Not sure what to make of this bit of nonsense. (Also, that's not how you spell her name, but whatever)

Heh. To everyone responding to this telling me it's about the Streisand Effect... yes, I know.

The reason I'm "not sure what to make of it" is because I came up with the term "The Streisand Effect" and feel weird seeing Elon use it in this manner....

@mmasnick It sounds a lot like somebody mentioned it to him and he didn't understand.

@mmasnick I was thinking your thread was the funniest thing I've seen tonight ๐Ÿ˜…

Edit, how do you feel about me bookmarking this post when I need to give an example of what mansplaining is? (not you, them) ๐Ÿ˜…

@mmasnick incredible woosh responses in your mentions right now

@mmasnick I was just telling this story to my brother! But I got the origin of the phrase wrong because my drug-addled memory told me it came from the "Mecha-Streisand" South Park episode.

Good times.

@mmasnick Itโ€™s like someone explaining Godwinโ€™s Law to @MikeGodwin
@mmasnick greatest flex in the history of flexes ๐Ÿ‘
@mmasnick wow, you are a legend amongst law firm associates who have asked why we are not going to indulge the clientsโ€™ desire to pay us $$$ to churn out defamation threats and we didnโ€™t even know it was you.
@jelasher that was literally the point of coining it... to stop those silly threats.
@mmasnick I had a high profile (securities lit client) CEO freak out and ask our firm to sue folks who made a gross parody of his name. I was jazzed to draft my first cease and desist letter until the partner on our team told me to Google the Streisand effect and get back to him.
@jelasher i should have licensed it to BigLaw.
@mmasnick Coulda/woulda/shoulda. Still plenty of time to TM ::gesticulates energetically in the general direction of the chaos at Twitter:: โ€ฆMuskatastrophe? โ€œFTX wasnโ€™t just your ordinary train-wreck, it was a real Muskatastrophe.โ€
@mmasnick heโ€™s saying he doesnโ€™t give a shit about attracting attention to the people heโ€™s banning. Heโ€™s bragging about his hypocrisy.
@mmasnick the thing he doesn't seem to understand is that once there's nothing left to burn, the people all standing around watching the fire will leave.

@mmasnick

It must be the same feeling of chemists who seriously worked on a compound for hypertensionโ€ฆ and their marketing department took it and named it "Viagra".

Sildenafil - Wikipedia

@mmasnick he almost always writes in riddles or 8th grade humor, hence 420, 69, etcโ€ฆ.
@mmasnick I remembered I learned it from you. I didn't remember that you coined it! Sorry!
@mmasnick Now I know what the Streisand Effect is! Thank you for coining such a lovely term #etymology
@mmasnick He's doing a "Woe is Me" gaslighting. Hammering the lie that it's all about doxxing when it's misdirection to the press being mean to him.
@mmasnick there should be a name for when people on the internet explain to you something that you actually created. (Usually poorly.)
@anildash @mmasnick look I think people should get credit even if they did create a thing poorly
@anildash @mmasnick since Elmo is a muppet, we might as well call it โ€The Muppet Effectโ€ ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
@anildash @mmasnick I guess a lot more people are now aware of the Streisand Effect. Is there a term for that?
@anildash @mmasnick welcome to the world of Blavk women ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ
@anildash @mmasnick You mean, something like "mansplaining"? ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‚
@anildash @mmasnick I think we should call it the "Anil Dash" effect. There will be just enough ambiguity as to whether Anil was explaining or being explained to, and it will drive him redโ€ฆ
@anildash @mmasnick Would โ€œanthrosplainingโ€ be a gender-neutral term?
@anildash @mmasnick if you come up with one, Iโ€™m sure Godwin would also be on board.
@anildash @mmasnick When somebody who is a fan of a thing that you created, and they explain it to you as if you don't know what it is, that's called "fansplaining."
@waldoj @anildash @mmasnick What a great term! What makes it even better is that it actually happens to rhyme with another uncomfortable-explainer word: "mansplaining"
@waldoj @anildash @mmasnick That reminds me, Iโ€™ll have to ask @cwebber if she ever got to the bottom of her search for the true meaning of ActivityPub

@anildash @mmasnick

This seems like an area where women in STEM fields should have 'Dibs' on the naming rights.... ๐Ÿ˜‰

@ForiamCJ @anildash Can I explain why to you first? ๐Ÿ˜‰

@mmasnick @anildash

I saw the other part of the conversation ("what happened that led up to this thread")

But I figured the "go to" resources for naming convention, should be those who have the most "life experience" walking in those footsteps. ,

@ForiamCJ @anildash I am in complete agreement... I did like "The Stanton Effect" idea after this:

@mmasnick @anildash

Excellent example ๐Ÿ™‚

I would definitely vote for that one

@mmasnick I guess he means he ... really wants people to know he has a private jet? *shrug*
@mmasnick hey! I didnโ€™t realize you counted the term. Def feeling a little (but not a lot) starstruck. Funny how all that works.
@mmasnick okay, this is a but embarrassing but I canโ€™t delete it at the moment bc the mastodon app wonโ€™t let me, but what the heck. That is how I felt.
@Jason haha. please don't.
@mmasnick gosh, and this is exactly why I shouldn't Mastodon at a party. ๐Ÿ™ˆ Thanks for being gracious haha.
