Friendica is a very flexible type of server on the Fediverse: it lets you follow Mastodon accounts, other types of Fediverse account, RSS feeds, Twitter etc. There are no specific character limits on posts. It also has additional features such as, calendars, photo albums, groups etc.

It has just received a major update, you can follow the official project news account at @news

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@feditips @news What servers do you recommend?
@feditips Hi there, thanks for the info! I think it would also be really helpful in these kinds of articles to talk about the humans building and maintaining these tools and what their stated goals are.
@feditips @news this could be why I’m starting to see what seem like VERY long posts in my feeds.
@news @feditips @holymachina Possibly, but apparently there is a reasonably easy to change setting in Mastodon that the instance manager can change to allow longer posts. I run my instance on Friendica so I've forgotten the exact details.
@feditips @news tried to sign up for two different instances; both said"This site has exceeded the number of allowed daily account registrations. Please try again tomorrow."
@feditips @news @geraldz Join ours social.trom.tf/ - we have custom themes and our server works perfectly fine. I use it daily. We also have around 1k users.

@feditips I didn't know about the Twitter part of that. Can you associate it with a Twitter account so as to reply to tweets too?
@feditips @news Do you need a separate friendica identity? Or can you use your existing mastodon identity?

@geolaw @feditips @news Well, according to this #reddit thread, it is possible to import your #Mastodon contacts to #Friendica with CSV.

What I'm wondering about: can you import posts etc too? And what are the best practices for moving from here to there? Does it work like moving from one Masto instance to another (i.e. with an alias)?

Moving from Mastodon to Friendica

Hi there, I'm thinking about moving from Mastodon to Friendica. Does anyone here done this already or know a how-to ressource? My minimal...

@feditips @news @geolaw Friendica is a social media platform that speaks ActivityPub. It's not a Mastodon client, so you would need a separate identity. But one of the things I love about the Fediverse is that you can move your accounts from one instance to another. You can look at mastodon.social/settings/migra… to see how.
@geolaw @feditips @news it would be a different server, you would migrate from your current one to a new one
@news @feditips @geolaw You need an account on the server you use, so just as when you change mastodon servers, you need to change your identity when you create one on friendica
@geolaw @feditips yes, your server has mastodon installed as software. you would need to register on an instance running friendica : https://dir.friendica.social/

@feditips @news I've taken a swing at self-hosting almost all the ActivityPub tools, and Friendica is the one I keep coming back to. So far, it has been the only one with a balance of ease-of-setup, features, and flexibility.

I love how admins promote Masto (& my comments):

Masto uses an open API for its servers, which means that anyone can write an app
(even teen hackers!)

The easiest way to find out whether it works is to download a free Masto app and try signing in
(test it yourself, we didn't bother!)

It should be noted that Masto developers don’t officially support this
(good luck sucker!)

if it stops working check with the maintainers of your Fediverse platform
(like you know who that is!)

@feditips This is what I mentioned in your tweet @shoq
