Any news on #washpost creating a server?

@abeorch @drewharwell

My question too. Is WaPo going to create its own server?

Seems like it would be a good idea to control your own social media platform.

@abeorch @drewharwell I would love it if Washington Post created a server. I know they're technically a hometown newspaper, but they're also a national as well as a worldwide newspaper as well #commonsensejournalism

@drewharwell @willoremus @taylorlorenz @teddyamen @tonyromm @Shira @rachellerman @pbump @NaomiNix @nitashatiku @[email protected] @JosephMenn @Ddiamond @databae @cristianolima

You need to tell them that if they disallow follows then they won't have any reach. You got to have followers to be seen on Mastodon.

OK, this is my bad. journa.host was muted here. I've since removed that.

@drewharwell whereโ€™s The Post?
@gyitsakalakis @drewharwell There's always @theprospect while you're waiting. (I am not a journo there or anything...just think they're committing excellent acts of journalism!)
@drewharwell @willoremus @taylorlorenz @nitashatiku Someone needs to tell Jeremy Barr to get on Mastodon.
@drewharwell huge number of tech and tech-adjacent reporters! And still not enough, I am sure.
@cmyanko Hmm. Feels like tech and politics are fairly connected these days, no? Also, Dan Diamond, Tony, Philip and all do focus on politics/policy.
@drewharwell @willoremus @taylorlorenz @teddyamen @tonyromm @Shira @rachellerman @pbump @NaomiNix @nitashatiku @jeremybowers @JosephMenn @Ddiamond @databae @cristianolima @jeremybmerrill @andrewvandam @perrybacon @gbrockell Do they offer free links to their articles, or is it all paywall? I follow if the former, otherwise it's just an adventure in frustration.
@corbin_lambeth I try to when I remember. We all have 10 free (gift) links to share a month.
@teddyamen
THANK YOU! (and followed) โ˜บ๏ธ
@corbin_lambeth I personally do some free links. (We are allowed a handful each month.) But the Post has a lot of deep, important reporting and analysis, so I encourage you to subscribe if you can afford to! Thanks for reading our tweets/toots either way.
@perrybacon Thank you. I may subscribe in the future if the deal is right, but right now I have a subscription to the NYT.
@corbin_lambeth @drewharwell @willoremus @taylorlorenz @teddyamen @tonyromm @Shira @rachellerman @pbump @NaomiNix @nitashatiku @jeremybowers @JosephMenn @Ddiamond @databae @cristianolima @jeremybmerrill @andrewvandam @perrybacon @gbrockell I know this may sound crazy, but journalists do need to eat just like the rest of us. Paywalls are frustrating, but demanding that all news be free ignores the need for real journalists to do real work.
@charles @drewharwell @willoremus @taylorlorenz @teddyamen @tonyromm @Shira @rachellerman @pbump @NaomiNix @nitashatiku @jeremybowers @JosephMenn @Ddiamond @databae @cristianolima @jeremybmerrill @andrewvandam @perrybacon @gbrockell Sure. I get that, but I already have a subscription to the NYT. I cannot subscribe to everywhere, and the reality is that if other journalists want their articles to be seen and appreciated, they have to make them free from time to time.
@corbin_lambeth that's great you're an NYT subscriber. agree it's a lot to ask people to subscribe to more than one news outlet. but just out of curiosity -- would you have paid for an NYT subscription if they didn't have a paywall?

@willoremus it's unclear as to whether or not I would have paid. The past answer has been sometimes yes and sometimes no, pending what deals they are offering. Would I pay standard asking price? No.

What finally got me to sign up is a one-year program for a dollar a week. What's WaPo's best deal?

@corbin_lambeth thereโ€™s often a big end of year sale i thinkโ€ฆ. iโ€™ll post it here when it happens
@drewharwell @willoremus @taylorlorenz @Shira @pbump @JosephMenn @databae and none of them use something else than mastodon? there you go, have a hug or a masto bug: :comfyhug1::comfyhug2:
@drewharwell Thatโ€™s so helpful. Thank you
@drewharwell thanks for sharing your blocklist
@[email protected]@reneeygraham of Boston Globe is here as well. While I still occupy the lobby of this Resettlement Office, pondering how we don't allow the "popular kids" table in the cafeteria. The problem has long been in the media that celebrity journalists are not interacting with a diversity of independent journalists and scholars to seek a deeper understanding of what they see, their sources, and their understanding of events. Just a thought. Example to follow.
This is great. Fantastic to see the mastodon momentum ๐Ÿ‘ Thanks
I don't trust anyone associated with the Bezos Post.
