A dream is a wish your heart makes ๐Ÿš‚ โœจ
@tiffanycli A dream it shall remain for the United States, but NOT for many other countries which are moving forward. Our culture of shareholder supremacy coupled with a laissez faire anti-competitive marketplaceโ€“in synergy with uncontrolled inequity will never permit the installation of this infrastructure.
@Daniel_Berky ๐Ÿ˜”

@tiffanycli @Daniel_Berky

It's only been that way since the late early 1980s, though. Blame Reagan. Think about the Interstate Highway system. The telephone network. The Internet. The main difference between those and everything else is that the Federal Government either made it happen or controlled it while it happened. Big projects have big risks and needs a big benefactor.

But as long as people believe the nonsense that "Government IS the problem" we're dead in the water.

@Daniel_Berky @tiffanycli If only #Muskrat focused on this instead of trolling, destroying the birdsite & his reputationโ€ฆ
@Str8nger @tiffanycli Sometimes we set too high a bar on rich entitled people. People who were born rich and never had to struggle or be accountable for their entire life. We should not be surprised when psychopaths fail, despite the warped power balance.
@Daniel_Berky @tiffanycli our society idolizes innovators & success, which often results in the idol losing touch w/ reality & falling victim to hubris.
@Str8nger @tiffanycli ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘โ˜‘๏ธ Quite right. If I may add, we also conflate "innovation" and "success" with obscene wealth and avarice. We sometimes forget that those who got rich, may have gotten that way by sheer dumb luck or stealing somebody else's idea. The myth of the "omnipotence of the marketplace" is often oversold.

@tiffanycli #Detroit to #Chicago and a #Chicago to #Dallas HSR line.

One can dream indeed. ๐Ÿ’ญ

@tiffanycli continued inclusion of a foreign country on this map is amusing :)
@tiffanycli I mean let's make it 4 countries in total and add a bridge to Cuba...
@tiffanycli I very much appreciate the tiny โ€œHampton Roadsโ€ spur.
@tiffanycli If China can do this - and a lot more, along with Europe, there's no reason we can't. Its utterly ridiculous that everything is either "drive" or "fly"
@pallsopp42 @tiffanycli I dont know, scotrail cancel trains cos its too hot, or too wet, or leaves on the line, etc etc not sure weather conditions are totally compatible ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ
@Legend @tiffanycli Line maintenance is, I'm sure, an ever-present task. In the desert southwest, there might be challenges with blowing dust and sand from time to time so maybe "self-cleaning" sections at the front of the train might be needed - but maybe not. We move freight on what looks like pretty marginal rail bed all across the country...so why not people on modern purpose-built rail bed? We have the space.
@tiffanycli itโ€™s the infrastructure bill we needโ€ฆ
@tiffanycli We have the most beautiful train station here in Boise, no trains. We have such a beautiful country to see by train and itโ€™s a real shame itโ€™s so hard. Would love to have a high-speed train to SF from here.
@ev We have the best free and public national parks in the world. Every kind of landscape you could want. But we canโ€™t get to places.
@tiffanycli I took this shot of Mt Shasta out of the back of an Amtrak train in 2004 when I bought a 30 day pass. It was a glorious trip and I met such interesting people. It really is a lovely way to travel.
@ev @tiffanycli Itโ€™s interesting how trains always evoke those feelings of nostalgia in the US. You would have to overcome the "lovely" and replace it with "fast", I suppose.
@ev @tiffanycli I spent a week in Japan with a rail pass and came back incredibly jealous, but I do love the back window of an Amtrak train.
@chrisfried @ev @tiffanycli
Thereโ€™s a club of us for whom the back window of an Amtrak train is some sort of secret paradise.
@chrisfried Now try a Euro rail pass!
@NebbyBeulah Itโ€™s on my todo list!

@tiffanycli every time I see this, I groan. yes, we can have high speed rail here. all you need is political will and a near dictatorial executive branch.

You could roll the dice and get an FDR. He was unmatched in building. I really don't think that person exists today in the political landscape, nor do I think Democrats can unfuck themselves to do it.

Yes, it's right there. The technology, sure. But it'll die a death of a thousand miserable NIMBY shitheels. Not to mention GOP griefers.

@MisterWanko @tiffanycli Or maybe just bring the whole rail infrastructure under one single entity, controlled by the state. Like in other parts of the world, such as Europe, it's done.
@tiffanycli A great dream! It would be even better with a direct rail line between Denver and Kansas City.
@cherylgoldk @tiffanycli
Denver to KC, KC to Memphis, Memphis to Atlanta.
@tiffanycli This looks like a science fiction map but it would be completely doable if we wanted it enough.
@tiffanycli I really thought we would have this in my lifetime. I mean, why not? As usual, though, nothing going through the beautiful upper northwest parts of the country
@tiffanycli america with a competent rail system is a dream worth dreaming of. #hurryup
@tiffanycli we could have been ticket to ride ๐Ÿ˜”
@tiffanycli
The map closely resembles the current Amtrak map on many routes. I saw somewhere that Amtrak was going to upgrade their DC/ NYT tracks for faster trains, but nothing elsewhere planned.
@tiffanycli This would be sweet, I just priced Amtrak, Chicago to LA , 43 hours. This looks like +/- 12 to 13.
@tiffanycli would be amazing. Even better would be this plus SLC to Portland and MSP to Seattle.
@tiffanycli yes, absolutely. My dream also includes a line between Minneapolis and Seattle, running down to Salt Lake from Spokane. Otherwise there is a big empty space and lots of us left out.
@kjbrowning definitely this is just a barebones map. But itโ€™s already far, far beyond what we have now ๐Ÿ˜ญ
@tiffanycli So true! I love train travel. This week has been a great example of why we need alternatives to flying and driving!!
@tiffanycli There is no way this is happening in the US.
@tiffanycli in a perfect beautiful world... Maybe someday... ๐Ÿฅบโœจ
@tiffanycli
nice idea, but it won't happen in my lifetime.
@tiffanycli railways need a revival
@tiffanycli Iโ€™d love to see this happen. Does the rest of the country have as bad a NIMBY problem as CA?
@tiffanycli There still needs to be a higher speed line across the top though. โ˜บ๏ธ
@tiffanycli I wish it could be more than a dream. ๐Ÿ˜“
@Tiffany Li Do it US, do it please :)
Is that some real map or just a wish?
@tiffanycli Always wondered why USA never done this, for instance in France we have TGV (Train ร  Grande Vitesse - literally "high speed train") since early 80's, running at 300km/h.
@LaurentFr @tiffanycli probably because the #fossilfuel industry said NEIN!
@tiffanycli Did you know that France recently banned short-haul domestic flights?

@tiffanycli This should the "Highway system" equivalent of the 21st century. Bring back railroads.

That's the only solution to traffic and climate goals.
