Out of curiosity, I went back on Twitter’s website to look at the replies to my last Tweet (the one saying I wouldn’t be posting there anymore). And wow, leaving WAS justified.

The amount of Elon bootlicking, of people coping badly with someone leaving their platform and using that as a pretext to just be offensive, and just pure conspiracy nutjobs or people flat out ignoring documented facts… It’s insane.

@thelinuxEXP I had a similar experience with a similar post a few weeks back.
@BrideOfLinux It’s crazy to me to see so many people being so hurt by your decision to not use what they like…
@thelinuxEXP At the same time, a huge number of my followers, especially the folks who interacted with me a lot on Twitter, followed me over to Mastodon, which was a really good thing and made my transition much, much easier.
@BrideOfLinux Most people I interacted with regularly also made the jump, so it’s definitely an easy transition for me too!
I’m sure there are tons of people I haven’t found yet though!
@thelinuxEXP Yup. Every now and then someone from birdsite finds me and follows me. Good thing is that most people are using the same handle, so I can recognize them and follow them back.

Mastodon

@BrideOfLinux @thelinuxEXP Followed or were here already? 😉 Glad you're here anyway.

Movetodon.org isn't giving me any more movers because it seems some, at least, aren't bothering to update their Twitter bios. 🤷‍♂️

@samueljohnson @thelinuxEXP Both followed and here already. I thought about that when I was writing the toot, but figured I didn't need to include that. Guess I did. Glad we're connected here, too.
@thelinuxEXP I went also to Twitter today and the first I see is some conspiracy shit with some transphobia, Twitter has become really trash.. it's insane.
And since when is there a "views" count? I think leaving Twitter was really just the best idea.
@acex404 I tried just browsing the feed, to see if I was missing on anything, and it just felt bad. Everything there looks like someone being angry at something!
@thelinuxEXP
Yes, exactly that! The algorithm is really good in triggering me.. 😅
@acex404 Yeah, it clearly optimizes for knee jerk reactions
@thelinuxEXP I haven't been back in ages, but I feel like that... yea, sounds about right =/
@thelinuxEXP I wasn't surprised when that happened to me. What does surprise me is that people still follow that account over there. Even though my last tweet is "This is my last tweet"
@thelinuxEXP Uff. That aligns with my experience too.
@thelinuxEXP I am mostly a consumer of a tiny amount of social media and I prefer mastodon to twitter. I actually interact more on this platform rather than just consume. I killed my twitter account too since I've grown tired of Elon. If his secret goal was to destroy twitter then I think he may be succeeding. Time will tell.
@dan Yeah, we’ll see how it goes. I might go back to it if I’m the newly created problems are fixed, but for now, I’m having more fun here
@thelinuxEXP I arrived here because of you and I've been really enjoying. Some users have very thin skin, but in general great experience.
@thelinuxEXP
Yeah that's unfortunate, but I think (or hope I guess), that it is a sample bias issue. The type of people to follow you are also the type of people who would switch to Mastodon if they wanted a less toxic place. They wouldn't be confused by multiple instances and stick to Twitter because of that. So if they are still in Twitter, it's likely because they are either Elon bootlickers, or the kind of people who enjoy the current Twitter.
@mrscientific True, I’m certain most people who are invested in the channel and what I make would be more open to the fediverse

@thelinuxEXP Seems like you’ve kept a bigger chunk of your followers than some other people I’ve seen make the switch. Linux users are probably much more receptive to an open source environment like Mastodon.

What differences have you noticed in your interactions here vs. there?

