In 2014 Ohio a Cop shot and killed Tamir Rice—an unarmed 12-year-old Black boy—claimed self defense, and was acquitted. He’s out free without facing any accountability.

In 2022 Ohio a white man shot and killed Sinzae Reed—an unarmed 13-year-old Black boy—claimed self defense, and Cops won’t even charge him. He’s out free without facing any accountability.

This is what systemic white supremacy looks like. We’re moving backwards.😓

@QasimRashid part of what angers me in these situations are that these trained police officers with weapons and body armor can use fear as justification, but untrained, unarmed civilians - in too many cases children or people with mental disabilities - are expected to be perfectly calm and in control...
@usdosp @QasimRashid This is horrendous. I agree . In uk it doesn’t help that we have disinvested in mental health so that more people go into crisis & when people are Ill the police are the people that are called . We have had the inappropriate use of tasers in the uk & that may also be part of structural racism.

@stroppypanda @QasimRashid

A big part of the much maligned (and honestly, horribly named) #DefundThePolice movement in the US was that instead of the police being relied on, we get crisis prevention and mental health response when appropriate, rather than just the police responding to everything. It's a shame that so many did not see the wisdom and practicality of that approach.

@usdosp @QasimRashid Totally agree. We need to have proper funding of mental health as a prerequisite of a civilised society. It’s as if people believe mental health is some sort of adjunct rather than a fundamental part of health. In uk we argued that mental health was part of health per se . Unfortunately in elections our country voted in Conservatives who couldn’t care one jot. Nonetheless we will eject the heathens & get a proper government 🤞🤞🤞
@stroppypanda @QasimRashid It seems to the casual observer across the pond that people in your country are learning some hard lessons. Sadly it seems that way too many in our country are incapable of learning.
@usdosp @QasimRashid Discussing the same . It feels as if people are being invited not to think & believe that there is no alternative . That all politicians are ‘ corrupt’ and that immigration/ over population is what drives everything .We also have a drive against education & constant attacks on experts. In uk we genuinely have a terrible explicit link between far right government , their donors and editorials in BBC news. So we get limited scrutiny.
@usdosp @stroppypanda @QasimRashid
The effort also did NOT include the obvious need to rationalize (reduce# and improve) LEO agencies in US.
Fact that every dipwad town has independent police is a remnant of 1600 England. Expensive, inconsistent, ineffective.
Rationalize them all, from DHS to East Podunk, AL.
@QasimRashid At least the Ft Worth cop who got manslaughter, not murder, conviction for Atatiana Jefferson shooting was given 11 yrs plus change. I hope his appeal is not successful. She was babysitting her nephew!
@QasimRashid to be clear Tamir rice had a play gun with the safety colored end cut or broken off. Loehman shot too fast on arrival claiming it looked real - but who gives a 12 year old a play gun modified to look real?
@mike_minnesota @QasimRashid And the cop who shot him faster than you can say the word "gun" was known to be mentally unstable, yet was still hired by Cleveland Police and put on patrol. This is also institutional racism - a white cop, who should never be in uniform, was allowed to be hired and on patrol.
@mike_minnesota @QasimRashid I am guessing the kid did it himself. He wanted his gun to look like the ones all those white kids on those Christmas cards look like?
@mike_minnesota so to be clear, he was unarmed. No need to insinuate a murdered child was at fault.
@QasimRashid @[email protected] pulled up and shot him in less than a second. Did nothing to assess the situation or try to get him to put his hands up or anything. Shoot first is what these guys do when they see a black person.
@mike_minnesota @QasimRashid Ohio is an open carry state, so even if they thought it was real they literally shot him without warning for holding something he could have been legally allowed to do.
@nypinta @QasimRashid understood. Not excusing the police at all- but the “unarmed” description from the original post doesn’t fly in this case.
@nypinta @mike_minnesota @QasimRashid not when he was 12, but I get your point. Gun rights don’t actually extend to POC. Philandro Castile had a legally owned gun that he informed cops about, he did not brandish it, and he was still fatally shot.

