Are there any good #Muslim instances on #mastodon?

I have a friend who has experienced so much racism and surveillance that she's wary of using social media at all. I was thinking that a server run by and for Muslims like herself might be a safer place to plug in.

Please share suggestions or RT if your followers might know. Thanks!

Thank you everyone for so many boosts and helpful replies! And for responding to the troll whose post seems to be gone before I even saw it. 😂

Well handled, Mastodon community.

A lot of people have said they'd like to find something like this as well, so I want to pass on https://absolutelyhar.am which is just the kind of thing I was looking for.

Also, I want to tell everyone that is recommending other good servers run by people not from the Muslim community how silly you sound. I appreciate the good intentions but it's like a friend telling you about racism they experienced and you respond by saying you don't see race.

At best it's unhelpful and invalidating. It is also an utter failure to fully see your friend, and a refusal to address the systems that are harming them.

@ruby

You have great intentions but your proposed solution could cause the problem that you want to avoid: Just because a Muslim person runs a mastodon instance doesn't mean that this individual would never give data to someone you don't want them to give it to. And just because a person isn't Muslim doesn't mean they're going to track you. Chat with folks from the Electronic Freedom Foundation. Better personal security comes from transparent oversight and reliable actors.

@ruby that's what i was going to point out absolutelyhar.am as well, glad others brought it up!
@ruby
Yeah!! Hope you find a place where your friend can feel safe.
@ruby Apparently reporting works better here than elsewhere.
@project1enigma @ruby This is one of many reasons why I <3 Mastodon.

@ruby I can’t vouch for anything about this server but I saw it go buy on another looking for xyz post.

absolutelyhar.am

@aimless @ruby The founder is pretty cool.
@aimless @ruby my friend @tariq runs that one, can probably help speak to whether it meets your needs.
@ruby Poking through the server list, the only one I found was the same one Aimless just posted. It looks like they are just getting started, only 19 users. https://mastodonservers.net/server/852-absolutely-har-am
Absolutely Har.am Mastodon Server Instance

A Muslim(-ish) online community for anyone who identifies with Muslims or Islam in any shape or form. Part of the Mastodon cinematic fediverse.

@ruby there are a number of #Arabic speaking ones, but I am unsure if they have a stated religion
@ruby I have not seen any but maybe @omarsakrpoet might offer any suggestions?
@ruby you could try mstdn.my (Malaysian instance), a lot would be in Bahasa but it is in English too.
@ruby I'm a Jew and I've found a safe, happy place on Mastodon.Art. @Curator here would ABSOLUTELY NOT allow your friend to be made to feel unsafe or unwelcome in anyway. If she creates any sort of art, I'd direct her over here.
@DaleR @ruby  We're currently closed but if your friend would like an invite I'll DM you one. We run a safe space for marginalised folk here, our mod team is *minority* white, and we absolutely do not tolerate racism.
@ruby Don't know about Muslim instances, but if you/she don't find the community you are looking for, smallish instances with active moderation and clear rules against harassment would be the next best place to look. Also, check the policy on e.g. whether law enforcement is allowed on the instance. scholar.social feels safe to me and has active moderation. It defeds from instances inclusive of law enforcement members.

@ruby I know nothing about the admin but a Google search led to this possibility:

@ruby they are told at the mosque to stay away from internet, media, ..., books, ..., knowledge.
So, it is just an excuse, that they do not trust certain platforms, because they do not trust any. It is (like in) a cult.
@nushi @ruby You're being a troll, making offensive generalizations that are obviously false — and trivially easy to falsify.
@stevendbrewer @ruby what is false? Although I am an atheist, I have many muslim friends. We often have these kinds of debates. This is how I know these things.
Anyway, nothing personally offensive in my comment. It is a generalisation, as you say it.
@nushi @ruby As soon as you say "they," you're othering people. Many people go to mosques where these things are not said. To dismiss all of Islam as a "cult" makes it evident you're being intentionally offensive.

@nushi

Bullshit. You have zero idea what is discussed at a mosque. You are a racist bigot.

Reported and blocked.

@ruby Let me know where your friend ends up! I’m interested in a Muslim server and I have a few sisters that would be interested as well. If your friend is comfortable with sending me a direct message on here I’d be more than happy to connect! Thank you so much for this!!
@ruby Muslims are always welcome on WhiteSmokeBBQ.Social. Our instance doesn't care what you call God". "But beware, there's lots of pork posts.
@Bianco @ruby
Violations of kashrut AND halal, joy. 😕
@Bianco @ruby The above toot is being mass-reported by vulpine.club. Odd instance may I say. Nazis who hate Muslims that use pronouns? Very odd. None the less, YES, Muslims are very welcome to join our instance.
نرحب أصدقائي! 🙏

@Bianco

In addition to the pork joke being in poor taste, this is not a helpful toot since you either don't understand or don't care about the unique challenges faced by people to are marginalized by our dominant culture.

