Hi there! This is ACM, the world's largest computing society. As you might have noticed, we have opened not only our official #Mastodon account but also our own #instance!

Please consider joining @mastodon.acm.org, a community for #computing researchers & practitioners to connect & exchange ideas with each other, whether you are an ACM member or not.

Mastodon

@ACM invites you to join this server of Mastodon! With an account, you will be able to follow people, post updates and exchange messages with users from any Mastodon server and more!

Mastodon hosted on mastodon.acm.org

@ACM Great to see you on Mastodon. I have been an ACM member since 1984.

I also followed you.

Do you instructions on migrating to you Mastodon server?

@CarlVernet @ACM It depends on whether you want to redirect or move your current profile. See

→ for redirect: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/#redirect
→ for move: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/#move

Read the documentation carefully.

Moving or leaving accounts - Mastodon documentation

Take your information and do what you want with it.

@clausatz @CarlVernet @ACM this goes into a bit more detail, and includes instructions on how to migrate your follows/blocks etc

https://news.mstdn.ca/migrating-your-account-to-mstdn-ca/

Obviously replace mstdn.ca with your new server

@ACM Could you point us to some more information:
What are the posting and content policies for this instance? How are the posting and content policies chosen?
Who will moderate this instance? How are moderators chosen?
What are the federation policies for this instance? How are the federation policies chosen?
@wen @ACM +1 to all of those questions. When choosing an instance, the set of people on the instance matters much less to me than the moderation policy (to encourage a healthy, inclusive community).
@ACM welcome aboard! 👋 followed & boosted 💪
@ACM can I join if I am simply deadly envious of computing researchers and practitioners?
@ACM Would you consider mirroring the SEWORLD (https://www.sigsoft.org/resources/seworld.html) mailing list in this instance? #seworld

@ACM where have you been? I’ve been waiting and waiting…
@ACM I'm new here but I don't think that's the way the Fediverse is intended to work.
@ACM Setting up your own instance! 👍 Very Cool ACM!

@ACM welcome! I used to be a member back in the day and still read the occasional public article.

I'm sure you're busy seeing things up and were planning to get to it, but just in case... the Mastodon link in the https://www.acm.org/ page footers still point to https://noc.social/@TheOfficialACM . Yes, that site _does_ indicate the account has moved, so a diligent user can, with some persistence, verify the authenticity of this account. So you might want to update that link,

or consider adding the Mastodon link to the contact page, https://www.acm.org/about-acm/contact-us . Even better, consider adding the rel="me" attribute to facilitate a verified profile metadata link https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/profile/#verification

@ACM @mstine Thanks for updating that Mastodon footer link.💖

I look forward to spring a green checkmark on your profile in the future.

@ACM Welcome! Seems like y'all would be the ones leading the charge on a protocol like #ActivityPub
@ACM are there any reasons to make an account there even if we just redirect it to our original account
@ACM @dave_andersen As much as I want to recommend this, the #ACM’s track record of running/securing their web presence and related assets is … not great.
@ACM you need to update the mastodon link at the bottom of www.acm.org
@ACM 👏(member since 1982)
@ACM Yay! Very much enjoy the Communications of the ACM. Perhaps you can encourage an article or two about Fediverse / Mastodon in a forthcoming issue!
@ACM that is awesome news!
@ACM I notice that your /about page is really thin on details. No info on moderation re sexism, racism, fascism, etc.; no info on backup policy, etc. :/ Is there any way you could get us that info? Thanks!

@ACM Welcome.

Now please fix your green #OpenAccess policy so that all authors can deposit all versions of their work under a free license like CC BY in any #OpenRepositories without embargos. #RRS for everyone!

Opinion: the cOAlition S Rights Retention Strategy | Plan S

<p>For a long time now, researchers have all too easily handed over to academic publishers the rights inherent in their publications. These rights include not only the intellectual ownership of the researcher’s work, but also the permission to freely and immediately disseminate it without embargoes, and thus allow others to quickly build on these results. @ACM Do we need to be an ACM member to join?
@chadgeidel No requirement for an ACM membership for now.
@ACM This is exactly one of the unique benefits I've been telling people about Mastodon. Since anyone or any organization can create and instance, and links it on their webpage, you get an automatic user validation. Only computing professionals would pay for membership and them they get a validated id on the global town square. It's a win for absolutely everyone except companies and speculators wanting to monetize human community.
@ACM no announcement here about the Turing Award?
