My dream is to compose music for film. To do that, I need some kind of equipment where I can match video, time codes and sequencer tracks. What would I need?

I used Cubase 2.0 on Atari in the 1990s. Since then, I have been away from the business of arranging and composing music apart from Musescore.

REAPER | Audio Production Without Limits

@bluebirch my suggestion would be #Reaper but I'm afraid it's not the most user-friendly out of the box. Which operating system are you on?
@m2m Currently Linux... I have tried some Linux software but it's too cumbersome. I want something that works out of the box. When it comes to music, I want to focus solely on the creative process. I don't want to fiddle with real time kernels and JACK audio.
@bluebirch is SMPTE still a thing? just kidding, I actually know nothing about this (but I'm curious to hear the answers!)
@cambraca @bluebirch SMPTE is very important. Timecode is essential for making music for films. And the SMPTE format is the base for that.
@bluebirch @askin it's inspiring how all these ancient formats have survived (smpte, midi itself) while, say, js frameworks come and go with much drama but little substance..

@cambraca @bluebirch Well, these are different things. SMPTE is a measurement format which is still relevant since film is based on frames per second. MIDI is a protocol which works fine and has got a overhaul with MIDI 2.0.

And the metric system is pretty nifty too - after all these years! ;-)

@askin @bluebirch lol, true. I am curious about MIDI 2.0, I don't think anything I have supports it yet..
@cambraca some manufacturers have started implementing it. I think Roland and Yamaha are among them.
@bluebirch @cambraca You can use any major DAW. Cubase, Logic, Digital Performer, ProTools are commonly used for film scoring. It just depends on your workflow and preferences. If you have a decently powered computer you can make music for films just with that. Many DAWs offer a basic set of tools right out of the box (instrument libraries, plugins). #filmscoring #composing #MusicProduction
@bluebirch Hey ๐Ÿ‘‹
Not sure if you hot what you need by now, but Cubase or most other major DAW's will do that for you. I personally write to picture in my DAE and use Adobe Premier or by now Davinci for any video edits I need to make on personal projects. Works pretty well for me. Hope that helps โ˜บ๏ธ
@bluebirch I still use MOTUโ€™s Digital Performer. I have also heard good things about Reaper