@mike_minnesota @QasimRashid No, see, this is what we’re not gonna do.

The cop shot Tamir Rice within TWO SECONDS of when he pulled up. He didn’t even try to ascertain what was going on.

@QasimRashid

John Crawford, a customer at the Walmart in Beavercreek, Ohio.

Then, after the 911 caller, Ronald Ritchie, was determined to have lied to the 911 operator about Crawford's activities in the store that brought the police in the first place, prosecutors didn't charge Ritchie

@paul @QasimRashid John Crawford was killed for carrying a bb gun in a store that sells bb guns.

@QasimRashid *nodds in agreement*

And the worst part: This shit gets exported!

Cops literally cornered and headshot someone for running away - unarmed - and they didn't even saw the courtroom from inside.

Your point is well made and extends beyond the USA.
I took heart from the recent firing and indictment of two Clear County Sheriff's deputies on homicide charges after 22 year old New Zealander Christian Glass was shot dead.
Christian was white, but a slam-dunk release of information and video by lawyers Qusair Mohamedbhai and Siddhartha Rathod dragged the case out from under the carpet.
I hope this helps tip the balance of justice towards black victims too.

In South Africa three white men tried to drown two black teenagers for trying to swim in the pool. Numerous blacks have been killed by racists over the past twenty seven years! When will they be held accountable for their actions?
@QasimRashid they only beat them a little in London

@QasimRashid
I don't agree with "we're moving backwards"

This kind of "law enforcement" has always been prevalent - the difference is that social media & the internet are making it VISIBLE. The killing of Black people by LEOs didn't even make the newspaper when I was a kid, and the officers were never even questioned about it. Most non-Black Americans have never even been aware that this was common.

@QasimRashid
The consensus on the Stanford prison experiment is that the desire to be accepted by the group combined with lack of oversight is what caused the experiment to go crazy.

We have essentially turned all of America into a large-scale version of the Stanford Prison Experiment, and not enough people are terrified of the implications of that.

@QasimRashid Sinzae Reed was murdered on 12 October and your post today is the very FIRST time I've seen his name. How is it not bigger news when a 13-yr-old kid is murdered? Not to mention when the murderer, who reported stopped his truck & got out to kill Sinzae, claims self defense and charges are dropped? WTAF?!
@QasimRashid Coming back to this a month later... Sinzae Reed's murderer apparently is a convicted domestic abuser who's not allowed to possess firearms at all, so why didn't they jail him for that while (supposedly) investigating his ludicrous lies about "self defense?" I'd bet you a mortgage payment that if an adult Black man stopped his vehicle in a white neighborhood, hopped out and murdered a 13-yr-old white kid and drove off, then was ID'd and arrested, he'd not be a free man today.
@QasimRashid
WOW unarmed kids must be SO dangerous in the US
no way I'll ever, ever go there
@QasimRashid i want to retweet / retoot this but i want to put a content warning so im commenting beneath it so i can put a content warning but the information is still findable
@QasimRashid America… you have a problem that is solvable if there is heart enough.
@QasimRashid
When will Brown skinned Asians and Muslims in the US express solidarity with Black Americans by challenging THEIR own racist assumptions that keeps white supremacy in place? Asians and Muslims in the US, considered honorary whites, refuse to stand with Black Americans in openly denouncing racialized aggression against Blacks for fear of losing their own status in the US racial hierarchy.
@QasimRashid these two examples barely scratch the surface.
It's an endemic problem.
"(Shootings of) Black Americans was much higher than that for any other ethnicity, standing at 42 fatal shootings per million of the population as of November 2022"

The trend of fatal police shootings in the U.S. seems to only be increasing each year, with Black civilians having the highest rates of being killed by police.

@QasimRashid you're right. Ohio has always been backwards, though. Maybe as a Michiganian I'm biased, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong.
@QasimRashid Profiling butler and can confirm he looks like the stereotypical white bigot. #justiceforSinzeaReed
