Mastodon has cracked the top ten social networking apps in the App Store. For context, Signal is at 15.
@sandofsky It is lagging today. Growing pains.
@sandofsky It would be fun to see how that list evolves over time
@sandofsky And the weird thing is, it's not a very good app … yet. I mean, it does work.
@pmcg @sandofsky it’s a terrible app! I wish all the new users understood that they have much better options.
@IPEdmonton @pmcg @sandofsky One of the first thing I tell new people is to get another app, and give them suggestions based on their OS. People are missing out on so much if they only use the base app!
@stopthatgirl7 @IPEdmonton @pmcg @sandofsky can you explain more?? I am currently using the main/official app and feel like maybe I'm missing out? I'm on Android...
@alexanderama @stopthatgirl7 @IPEdmonton @pmcg @sandofsky I really liked the #Tusky UI, it just seemed more readable. The big feature advantages are: supporting bookmarks, and multiple account logins. I then found #YuitoApp for #Android (it's a fork of Tusky) and that's even cleaner and easier to use for me. Maybe because it's fairly Twitter-like, but mostly it's just easy to navigate and makes Mastodon feel more frictionless
@alexanderama @UberAirQuality @stopthatgirl7 @IPEdmonton @sandofsky for iOS and Macintosh, the developers of #TweetBot are working hard on @ivory … but likely not available for another month, at best pace.
@alexanderama
Check out Tusky (free) and Fedilab (inexpensive). Both are much better options. I used/compared both of the above and now only use Fedilab. These two are fairly identical as far as functionality, but I just like the Fedilab ux a bit more.
@stopthatgirl7 @IPEdmonton @pmcg @sandofsky
@pinchera @alexanderama @stopthatgirl7 @IPEdmonton @sandofsky and indeed the excellent bird clients are being converted, but it is not an instant process, in fact it's complex. But it is happening! And I hope the so-called official client is gonna improve also.
@pmcg
As long as users are aware of their options, it doesn't particularly matter if the official app improves. For YEARS, the official bird app was horrible on Android, compared to third-party offerings.
@alexanderama @stopthatgirl7 @IPEdmonton @sandofsky
@sandofsky @IPEdmonton @pmcg oh, it’s not terrible. I used it for a while before researching and finding MetaText. I found it adequate!
@basexperience @sandofsky @pmcg metatext is good but isn’t being updated anymore. So you’ll want to keep looking (but you’ll have a reasonably pretty app in the meantime).
@sandofsky @IPEdmonton @pmcg really? I thought toot was the one not being updated!
@basexperience @sandofsky @pmcg I don’t know about that (there might very well be more than one), but Metatext is definitely no longer being updated.
@pmcg @IPEdmonton @sandofsky new iPhone version 1.7.1 3w ago, seems recent enough to me?
@basexperience @pmcg @sandofsky Yep, he just stopped (and announced it). So there’s no edit function in Metatext, for example. And anything new that gets added from now on won’t be included.
@IPEdmonton @pmcg @sandofsky this has been true for almost all the platforms though. How the official Reddit app is even on that list is a testament to the general users low expectations and acceptance of what they're fed.
@ticktok I didn't even know there WAS a Reddit app. 😆
@IPEdmonton @pmcg @sandofsky I actually really like it. I use this and Toot! - used Amaroq before but that just kept on crashing when I returned a few months ago, so I eventually gave up on it. Which one would you recommend? I’ve heard good and bad things about Metatext but haven’t tried it. The official app and Toot! received a lot of decent updates during the last few weeks. Toot! lets me check different instance feeds, which is useful for topic-focused instances.
@jashan @pmcg @sandofsky I like Metatext but it isn't being updated anymore, so newer features aren't available in it (and that will only get worse over time). I am alternating right now between #Mastoot and #Mammoth. Both are still in development (Mammoth is still in beta), but the developers are really keen and keep adding/fixing things every day. The apps are very different from each other but I like both.
@techtobi @jashan @sandofsky @pmcg it’s no longer being updated because the developer is ill. Is that “dead”? Not really, you can still use it! It just won’t ever have any more features than it does now.
@IPEdmonton @techtobi @jashan @sandofsky @pmcg To be fair as a free software project someone else could start maintaining a fork, hell with how frequently I've heard Metatext spoken of highly I'd be shocked if there isn't an effort to keep it going one way or another. Hell the specific bugtracker software I personally love has a living fork since the largely one-man upstream mostly called it quits a few years ago! And I'm writing from an Android app abandoned by its creator several times ;)
@keithzg @jashan @pmcg @sandofsky @techtobi He offered that! I guess if there were any takers, we’ll know soon enough.
@IPEdmonton @jashan @sandofsky @pmcg thanks for information, i was wondering why no editing-feature was implemented. Didnt know developer is ill. Hope he will get well soon.
@IPEdmonton @pmcg @sandofsky The official Mastodon app is pretty much the only good client I've seen imo
@pmcg @sandofsky that’s the thing. I use #metatext and #mammoth more than the official app. I have all 3 on my phone but I prefer the UI of the other 2
@NomadicNerd @sandofsky I haven't used iOS apps much, but at the least it does do push notifications. (when you tap on them it does *not* link back into the context, which it ought to do … oh well)
@pmcg @sandofsky I have all my notifications off until one of the apps has the ability to mute or leave conversations lol
@sandofsky it has since moved to number 9 in social networking on apple’s App Store. 😮
@sandofsky MetaText on iOS is working for me, Tootle was ok
@sandofsky No wonder the rocket man is acting scared.
@sandofsky Well, Elon got something right on Twitter. His tweets are causing Mastadon to surge in popularity.
@sandofsky what's the ranking for truth social?
@sandofsky making John Mastodon proud!
@sandofsky Its probably region based. Mine shows at 96.
@sandofsky Just looked. It is #7 now
@sandofsky toot had better reviews so I went with it. Not sure if it is available for iphone.
@sandofsky
I'd say toot! makes it official.
@sandofsky BTW the 'Toot' app is also worth checking out.
@sandofsky I’m liking the @mastadon.social experience so far. Post.News better develop their app for download soon or they’re going to get left in the dust behind the others.
@sandofsky to be fair, I don't know anyone who would consider Signal a social media app. More like the app coup plotters talk about taking their insurrection plans to when they start to get paranoid.
@sandofsky where it BELONGS. Lets go.
@sandofsky its like someone heard that this app using the word Toot was really popular and has a purple icon and an M logo just had to compete with a purple W logo and a dirty name
