When I Bookmark something, it's just for me.

When I Like something, it's just for me and the person who made the post.

When I boost something, it's because I want to share it with others.

There's no software in the background recording and evaluating my behavior so it can decide the best ads to show me, and what I should see or not see in my feed to increase my engagement.

It's pretty nice not being the product anymore and just enjoying the web again.

#Mastodon & #TwitterMigration FTW

@jon Thanks for the sherpa(ing), Jon.
@jon is a “boost” different from a “reblog”?
@darrenshaw they are one in the same.
@jon thanks for the quick info…. Just fetching up on this. Though I was told my dms/etc are only as private as the person running the server?

@Jakebohall glad that was helpful.

DMs don't have end-to-end encryption (yet). They are also, technically, posts with visibility set to specific individuals. So if you want a truly private conversation, I recommend you stick with something like Signal (which I use). "DMs" are still private here, but not where you would share sensitive information. Meaning, I doubt you need to worry about someone snooping in on your conversations, but at the same time, they're not encrypted.

@jon Agree. It's awesome. Being able to discover personal blogs again - and verification showing ownership and verifying that a real human is behind an account - is a bonus.

Are you running a notion theme or is that actually notion on your personal blog?

@theinstantwin I'm running WordPress and that's a custom theme I made.
@jon it’s super clean/useful. Fantastic work on that.
@jon that feeling of not fighting an algorithm or corporate surveillance.

@jon I agree that other sites use the data for monetizing your personal information, while also steering users towards possibly interesting content.

There’s no law of physics, or even sociology or economics, that requires the monetization. It’s entirely possible to have that information, maybe with an auto-expire, to allow algorithms to find related content that might be of interest to the user.

I’d be in favor of that.

@jon

I'm honestly amazed at how many Twitter folks didn't treat it that way - I got in that mindset in its early days, and never....really...changed.

It wasn't til I got here that I realized that this approach was brand new for so many.

@jon
This is so good! I meet lots of people who are as clueless as i was a few weeks ago. I try to help them, 'cause that's what we do. And i don't fear being made fun of. Planet M is liberating and downright lovely!
So I have bookmarked this for the future. Oh, your posts are amazing!
Much gratitude.
@jon You think so? You need to limit your followership to personally verified people, otherwise you'll get bots analysing your posts, sooner or later. Where there is relevance, there's money.
@jon not “product”. We’re unpaid workers under this model. Or worse “fuel”
@jon great post and helps give me hope that we have reclaimed a bit of the internet from corporate takeover
@jon thank you! I did not realise there was a bookmark feature.
@jon yes👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@jon Bookmarking might be great if only I knew how to access those bookmarks. Oy, I love Mastodon but it has a long learning curve. #bookmark
@jon going from the consumer to the product was an eye opening experience and horrifying.
@jon Great way to think about it!
@jon Totally agree, it’s been a refreshing return to the early days of personal publishing.
@jon Bookmarked for later sharing. 😃
@jon that's a good way to think about what the three icons do though! 👀
@jon it has a lovely, "back to basics" vibe about it. Uncluttered, focused and pure.
@jon When someone posts a poll on Mastodon, I always give my opinion -- something I would never do on any other SM site -- because it's fun and I know it's not being used to target me. What a breath of fresh air!
