If I hear anyone else ask me if I’m going to “watch the match”, I’m going to lose it. No, I won’t watch that extremely boring snooze fest of a sport played by overpaid divas in a terrible country, organized by the most corrupt organization on earth, even if it supposedly “brings people together”.

Because it doesn’t. It divides people, and it won’t change anyone’s life for the better, ever. Football is crap.

@thelinuxEXP same for hockey too really
@aks Basically any sport that has heavy media coverage
@thelinuxEXP an apt point! Media-covered sport tournaments are just a clownry for bored fans.
@thelinuxEXP Everytime someone asks you about football, just reply with. "Yeah, balls, am I right? Big ones."

@thelinuxEXP Computers are a bit crap too, especially when used to make lofty judgments about millions of peoples tastes.

Not a fan of Qatar, but football is the glue that keeps many peoples lives together, rich and poor alike.

@blabberlicious It’s not a glue for anything. It divides people into camps, teams, countries. Once it’s over, it has 0 impact on anyone’s lives. It’s an illusion, and I wish people stopped selling it as something magical that brings people together. If that was true, the world wouldn’t be this shitty.

@thelinuxEXP As you like. We all live illusory lives, in some ways. You could say the exact same thing about the pointlessness of art, literature, and throwing random shade on peoples enjoyment of something you don't like.

I'm off to watch the match with my friends. Cheerio!

@blabberlicious Also, my opinion isn’t a judgement, and I didn’t use a computer to write it ;)

@thelinuxEXP I'd rather suck at actually playing the sport rather than watching the world cup, I don't agree with how FIFA does things, everything is about money, not the sport.

So I'd say FIFA is crap but not the sport itself

@lopeztel Yeah, I should have been clearer: playing football is fun. Watching it and engaging in all that manufactured hype is dumb!
@thelinuxEXP a flock of idiots chasing a ball.
@thelinuxEXP France will lose anyway, booo!
@paninodesu I couldn’t care less, I’m not playing, so why should I? 😂

@thelinuxEXP I can't believe you responded me with a "classic futebol opinion".

Just for the record, I don't follow futebol actually, I don't watch it. Even when it's my country team I rarely cares.
But people watch the World Cup for a reason, for example, today I could see YOUR time play. That's what the most fun about the World Cup, see all those other countries playing, know a bit more about them and having fun.

@paninodesu but it’s not MY team. It’s a bunch of people I have 0 connection with. I don’t know them, I’m not a part of their team, the only thing we have in common is that they were born in the same country as me. I don’t see why I should be excited for that!
@thelinuxEXP I am as well not super interested, but my son is talking constantly about it with his friends and they all like playing. He has a double nationality French/German and we live in Germany. It is interesting to see how the kids react to who wins or loose. For instance, they are happy for the French team because they know my son independently of the fact they are all Germans.
I won’t watch it but I won’t block him watching it when it is at a reasonable time for a 7yo
@clempat yeah, I have nothing against people who like it, my issue is with the notion that everyone should be interested in this, it’s assumed that you like football, and that you agree that it’s some kind of social link between people, when it’s clearly not!

@thelinuxEXP yeah I understand what you mean, I always preferred watching rugby 🏉.

What I dislike about sports is that they can be as corrupted as politics.

@thelinuxEXP

So who are you rooting for?

Just kidding football is really quite dull (to me at least)

@mrbobs I’m rooting for the whole thing to be canceled because of all the corruption 😂
@thelinuxEXP Nothing brings us closer together like slave labor!
@Lukako BuT dOn’T bRiNg PoLiTiCs iNtO sPoRtS!
Yeah, like it was ever NOT politically used to hide other issues 😅

@thelinuxEXP I understand being annoyed by all the people asking you about football (must be a lot in France, you can imagine it's even bigger in Brazil where I live)

But really on an individual level sports in general have a great impact in people's lives. Even for myself, football has always been the best way to make me come out of my shell and be able to socialize a bit as a kid (which now I know was autistic)

Generalizing based on just the bad parts only hurts the good ones

@fantinel Playing football, sure! Watching it? Not so much!

@thelinuxEXP I actually meant watching it, not playing it. The feeling of belonging plus the connections made around the sport really help! It connects people of all kinds and for me it meant being able to fit in at school/work and not being the "weird kid". Other hobbies could work, sure, but they weren't universal

It sucks that rotten people paint such a bad image of the sport but I think it's easier to change it when we acknowledge what's good vs just discarding it as a whole

@fantinel To me it always felt like you HAD to fake interest to belong, which made making connections worse. Relationships felt fake. And people literally fought all the time about which team was better or not, if theirs lost, they got losses and violent… I never saw any good side to football, only people acting stupidly over something that didn’t matter at all.
@thelinuxEXP @fantinel same here. I live football and f1 as sport that I can or want to play, but watching is boring.
@thelinuxEXP This is literally the first time I've *ever* seen evidence of Europeans disliking watching the dominant sport! I kinda thought it was only US nerds who hated watching football...
@Beerbruin Nah there are a few of us that haven’t been brainwashed !
@thelinuxEXP I'm ice hockey fan, Nick. I'm not interested in football anymore.
@thelinuxEXP I have about the same opinion, but about the other football. ;)
@benjaminhollon @thelinuxEXP For many years I hosted an alternative social event on the day of the American football #Superbowl. We spent all evening watching #stupidMovies like Airplane! and Ice Pirates and The Man with Two Brains. We called it #Stuporbowl and unlike the Superbowl it was a ton of fun.
@royal @thelinuxEXP That sounds fantastic.

@royal @thelinuxEXP I recently watched The Three Amigos which was… quite something. XD

Did you know the person playing the singing bush (who also wrote the music and co-wrote the screenplay) went on to write the music for Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Cars, and more? That absolutely tickles me.

@benjaminhollon @thelinuxEXP It's been a long time since I've seen that, and thanks for giving me a reason to check it out again!
@thelinuxEXP I love soccer but I would never watch it, I love to play it though.
@thelinuxEXP I felt exactly like that when Brazil was eliminated. Stop the count! 😂
@thelinuxEXP could not agree more!
@thelinuxEXP but.... are you gonna watch the match? (trolling)
@keyshooter 😂😂 you’d have to pay me a lot of money!
@thelinuxEXP @keyshooter they should put mics and earpieces in all the players
then it could be a CoD lobby
that would make it fun
@thelinuxEXP yeah, same, i just bet with my coworkers about markers, i could care less about football
@thelinuxEXP
Football isn't crap, modern politics are. People actually enjoy the sport, not the politics. I don't like football too, but I can completely understand people that make abstraction of the circumstances of the event just to support their team.
@internetwanderer Making abstraction of how that event is ran is horrible. It means valuing personal enjoyment of a sport over the well-being of the people who have been exploited to bring you that enjoyment. It’s absolutely not normal.
@thelinuxEXP Yes, you are right. At the end Qatar really did achieved to make most people forget about these lost lives. I don't personally watch soccer so I am not watching this world cup, but living in France I see that this sport really took a way too important place in our society. A ball game shouldn't dictate whether or not people should live, and shouldn't dictate the patriotic coherence of a country as it is mostly the case in France.
@thelinuxEXP I've played it back with your voice in my head 😂

@thelinuxEXP So much this. I can't stand football, but The Boy is very into it (+sport generally). That's great, except I have to drill into him that he mustn't boo the other team, nor hate other teams, nor be overly critical of people for supporting other teams, nor dislike players cos of who they play for.

It's really hard trying to counter the divisive nature of football. And it's only been an issue with football for him, not other sports e.g. cricket, rugby...

Maddening.