@Ateriath Thankfully I had a Mastodon account way before Twitter went to shit, and I already had a reasonable following there!
Honestly, when I post something here, I never feel dread anymore, however controversial it might be.
People disagree, but they’re civil, their arguments make sense, they don’t argue in bad faith, so mostly every discussion goes well!
On Twitter, I immediately regretted posting anything « hot take-y », because toxic idiots just ran towards the light 😅
@thelinuxEXP I do wonder if the civility is simply a function of the kind of people Twitter is repelling right now, and if that will change as Mastodon becomes more popular. Hopefully it’s more about the structure of Mastodon: the fact that moderation is as distributed as the network itself, and the lack of algorithm pushing posts by bad actors.
@Ateriath It’s possible that the current crowd on Mastodon is made of Twitter refugees that want more civil interactions!
I also think that as there is no algorithm, you don’t have any incitation to be offensive or edgy or to play dumb, which is probably why Twitter was always kind of crappy: the more interactions you had, good or bad, the more visibility you got!
@thelinuxEXP Unfortunately or fortunately all this has exposed just how toxic Twitter has become (or has largely always been...?)
@firestarter451 It probably was always a bit like that, but with some amount of moderation. Now that moderation is out, and the signal has clearly been sent that anything goes, people reveal their true colors even more, I guess
@thelinuxEXP So far #JohnMastodon has received only the smartest of the TT bunch ... And it will be like this for a while
@thelinuxEXP Same thing happened to me, although got many positive comments, I also got hate for explaining my decision. I love leaving a toxic environment.
@Nors3 Yeah I got both, but the toxic idiots were more numerous
@thelinuxEXP did anyone mock your frenchness?
@Voradams Nah, you can’t mock Frenchness, it would be like mocking ZE PERFECTION
@thelinuxEXP Elon fanboys are that kind of people that complain about snowflakes yet they get butthurt at anyone slightly opposing their viewpoints, even if reasonably
@realone0217 Exactly! They’re doing the same thing they said others were doing to them before…
@thelinuxEXP Good on you for making the jump though!^^
@alfredohno I’ve had this account for a while now, but I only started promoting it recently! I still need to redo my outro sequence to push Mastodon instead of Twitter
@thelinuxEXP Yeah it's bad... I haven't had any bad replies myself but I have seen more scam bots, auto-replies to keywords, etc.
@thelinuxEXP This is something I´ve always noticed from "that" kind of people. If they meet someone exercising their right to do something else, they will just lose their shit.
Doesn´t matter if we're talking about leaving Twitter, not eating meat, protecting your privacy, or whatever.
They just get so offended that anyone might suggest that their opinion is wrong.
@thelinuxEXP People are jerks. I'm sorry you experienced that. I'm new to the site, but so far I'm digging it here. Hope you are too!
@TaranehtheTulip Oh it’s OK, it just confirmed that for now, Twitter is a toxic platform I want no part in!

@thelinuxEXP The clickfarms are in full psycho reply mode. The zero follower army of fake accounts is replying by script and liking by the millions anti reality stupid posts from the fascists.

Total hell and has been for months. A sewer of stupid people.

@thelinuxEXP
Twitter is also starving your feed if you don’t pay up. Their ad slogan is you have to pay for ‘quality conversations’.
@thelinuxEXP don't you have to do Twitter promo as part of your YouTube job? Or doesn't Twitter give you much traffic?
@hannemaes I shared my videos with my 30K followers there and didn’t notice an impact at all when I stopped! It brought something like 100 views in the first 24h of the video, unless I talked about something big and got retweeted like crazy, but that rarely happened!
@thelinuxEXP Nice! It's good you are not dependent on one platform!

@thelinuxEXP

Twitter, you said ?

Mmm... What is it ?? 😂

@thelinuxEXP that's why I left too, around the start of November things on Twitter really started looking like they're taking a turn for the worse with the Muskrat in control. The Elon fanboys seem to only been getting worse

@thelinuxEXP I think that the more welcoming and better behaving community here on Mastodon is mostly an effect of the platform being smaller and (so far) more enthusiast oriented.

If more casual people start switching, the community will likely turn into what Twitter has now.

It's also possible though, the two social networks will remain separate and will live along side each other with their own respective communities which could, in theory, retain the friendliness of this platform.

@thelinuxEXP a agree with you.
The issue isn't social media but his implementation and gouvernance.
You can't have a descent conversation people who don't want to have a conversation. Twitter is more a battlefield that a one place to chat / get inform.
We see other issue on other social like Facebook where video form YouTube or other video streaming platform are repost without any context.
We have the study we know the issue of social media on mental health, disinformation, conspiracy theory.
@thelinuxEXP i normally don't make replies on this account due to its purpose, but I honestly love this take. Getting the furry community to change social media sites is a damn nightmare.
