The full blade set for the Vestas 15 MW prototype offshore wind turbine has arrived to Østerild National Test Centre in Denmark where they will be installed.
[This one blade is longer than Utrecht's Dom tower, my own point of reference ;)]

Vestas V236-15.0 MW™ Blades Reach Final Destination – Photos

The full blade set for the Vestas V236-15.0 MW™ prototype offshore wind turbine has arrived to Østerild National Test Centre in Denmark where they will be installed. The blade set arrived at the port of Hanstholm on Sunday, 18 December, and was then transported to Østerild National Test Centre. The 115.5-metre blades for the prototype […]

Offshore Wind
There's a reason that production lines for (components) of these offshore wind turbines are preferably located in or near sea ports ;)
But onshore wind turbines are becoming larger too.

Why is it that these blades are so huge? Bigger = more power generated?

Surely we should be aiming at smaller, more efficient turbines. These use fewer resources in their making, transportation and construction. They also look less unsightly on the landscape, and thus improve the chance of passing planning permission.

@Jon6705 Bigger, more efficient, and more cost-efficient. Designs above 15 MW, already on the table.
@Sustainable2050 that are the blades for a turbine? look huge.
@iron_bug Yes, and indeed, they're 115 meter long!
@iron_bug @Sustainable2050 It looks like a barrier for the whole interchange at once. 😀
@Sustainable2050 There's an impressive video about the transport of a slightly smaller blade through the tunnels, towns, and roundabouts of Madeira. The final leg of the journey is up to the mountain plateau of Paul da Serra where there now is quite a collection of wind turbines.

@mschomm @Sustainable2050 Yes, I got captured watching this to the end... poor flower beds in the middle of those roundabouts 😥
@martinvermeer @Sustainable2050 Don't worry: The flowerbeds have been restored in the meantime.
(I am in Madeira every few months and travel part of the route taken here quite often)
@Sustainable2050 Idly wondering if there is a #geospatial application able to route out the transport of these monsters. One hell of a job description 🤣
