Based on https://globe.adsbexchange.com/?icao=a835af&lat=34.178&lon=-119.169&zoom=9.5&showTrace=2022-12-13&timestamp=1670902710, Elon's jet has a PIA hex code (which obfuscates its identity) but was using its tail number (which reveals its identity) for a call sign? Am I misreading this?
ADS-B Exchange - track aircraft live

ADS-B Exchange - track aircraft live - aircraft flight history

In that case the argument that non-public data was required to track its flight (in this case, at least) is just patently untrue?
Is this all just ludicrously stupid?
It's been pointed out that I did misread, but in the funnier direction. It wasn't using a PIA hex code (you can look up N628TS on https://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/Search/NNumberInquiry), so literally no identity obfuscation.

@mjg59 I thought it was only after he banned ElonJet that he applied for PIA
@mjg59 I suddenly have an interest in SDR and ADS-B tracking...

@arclight may I recommend FlightAware's Pi Aware tracker kit?

I've been using one for years (originally in an area with problematic low overflights in dangerous airspace).

@arclight @mjg59
Do it! It's easy to set up and you can get a surprising amount of coverage with even a shit antenna -- and even better with a $75 investment or so!
@mjg59 even if he was using a PIA, any airport you’ve heard of has a local plane spotting community of people with cameras and telephoto lenses. They’ve been doing this longer than the modern crowdsourced ADS-B communities. Combine those datasets and it is very hard to be hidden in the skies unless someone is using a rotating series of rental jets
@sigmafactor @mjg59 Or just a jet card, like you know, most rich people do.
@coregaze @mjg59
He’s definitely a dumb guy’s idea of a smart guy, and also very dumb himself
@sigmafactor @mjg59 I mean, honestly, I can see the attraction of taking private flights, even if just to avoid COVID exposure. buuuuuuut, if I was going to do it I'd absolutely use NetJet or whatever rather than buying the damn plane myself. Jet planes are propelled by burning huge amounts of money, which reduces the money pressure in front of the plane causing it to move forwards.

@mjg59 this Mastodon thread explains a bit more how PIA are used and some drawbacks: https://jawns.club/@airplaneian/109521394788074302

ADSB exchange already links the various known PIA (temporary ICAO hex address) to their tail number

Since flight tracking has all of a sudden become extremely popular, let's talk about how to look up "blocked" airplanes' live and historical data on the internet. It's easy! Thread (my first on mastodon so apologies in advance if I mess something up!)

@mjg59 I did absolutely nothing, and I'm all out of ideas!
