When leaving a party, I learned a trick from a friend.

Rather than starting the painful process of saying goodbye to everyone, or having to wait for the herd to thin out, you just casually stroll out.

If anyone asks you say “I am going to the car to get a sweater”

@Migueldeicaza I always heard of this as an "Irish goodbye". Which is apparently also called a "French leave".

I'm happy to know party-goers have been studying the technique for centuries.

@eatonphil @Migueldeicaza I love how on the continent it's the "English exit". Everyone pins the practice they consider rude on their favourite nation 😉
@eatonphil @Migueldeicaza In Spain the name is «French style Goodbye» :-)
@Migueldeicaza I just don't say goodbye to everyone. I say goodbye to the host(s), then throw a general "goodbye!" to anyone paying attention. Then I leave.
What does the phrase an Irish Goodbye mean?

Are you sick of hanging around at a celebration after you're ready to go home and have to say goodbye to everyone present? Then you need to know about "the Irish goodbye." The origins of the Irish Goodbye, where guests at a public event abruptly leave without saying goodbye, are lost to history.

@iain this is beautiful
Whoa! It seems so similar to the customs of southern Italy.
@andrea da napoletana ho sempre trovato gli Irlandesi i napoletani d’Europa, almeno fino a quando li frequentavo con una certa costanza 20 anni fa (Dublino è molto cambiata)
@iain @Migueldeicaza I think the article misses an additional benefit—and why the Irish goodbye is more considerate—which is that it prevents you from inadvertently starting a mass exodus from the party.
@iain @Migueldeicaza Lol. Reminded me of my grandma! Thank you
@Migueldeicaza "saída à francesa" as we call down here
@edcrypt god I love that there is a name for this
@edcrypt @Migueldeicaza Despedirse a la francesa en España también 👋🇫🇷
@Migueldeicaza what if it's summer 😁?

@lefteris @Migueldeicaza

In that case, it's "I need to return some videotapes.".

@lefteris “getting more beers from the car”?

@Migueldeicaza @lefteris

I misread this as "bees" and it was so much better.

@Migueldeicaza Good luck trying that in the Midwest. https://youtu.be/MHCmE4ABnNs

@Migueldeicaza Around here we call this "the French exit". I have no idea why that is but the term is known :)
@Migueldeicaza introvert lifestyle…great superpower
@Migueldeicaza I like this, it will simply add to my mystique...
@Migueldeicaza I left Twitter to get a sweater.
@Migueldeicaza This is what I do when introvert me needs to recover.

@Migueldeicaza

Also known as Irish Goodbye.
My favourite. It doesn't work if you are there with your partner.

@Migueldeicaza in ninja way “smoke bomb” 🥷

@Migueldeicaza I learned it as "Other people leave the party and don't say goodbye, but we Jews keep saying goodbye and never leave the party."

@Migueldeicaza Irish exit. Irish goodbye.

If you are a woman...carry a clutch purse and no coat. This gets tricky in winter.

If it is at a bar...never leave a tab going, pay for each drink. When you get up to go...leave half of the drink on bar cuz there is an expectation you will come back to finish it.

Know your exits....use the one closest to the bathroom. Easy exit.

If you are in the Midwest. May the odds be ever in your favor.

@Migueldeicaza The Irish Goodbye is a classic, but I prefer the Tokyo Sayonara which is where you leave and only say goodbye to the cat 🐈 (or for me, the dog)
@Migueldeicaza I was going to do this at a party this weekend, but my coat was under a pile of jackets that I had to root through to find. Kinda drew some attention. :)
@mcloveday @Migueldeicaza that's what you get for being early 😂
@simSalabim @Migueldeicaza so true. The 'plan' was to get there early so I could leave after an hour or so. Two hours later ...
@Migueldeicaza I simply say "Goodbye people, see you later" and do a general wave to everybody🤷‍♂️
