Today, on December 17th we remember such momentous occasions on the web such as the first usage of the word #Weblog and the release of #CSS, both in fact, 25 years old today.

We recognize the tireless work of the #w3c in its momentous undertaking to develop protocols and standards that encourage cooperation, of which #ActivityPub is another result and reminder of their hard work and without which #Mastodon would not be possible.

Today it does not matter if you are using #Mastodon or #Pleroma or #Pixelfed or #Friendica or one of the many other projects in the #Fediverse family.

For those who have the means and ability to do so, I would invite you to contribute your money, your time, your boosts and above all your gratitude for the following causes:

- your instance owners, for their hard work in keeping this space running

- one of the many open source projects in which #Mastodon is just one in a many long line of

- your favorite artists, musicians, and writers who enrich our timelines on a daily basis -

- and especially and perhaps most importantly, those you know on the #Fediverse and off, who may be from marginalized communities, disabled, or otherwise having a difficult time this holiday season.

If you know of a worthy recipient of such a contribution, I gladly welcome you to share them in reply to this thread, tag them with relevant tags, and invite you to boost liberally.

IN the spirit of #JohnMastodon and the reminder that sometimes we all just need to run with a meme and just laugh and be joyful and creative together, regardless of what our background is..... I propose a toot, I mean toast... to YOU the good people of the #Fediverse.

Have a happy holiday season no matter what you celebrate, or a joyous day should you not celebrate any holiday this time of year at all.

Now, get out there and boost this toot. 😂

@nikkiana

Well First U get a Boost
But
ME is dying to *know* HOW U implemented a
*READ MORE* button with additional content to this post???
🤔
ME has to be able to do this too!

@kahyrn Well, the short answer is you've just got to write a bunch and #Mastodon will do it automatically.

I don't believe there's anything you can do manually to trigger it.

But, in case you're curious, here's how it works...

First, you need to be on an instance that allows for a long enough character limit to be long-winded in the first place.

The default, I believe, is 500 characters.... but I happen to be on an instance that allows for 2000 characters.

Then you write a long post, like what I did.

What #Mastodon's code is set to do is display posts at a certain height, and when they get taller than that height, it triggers some code that adds that "read more" button.

When you click "read more" button, it sends you to the page where the post lives, and everything expands.

Hope that helps!

@nikkiana

Hmmm...*instance*? 🤔

This part "I happen to be on an instance that allows for 2000 characters"

ME is for sure dat Techno-Dweeb & lost in the language of Geeks

Long (like really LONG) ago ME knew HTML for changing personal site template aspects...

But this is maybe above ME cureent paygrade in Geekery!

ME will check into that.

@kahyrn You might hear some folks call it an instance, or some people call it a server..... It's just the website you're using to connect to the network.

You're on masto.ai.

I'm on social.yesterweb.org.

Your character limit count should show up in the corner of the little text box where you make your posts. :)

@nikkiana

Yes ME can see that character *count*

But as to choosing website...ME was having trouble when ME signed up with name...so me just typed in Masto dot ai

Voila!

ME is here

But ME has zero idea why or how ME was supposed to sign up or pick a *website* for this "instance"

Can ME change that?

I'm going to put a big Diolch o galon / thanks a million to @jaz and the team at toot.wales for creating, maintaining and encouraging such a wonderful community. It's been a pleasure to be part of it these past 6 weeks or so, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it develops.
