The speedrun through "every trust and safety problem others have experienced over the last decade but that I don't know anything about" continues.

Up next, adversarial reporting.

@adamshostack @alex a collective NOPE by anyone who knows anything at all about the subject, I guess
@alex Probably a feature for him, not a bug. To really affect the algorithm you'd need a lot of accounts, and that's revenue for him. If adversarial reporting turns into a war, the only arms merchant profits.
@szhang_ds True, if you throw away every metric other than "how much were the libs owned?" then a lot of pathologies other companies wrestled with become features.

@alex

I'm wondering how much these days there's a business argument for essentially being biased as a social media owner.

In that no matter what, large-network social media moderation tends to result in criticism - regardless of fairness, transparency efforts, etc. If you're visibly biased, you effectively negate most complaints from half of the users, at the cost of strongly alienating the other half.

@szhang_ds @alex but the alt right trolls have been bored at Truth Social and they will get bored at Eloy Club. They only like to stalk and fight. He is taking away their prey. This is a death spiral.
@stevenbodzin @szhang_ds @alex they will love this change now, not understanding what it leads to
@szhang_ds @alex not totally right.
Reading the comments, there are APIs that allow you to automatically block accounts in a provided list.
This means the job is way easier, imho.
@alex Shush. All we can do now is sit back, grab some popcorn, and let it happen.
@alex
Somehow I think there must be a connection between Musk’s interest in brain implants and Twitter’s constantly evolving ToS.
@alex when it all goes bad, a judge should tattoo Dunning-Kruger on his forehead.

@alex

The trolls and bots will destroy any usefulness that remains. It is over.

@alex

If there wasn't enough reasons to block twitter blue people before... Cant block or mute what you cant see.

@alex This could backfire heavily... if only everyone who bought a blue check mark to keep their reach blocked Musk... >:3

@alex

He has a solution for abuse of this system!

@CreepPhone @alex Raise your hands if you think Musk would actually take away that brigades reason for spending $8 on Twitter.

No hands? Good. That means you're sentient.

@alex It’s very pay to play. But then what else would you expect from a billionaire. He think’s everything can be bought so he’ll keep fucking around and finding out.

@alex
As many have noted, this is going to have terrible effects (some of them probably desired by Musk).

Most people buying blue checkmarks are Elon's deplorable alt-right fanboys, so the people getting downvoted into invisibility will be the sort they don't like.

And then there will be organized silencing campaigns with mass reporting by armies of $8 bots.

The only defense will be for decent people to block each and every purchased blue checkmark. What they can't see, they can't downvote.

@alex eventually the magas and Q’s will have nobody except each other to argue with.
@alex I’d agree except I don’t think he’s trying to understand how to make it governable as much as he wants to constantly prop up the idea that he is. He wants a platform which supports what he wants and banishes what he does not. The lie is that there will be rules.
@alex brownsh- I mean blueshirts
@alex Where's his level now? pseudo-Slashdot, pre-Reddit ~arounds?
Hey Elon: Let Me Help You Speed Run The Content Moderation Learning Curve

It’s kind of a rite of passage for any new social media network. They show up, insist that they’re the “platform for free speech” without quite understanding what that actua…

@alex I was just about to post the exact same thought

@alex haha. Aside from the obvious bullshit involved in this, there is also the implication of legacy blue people being explicitly known to be trustworthy, while the new blue are a potential filter of unknown quality. Guy really doesn't understand how trust works.

@alex

He's fucking the platform up so effectively I can hardly believe it's not on purpose!

@alex It's only silencing a candidate so your guy can win an election, Michael. What's that got to cost, $8?

In reality, for less than 10M, a foreign country could use this to completely erase a Presidential candidate they don't like.

And Musky is so desperate for money that he wouldn't care if they were bots or not.

@alex He seems determined to fail his way through other people’s failures. Reminds me of this article https://www.iqsdirectory.com/resources/teslas-big-problem-excessive-automation/

@alex So amazing. It's like a car wreck you can't look away from, but just like a car wreck it has real consequences.
