I hope everyone is physically prepared for this Winter Storm, but now it's time to mentally prepare for Canadians to tell us we don't even know what cold is.
@RickiTarr
Friends in Minnesota will throw in a couple of words too. 😂
@Pagan_Activist TRUE, I forgot the Upper Peninsula
@Pagan_Activist @RickiTarr y'all have deep freezes compared to southern Ontario.
@Pagan_Activist @RickiTarr probably the people from Finland (community) whose ancestors moved there from Finland (country). 😂
@jiinissi @Pagan_Activist @RickiTarr Yes the Fins have done well here, but the Icelanders consider this cold snap beach weather.

@ddmgmgh

True. I’m of Scandinavian ancestry and I know Icelanders are hearty people!

@Pagan_Activist #Saskatchewan and in particular our area of the province has the highest population of Icelanders outside the country of Iceland.
However my ancestors were not Icelandic. I still question their sanity for choosing this place on days like this. 🤔
@ddmgmgh @Pagan_Activist Likewise, Dan. In the late 1800s the Icelanders migrated south, and established the short-lived Republic of New Iceland on the west shores of Lake Winnipeg, centred around Gimli MB. I often wondered... if you're going south, why settle in an area as cold and unforgiving in winter as the Manitoba Interlakes? Why not keep on going till you get to the Carribean? The obvious answer is fish; the lake was teeming with them and it was a business they knew. Still...
@dderyk @Pagan_Activist That makes perfect sense. Still...😆
@jiinissi @Pagan_Activist @RickiTarr some of my former Finnish in-laws live in the U.P. and refer to themselves as 'Findians'
@RickiTarr #CueTheMusic "I wanna know what cold isssss I waaaant you to showwww meeee🎶"
@RickiTarr *Minnesota enters the chat*
@SinclairLewis @RickiTarr I believe northern Montana would also like a polite word. 🙂
@RickiTarr Yeah, well they like Molson, so what do they know? lol jk
@RickiTarr
But, surely, they are to nice to do such a thing? 😆
@RickiTarr Where I live, it's people from Ohio saying the same thing.
@blackcat @RickiTarr can confirm. am from Ohio 😂
@RickiTarr
Ha! My mom used to say that. “You kids don’t know what cold is!” At the s time we were living in off-base in a Japanese house heated by one big kerosene space heater and several portable lantern-like kerosene heaters. It was cold.
@avertexofmyown For awhile, when I was a kid, we lived in a farm house that was only heated by a wood burning pot belly stove in the middle of our house, after baths we'd all wrap up in towels and gather around it.
@RickiTarr Mainers could also remind you of this fact if you prefer…
@RickiTarr So. . .how bad is this storm? Can I brag to my family members that it’s absolutely gorgeous in San Diego or should I worry about their health and well-being?
@lawyerjsd Should be good if they stay inside, but I do worry about the places that aren't prepared for the cold.
@RickiTarr I live in Minnesota, which means I live north of about half of all Canadians.
@RickiTarr and people over the age of 35
@climatebrad No lie, I used to think adults talked about weather because they were bored, but I just have a genuine interest in it lol
@RickiTarr @climatebrad Same! People always dismiss the weather as 'small talk. ' It's so unfair-- the weather is everything.
@RickiTarr I expect the same from my relatives in northern Illinois. But I readily admit that my last 20+ years in Georgia has thinned my blood.
@logn84 The older I get the more I think about spending January and February at the beach.
@RickiTarr Yup. That’s how we ended up in Georgia’s Golden Isles after retiring.
@logn84 I do love Georgia, but I would miss the seasons, of course I say that now...lol
@logn84 @RickiTarr
Not to nerd out too much, but I am@of the understanding that the reason you can’t handle the cold like you once could is because your capillaries have migrated closer to the skin’s surface in order to dissipate heat better to keep you cool, which is much more often needed in Hotlanta. Opposite happens moving North, your capillaries recede to keep you warm but they are then not as good in keeping your cool in hot weather.
@RickiTarr Canadian here: just feel your feelings and don’t worry about the sass.
@Jdefoe If you're feeling cold one Canadian will mentally put a blanket around you and make you a cup of something hot lol
@RickiTarr at the end of the day, we’re all just ppl trying to get through this life. It’s ts been bitterly cold where I live for a week straight. The dog and I are so excited that things are straight to warm up today.
@Jdefoe Indeed, that looks very cozy.
@RickiTarr for sure. And a little bonus photobombing from our daughter.
@RickiTarr As a Virginian, I will fully admit that I don't know much about the super cold, but what I do know is that our weather is a shitshow, and unpredictable as hell
@HemlockBB @RickiTarr And any bad weather causes a panic in Virginia… Lived here 30 years hoping that people will develop common sense about bad weather, it will never happen. I would be better off wishing for a pony!
@fuzzface @HemlockBB I always feel like people start driving like idiots the minute it snows, like You Can't take your Prius out in this.
@RickiTarr @HemlockBB In Northern Virginia a common practice is "I'm driving a really big truck that has four wheel drive. It may be snowing, icy, and limited visibility but my super truck will allow me to do 75 on a road."
@fuzzface @RickiTarr @HemlockBB This is classic driver behavior All over rural america.
@noahcarver @RickiTarr @HemlockBB Trucks can be amazing vehicles. But like any tool they have to be used skillfully and intelligently. I’ve seen too many trucks in NoVa that were likely purchased because they were just HUUUGE. No evidence they have ever been used for work and the winch still has all of the factory paint in it. Waste of a good truck IMHO.
@fuzzface @RickiTarr @HemlockBB Agreed. You can absolutely tell the difference between a working truck and a truck that someone's bought because they think it's cool not only from looking at the condition of the truck but also by the actions of its driver.
@fuzzface @noahcarver @HemlockBB Yeah I've never understood having something that expensive if you aren't going to use it purposefully.
