Changing the lightbulb on a 2,000 ft radio tower (this video makes my whole body react woaaah)

The thing I keep wondering is….

WHO’S BUILDING THIS STUFF?

@stux I've done work at heights and it's scary every time, but this was extra lashings of scary watching that much weight coming down and needing to be managed . . . Glad I'm retired from all that now.

@stux have you watched Fall (2022)?

I haven’t yet, but it seems to be related to this thread: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_(2022_film)

Fall (2022 film) - Wikipedia

@stux and some of us have to think about how we’ll get you down from up there if something happens! :)
@cory_foy Respect!  Heights is the only thing I (developed) a fear off :(
@stux openAI bots have become sentient and are building everything
@stux
The more interesting question to me is who's fixing it. I know the answer. Those are steeple jacks. Here in Sacramento there's a whole family that does it and we've had to hire them to change the aircraft warning lights at the top of some very tall buildings' cooling towers or decorative metal spires. 🙂
@stux
Putting the safety lines on those footholds with a big loop that could easily slide right off makes me cringe!
@TerryHancock @stux You noticed that also!😬
@stux this video makes me uncomfortable
@stux Not enough money in the world to get me to do that.
@stux when he starts clipping onto the bare metal posts, that when I'm outta there. Funny how the bulb replacement isn't that different from a fixture at home.
@stux uggghh hard pass.🤢
@stux At the end the bulb looks like it's a plastic action figure inside a drinking glass
@stux
serious pucker factor. 😬
@stux why did I watch this 😲😲😲🫠🫠🫠
@stux Nope! Nope! Nope! Nope! Not me!
@stux My uncle was the chief electrician of the Empire State Building in the 70’s. They used to pay a retired tech 2 week’s salary to do that operation. You popped a hatch in the middle of the observation platform on floor 102 to get there. He popped it once and let me look out, when I was a tween. They had to change the carbon arc bulbs every couple months, I think?
@stux OMG I just checked and the phone number is still the ESB. I did not expect that, 50y later!
@karabaic
Oooh, that's a familiar surname. Did somebody from your family come to the US from Yugoslavia/Croatia?
@kirenida Yes. There are clusters of the name in Medway, OH; Seattle, WA; and NYC. All somewhat related, but what matters in Croatian culture for close relatives is clan name. My family’s clan is Jakovic.
@kirenida My daughter is the Paydirt columnist for Slate. My sister is a commercial illustrator who has a lot of work around; she was somewhat celebrated for successfully suing Bob Guccione for stealing artists’ work a while back. I used to be mildly active in comp.risks and comp.sys.next back in the USENET days.
@karabaic ah, so they're probably from Istria, as there is a village named Jakovići there. Most people with the Karabaić surname I know about come from the Krk island and one of them is a well-known vocalist in local alternative bands (Hrvoje Karabaić, currently in Po' Metra Crijeva (half a meter of intestines), an Istrian-metal band :D).
But plenty of people here have no relation to the village with their surname. For example, there is a village Paladini in Istria, but I have no family there.

@kirenida We are from Punat! Probably related to Hrvoje, in some way. We lost the ’ during American assimilation. 😅

Do you have some links to the music? I’m interested!

@karabaic

Have a listen at https://pometracrijeva.bandcamp.com

They make quite heavy metal music inspired by traditional istrian musical scales.

For a bit lighter modern take stemming from the same sources, have a listen to https://veja.bandcamp.com/

Po' Metra Crijeva

Ča-Metal™ bend koji inspiraciju crpi iz istarskih legendi i priča, a glazbu radi pod utjecajem istarske ljestvice i metala.

@stux so nervous watching!,,

@stux Q: How many people do you need to change a lightbulb in a radio tower?

A: Three. One to change the lightbulb and the other two to carry his massive balls

@stux found my dream job
@stux every nightmare condensed into one bite sized cube
@stux I've done just a little bit of tower work and it gets less scary the longer you're up.
@stux I almost threw up. I'm not afraid of roller coasters going high but this is waaaaay too high.
@stux totally scary, but it looks beautifully serene up there. I imagine it's like you're the only person that exists.
@stux No. No no no no no no no. Nooooooo. There has to be a better way! 🤣
@stux Where I nope out is the top bit where the clamps aren't actually secure. They're just sitting on the rails and could easily fall off.

@stux

Eeeek. I had to stop watching as my legs went weak! And I was only watching a video!

@stux i’d make extra money each climb by packing coal up my arse and making diamonds
@stux Been there, done that. Though my last tower was only 1000 feet 😁
@GoatsLive 'only'  Hahaha that's a rainbow pants for me afterwards

@stux

Oh gods nope nope nope nope nope

#nope

@stux Oh my goodness. Scary. I would get to the top then discover I left the new bulb behind.
@stux wonder if one day we’ll be able to have a drone do this. After seeing that move trailer (“Fall” i think), you couldn’t pay me enough to do this
@stux Not even going to try and watch this. 🙅🏻‍♀️
@stux I very nearly felt vertigo watching that. My hats off to the folks who do that. Not for me! 😳🫢😳
@stux And now I am here fearing that the next thing you hear would be: “FUUUUUCK. Brought the wrong one.”
@stux totally could’ve done without him hanging the camera over the edge and pointing straight down. Definitely not necessary
@stux Here‘s the video I stumbled upon several years ago. Quite similar, but worth watching also. https://youtu.be/2A_h2AjJaMw

@stux I am never complaining about the difficulty changing my bathroom light again.

@stux What scares me the most about watching people do these is that the point they are attaching their safety gear to is the same point they are putting their hand hold on, and there's not even a hook there, which makes me feel like if it breaks or they just slip off it in the wrong way they could fall.

This is a job where the worker needs to be replaced by robots.
