, great way to address the alt text thing @mekkaokereke! I will be following your example here in the future.)
@mekkaokereke @futurebird @Blackfist it all seems to have descriptions to me. Albeit the op description being a summary of the image.

@futurebird @Blackfist
Gah, my bad!

I just checked in another of my many, many, Mastodon apps, and see image descriptions.

And now I see them in the official app too. My bad! Boosting.

*Sips more coffee* *slaps self in face a few times*

@mekkaokereke when I want to boost an post that's missing alt text, first I write a reply supplying an image description, then I boost the post and my reply. I checked with a blind friend, and this works for him. But of course it is still less than ideal, and I don't know how well it works for anyone else. Here's one of my replies if you'd like to see an example. https://zirk.us/@yingtai/109603360473529249

@mekkaokereke There are image descriptions?
@futurebird Yeah, my bad. I am just very bad at using software. 😖
@mekkaokereke @futurebird possibly not you. I have had them appear and disappear while I was looking at them, and refuse to reappear until, whoops, there they are again. Worst on the official app.
@futurebird @Blackfist thanks for sharing. Things can’t change until we all see. I see nothing wrong with sharing a personal story like this.
@futurebird @Blackfist Well, this is (a) awful and (b) a model example of community guidelines that do lip-service to anti-racism being used to uphold racism.
@futurebird @[email protected] “Talking about racism in public timeline is not good”??? Not good for who??? FFS…
@futurebird @Blackfist Thank you for sharing this. I tried c.im and quickly switched due to functionality problems, but it had looked like a decent place on first glance. It’s completely unacceptable to remove that post!
@futurebird @Blackfist How can they not see that they were perpetuating the very cultural issue you were mentioning?
@futurebird @Blackfist absurd. Sorry you had to deal with that (the trip and the admin behavior) and hope you found a better server.
@futurebird @Blackfist what a disgrace. Removing that post/thread should basically get the moderator removed from that position. Obviously if they run the instance I hope everyone leaves and the site gets defederated.
@futurebird
@Blackfist
I don't feel qualified to talk about racism, but for the life of me, I can't see anything objectionable about that post.
@futurebird @Blackfist @zigged Like everyone else, I’m bewildered as to why this post would blocked. The new rule about posting “personal experience” also seems off to me. I am not sure what to make of the bit about not attacking kind people. Maybe this isn’t the best paraphrase, but I feel like the sentiment is “You’re allowed to say you’ve been a victim of racism as long as you don’t suggest other people are racist.” In other words, racism without racists.
@Judy_Westley @futurebird @Blackfist @zigged White fragility rules...

@megmuttonhead @Judy_Westley Yes, I read it as a way to preemptively shut down "white people [did/do this]" kinds of posts, which negates sharing personal experience *and* systemic issues. The rule has real Hashtag Not All White People energy. The expectation of comfort for white people is a characteristic of #WhiteSupremacyCulture.

CHARACTERISTICS

Sometime in the late 1990s, I arrived home after a particularly frustrating consultation with an organization I was working with at the time. In a flurry of exasperation, I sat down at my computer...

WHITE SUPREMACY CULTURE
@zigged @megmuttonhead Agree. You expressed the sentiment very well. This rule definitely privileges comfort over genuine dialog.
@Judy_Westley I thought “You’re allowed to say you’ve been a victim of racism as long as you don’t suggest other people are racist” was 👌🏻.

@futurebird @Blackfist

There is nothing wrong with that post.

This is the kind of mindset that prompts people to attack history classes under the guise of opposing CRT, which is a grad law school course.

With blatant disregard for black, brown, & other students, these people are so worried about the tender feelings of white kids who somehow take personally atrocities committed by those long dead.

Ironically, you will get nothing but thoughts and prayers re mass shootings at schools.

@Blackfist @futurebird Just in! A photo of the brand new device to keep us (white cishet male USAnian/NorthernEuropean Mastodon users) safe from the perils of racism!

#KrazyKat #cartoon #OstrichStrategy #sarcasm

@futurebird

... oof.  I should not have read this before my morning coffee.

@futurebird @Blackfist “Talking about racism in a public timeline is not good...”
So, obviously, this is the flaw in the federated model; so many of us white people value a sanitized “niceness” in our discourse that we’re going to replicate this kind of racism over and over again. And given the preponderance of white people in tech, it’s inevitably going to taint the emerging culture on many instances. Ugh. 😕
@futurebird @Blackfist blocked that domain... I'm tired of giving excuses to White Privilege anymore.
@futurebird @Blackfist the poster didn’t know that we are not allowed to make nice white people feel uncomfortable 🤦🏾‍♀️
It’s the unwritten rule! Well, DeSantis has written this rule down.
@futurebird @Blackfist oh yeah, I remember that post, bc I commented that it sounded like he could have been talking about the difference where I currently live in North Idaho between Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls.
@futurebird @Blackfist What an absurd response from the moderator. Going out on a limb here, but isn't "Let's avoid racism by not acknowledging racism" kind of, I dunno, racist?
@futurebird @Blackfist wtf, there was absolutely nothing wrong with this post, one can always wonder if the feeling is justified, we were not there to witness it, but it's a valid feeling, and nothing in the way it is expressed is offensive.
@futurebird @Blackfist @ben Ugh, they even have in their rules "Talking about personal experience is allowed but without attacking all kind of people." Just all sorts of mixed up over there :(
@futurebird @Blackfist I saw this post a day or two ago. I'm an old white guy, and my response ranged from sadness to anger that this would happen, but at no point was "disbelief" one of my responses because I know too many people in my demographic... Still, it's hugely disappointing that anyone would feel justified in suppressing these posts.

@futurebird @Blackfist

The moderator(s) really wouldn't like my story about the racist 3d grade nun who held contests in which only a select handful of white girls won every time.

@futurebird @Blackfist completely unacceptable. Talking about racism and people's experiences should never be treated as "removable content."
@futurebird @Blackfist I’m sorry this post was not greeted more thoughtfully. It certainly made me think about my own interactions with people.
@futurebird Wow. No, that’s garbage. Nothing in that post to offend or alarm anyone, and even if there were ... that’s just weird.

@futurebird @Blackfist So you went hunting for food in an unfamiliar area with unfamiliar people and felt alone and out of place?

Sounds pretty normal to me. What exactly were you expecting?

@futurebird @Blackfist That is disturbing. Do not talk about embedded racism, xenophobia, prejudice and it will disappear ? Same with LGBT, CRT, fascism?
Someone missed the class where they were reading and discussing Polyanna ?
@futurebird @Blackfist This is seriously not ok modding behavior. When we block the lived experience of people who have to deal with racism, the notion of moderation has gone around the bend in a bad way.
