Here's one of the many beautiful things about Mastodon and the Fediverse:

I saw that @johnvoorhees opened a Pixelfed profile. That service is powered by federation too. So here's what I did:

- Took his profile URL: https://pixelfed.social/johnvoorhees
- Changed it to: @[email protected]
- Searched for the account, and followed him.

Now John's photo feed is another account, from a completely different service, that I follow on my Mastodon. I love this.

@viticci @johnvoorhees The iOS app is in beta too. I’m real excited to see an instagram replacement. Really opening up a new world for photographers or an instagram replacement!!!
@anthony @viticci @johnvoorhees And you can also use a Mastodon client! I’m logged in my Pixelfed account in Toot! so switching to a photo feed is just a swipe away.
@viticci this is really cool. So if you were to reply to his post on mastodon, it theoretically would show up as a comment on his Pixelfed post?
@poorlydrawnarsenal Ok cool, you are here!
My wall says "hi". ☺️
@havn amazing! Thanks for sharing!
@viticci It’s great. You can also create a list that includes only the pixelfed profiles, turning list into a mini instagram on mastodon
@viticci @johnvoorhees Wait till you find out about Funkwhale
@viticci Or vice-versa, I follow @oldroadside and @pomological from my #Pixelfed account.
@viticci @johnvoorhees often, the conversion step isn't necessary. You can just paste the URL into the search :)
@viticci @johnvoorhees @[email protected] I’ve got the basic logic for converting URLs to handles, I’ll add a few actions at the beginning to make this work on any link https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/2e3310b6e49946d58efc3e4f99dff48c

This is super cool. I’m jazzed about the possibilities here!

@viticci @johnvoorhees But wait! There’s more....

https://fediverse.party

- Fediverse.Party - explore federated networks

Let's make social media free, federated and fun! Fediverse.Party is your guide into the world of decentralized, autonomous networks running on free open software on a myriad of servers across the world. No ads and no algorithms. Join Fediverse and become part of the new interconnected Web!

@viticci @johnvoorhees Fun fact, you should should just be able to search with the URL most of the time

@johnvoorhees @viticci There’s definitely kinks to work out, but seeing some of this Fediverse stuff in action, knowing developers can just access all of it in the apps they want to build, and seeing how it all interoperates…it can make traditional social media feel like the dark ages!

Soon you’ll be following Tumblr and Wordpress blogs from wherever you want too! ActivityPub almost makes one excited about the future of the ‘net.

@buffaloseven @viticci I agree 100%. There’s a lot of cool stuff that can be done, which makes this all super exciting. ActivityPub above all else has a huge amount of potential

@viticci @johnvoorhees @[email protected] Chris Trotter (@atomicpoet) has been talking about this for a while.

There’s also different blogging platforms, like the one he runs on https://vancity.social. Lots of interesting applications.

@viticci @johnvoorhees @[email protected] Sure that’s all well and good until Mastodon realizes that linking to other social media sites is too dangerous… wait a minute…
@viticci this kind of interoperability is a beautiful thing and I wish it was more common.
@viticci @johnvoorhees you don't even need to rearrange the profile URL. If pixelfed is implementing webfinger properly, searching for the full URL (including the https://) should "just work"
@viticci @johnvoorhees so glad that it’s connecting with you. You are a rare breed – a tech writer that can make complex technology approachable. You’ll be a fantastic advocate for the fediverse.
@viticci @johnvoorhees yes, and it works with various other services as well. For example https://joinmobilizon.org/en/ is a service to create events, meetups. If you follow a handle from there, it will show up in your mastodon timeline if a new event is published by them.
#JoinMobilizon - Let’s take back control of our events

A user-friendly, emancipatory and ethical tool for gathering, organising, and mobilizing.

@viticci @johnvoorhees @[email protected] And works the other way too – I have a Pixelfed account to post and look at photos, and I can follow Mastodon accounts there so I’ve added a couple that just post pictures.
@viticci @johnvoorhees @[email protected] nice! Is it possible to have the same account for both, instead of having 2 separate accounts for mastodon and pixelfed?
@viticci You don't even need to convert the URL. You can paste the URL to his profile in the search box and that should work too.

@viticci @johnvoorhees @[email protected] I just tried this (posted a photo on my Pixelfed account), but the post that showed up in my timeline on Mastodon doesn't show the actual photo. 🤔 On the web, it shows "Not available", but links to the direct URL. In Mastodon iOS, it just doesn't show any photo. In @tootapp, it's similar to the web. In Mammoth, it's just blank and does not link to the photo.

Am I doing something wrong here?

@viticci @johnvoorhees
I *thought* that was how it was supposed to work... but when I tried this trick on someone else before it didn't.. Just tried the same again with John and still returns nothing. I wonder if this something to do with my tiny instance not federating/knowing about pixelfed yet?
@ivor @viticci @johnvoorhees I'm having the same problem. Hoping someone replies to us with a setting to tweak because I could see my issue being the result of self-hosting my instance.
@andrew @viticci @johnvoorhees I'm wondering if it's a timing/sync issue. I can find and follow other pixelfed accounts. I can't see how you can force your instance to refresh it's directory, I'll dive back into the manual.
@andrew @viticci @johnvoorhees
searched again now and he does pop up, so must be an update timing issue... albeit would be good to know *how* and *when* etc this happens.
@ivor @viticci @johnvoorhees
Working for me as well now. Thanks!
@ivor @viticci @johnvoorhees
Hopefully now that I am connected to one Pixelfed account my instance will search for others more reliably.
@viticci @johnvoorhees @[email protected] That's awesome, but somehow I'm unable to follow my own pixelfed.social account from mastodon, do you know if there is some setting to enable to be able to do this?
@vchicor0d @viticci @johnvoorhees Yeah, I'm having the same problem. Have tried it on iOS and in browser on Mac.

@viticci What's your impression of the desert island? 😄

@johnvoorhees

@viticci @johnvoorhees so how does.one do that? Create a Mastodon name for a Pixelfed account?
@viticci @johnvoorhees @[email protected] love watching smart people be smart. What a neat feature to find

@viticci @johnvoorhees @[email protected]

how does one know to do this? is there any way to just make it happen? I just want to follow people and see their posts.

If I understand it right, this is the power of a protocol-based approach?

@viticci Aw yeah, the Fediverse is great. 🙂

In the future: you probably didn't have to change the profile URL into a handle format. Typically you can just search for the profile URL, and it will work just the same.

@viticci @johnvoorhees @[email protected] this is absolutely the future of social media

@viticci @johnvoorhees @[email protected]

I'm confused (as a new Mastodon user): When I click through @[email protected], to view his profile, it shows 0 followers and 0 following. That's the case in the image you posted as well.

@viticci @johnvoorhees you don't even need to change it, you can just paste the url in the search box
@viticci @johnvoorhees just followed him. Are you on there too?

@viticci

Fun fact: that first step is probably optional. You can search directly for the URL; you don't need to change it to the user address.

So like if you put https://pixelfed.social/johnvoorhees in the search bar, that should work too. This also works for posts.

pixelfed
@viticci so like if you search for https://pixelfed.social/p/johnvoorhees/510072466585465873 it will directly bring up the post from within Mastodon.

@viticci @johnvoorhees @[email protected] The same thing can be done on #Bookwyrm servers. Here's my Bookwyrm account: @[email protected]
@viticci @johnvoorhees @[email protected] This is just another part of what makes the 'fediverse' and ActivityPub so great!
