Mastodon has cracked the top ten social networking apps in the App Store. For context, Signal is at 15.
@sandofsky And the weird thing is, it's not a very good app … yet. I mean, it does work.
@pmcg @sandofsky it’s a terrible app! I wish all the new users understood that they have much better options.
@IPEdmonton @pmcg @sandofsky I actually really like it. I use this and Toot! - used Amaroq before but that just kept on crashing when I returned a few months ago, so I eventually gave up on it. Which one would you recommend? I’ve heard good and bad things about Metatext but haven’t tried it. The official app and Toot! received a lot of decent updates during the last few weeks. Toot! lets me check different instance feeds, which is useful for topic-focused instances.
@jashan @pmcg @sandofsky I like Metatext but it isn't being updated anymore, so newer features aren't available in it (and that will only get worse over time). I am alternating right now between #Mastoot and #Mammoth. Both are still in development (Mammoth is still in beta), but the developers are really keen and keep adding/fixing things every day. The apps are very different from each other but I like both.
@techtobi @jashan @sandofsky @pmcg it’s no longer being updated because the developer is ill. Is that “dead”? Not really, you can still use it! It just won’t ever have any more features than it does now.
@IPEdmonton @techtobi @jashan @sandofsky @pmcg To be fair as a free software project someone else could start maintaining a fork, hell with how frequently I've heard Metatext spoken of highly I'd be shocked if there isn't an effort to keep it going one way or another. Hell the specific bugtracker software I personally love has a living fork since the largely one-man upstream mostly called it quits a few years ago! And I'm writing from an Android app abandoned by its creator several times ;)
@keithzg @jashan @pmcg @sandofsky @techtobi He offered that! I guess if there were any takers, we’ll know soon enough.