@ruby That's the thing, it wasn't a joke. Many of my friends are Muslim. I was just putting it out their that their are recipes that involve pork that are posted on this instance. Many Muslim won't find this offensive, but there are some that would. Example: Modern Iran would not have a problem with a pork recipe post. Taliban Supporter probably would. It was just a disclaimer, not a joke.
@ruby grammar failure....you can't kick me now. 😅
@ruby There is a big difference between Shia's and Sunni's. Culture plays into to it too. 🙏
@ruby
I hope your friend finds a safe instance.
@ruby you're a very thoughtful friend ^_^

@ruby hi!

A few of us have been working on setting up a Pakistani instance, moderated mostly by us, open to everyone though.

Its online, just needs a few finishing touches though, so we havent done any membership drives yet.

Maybe your friend would like it better there?

@ruby this is a question i likewise would love to find an answer to. Not for myself but friends from other sites.

@ruby

> surveillance

I would advise against joining a niche server then. It would be easy to identify as affiliated to the server niche purpose. (Though, still take recs specially regarding moderation into account when choosing a server)

@fabianhjr @ruby #mastodon offers higher levels of #privacy :
1) there is no generalized "real name" policy (unless a specific instance decides and enforces so *for its members* ) so you can disclose as much as you decide of your identity;
2) it is extremely easy to have multiple accounts with different identities even on different instances, and easily move through them *in the same app* (like #tusky for android). This is extremely useful to keep work, family, hobbies, politics, sex, friends *distinct* on (specific?) instances;
3) using #Tor (a privacy-preserving distributed free VPN) is not impeded by any instance I know.
@ruby you can set your posts privacy to followers only and enable follow requests if you want to moderate who has access to your profile more. You should be able to do that on any instance/server.

@ruby

I don't have the answer. I've seen the same concern posted from several different communities. I believe that each should have a voice and I hope they each find a safe space here.

@ruby Although mine is not Muslim, all who follow me, and/or interact with me are 100% safe from any level of racism, islamophobia and misogyny. My instance is 100% SAFE for everyone. Please assure her that she is very much  welcome here. This is a good, solid community of people.
@ruby don't join a community that has Americans in it
@ruby @JulieB @hearthborn any suggestions?
@quirkypastor @ruby @hearthborn I'm over at deacon.social. We have a lovely mix of many faiths and don't tolerate unkindness but still have some excellent discussions. Even with my history of verbal abuse, I've never felt safer. But I can also understand it being a bit of a stretch.
@quirkypastor @ruby @JulieB No idea for servers but so far my encounters with like minded people on #mastadon has been decent.

@hearthborn @ruby @JulieB well I looked up the server you’re on and that sounds very safe at least. ❤️

“Mindly.Social is designed to be a positive, inspirational, and educational community with a focus on bettering each other and yourself. This might seem like a pipe dream on the internet but maybe it will work out, who knows right?”

@quirkypastor @ruby @JulieB Yeah, You never know. My experience has been very good as people here are super kind and open minded to discuss differences if any and they’re less judgmental which is perfect. However I do enjoy a healthy debate on faith and religion.
@ruby Exactly. A safe place to call 'home' with plenty of opportunity to 'visit' elsewhere. My heart breaks that she has been made to feel the need for safe shelter. Praying a safe place is found. ❤️

@ruby it would be interesting to see a list (if it is possible to collect) of instances by a religion. Muslims' instance, christians' instance, buddhists' instance, Hare Krishna's instance and so on... And observe the development of their federation. 🤔

Peace to everyone. ✌

@ruby Hey, saw this and am so sad your friend feels like that - I genuinely don't understand how some people can be so evil.

Anyway, in answering your question - I'm not sure about specifically any Muslim servers, but even joining a specifically Muslim-run server might not be a "safer place" since content on servers can also be accessed by other people on other servers.

I guess unless there is a filter set up to make this server its own island etc, it'll be hard to avoid coming across others.

@ruby

->religion

->good

Pick one.

@psydw1nder

  • Fuck off.

  • Get muted.

Pick one.

@ruby

I think there is a definite NEED for such instances. If people think otherwise, they should go ask the folks of #BlackMastodon about their experiences. Harassment on Mastodon exists and folks should become more aware of it -- in order to properly appreciate the qualms and issues of marginalized folks like this person.

The Fediverse should become a more diverse space and with that comes conflict and the need for safe spaces.

@ruby I am struck by how when Black people raised the issue of racism here they were told to start their own instances, and now when Muslim people are looking for a Muslim-specific instance they’re told that’s unnecessary and even inappropriate.

Seems like the common theme is white people insisting that they know what’s best for everyone, instead of actually LISTENING to what people are saying they need or want.

@shawrd773 @ruby Very bizarre to me considering servers are often based on common interests and I absolutely don't see how religion isn't something people would naturally build community around online. I think Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, etc. servers are very natural and kinda obvious

@maddramaqueen @shawrd773

And being Jewish (which I am) or Muslim can also be an ethnicity and a culture. Of course you'd be interested in being on a server with others who share that with you, as well as being safe from the particular type of persecution that is often aimed at your religion, ethnicity, and/or culture.

@ruby If your friend loves anything related to art, you can invite him/her to join the Mastodon.Art instance! Freedom is our first priority, I'm also Muslim and I'm very proud to be one of them.
