Have you ever interacted with the website of another Mastodon server and found yourself having to re-enter your username and password, again and again?

There's a new browser extension called FediAct which lets you directly interact with other servers' websites without having to log in again or copy/paste addresses.

➡️ Chrome:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fediact/lmpcajpkjcclkjbliapfjfolocffednm

➡️ Firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fediact/

More info about it at:

The developer of FediAct is @lartsch

FediAct

Simplifies interactions on other Mastodon instances than your own. Visit https://github.com/lartsch/FediAct for more.

@lartsch

p.s. Using this extension is really easy:

1. Log in through your server's website (your server's website is the last part of your handle, for example mine is mstdn.social)

2. Install FediAct on your web browser (Firefox or Chrome)

3. Go to FediAct's settings page and enter your server (so for example mine is mstdn.social)

...that's it! While you are logged in on your own server's website, you can also interact with any Mastodon site without having to log in again or copy/paste.

@feditips @lartsch

Unfortunately impossible to use on Ubuntu 16.04 because what it recognizes as "latest" Firefox is too old for this extension.

@isucceed @feditips @lartsch why are you running such an old version? Anyway, you can install the Mozilla PPA repository or get the latest from Mozilla: https://vitux.com/4-ways-to-install-mozilla-firefox-in-ubuntu/

Thank you for the link.

I did that process, however, and I still get "the extension is incompatible with this version of your browser" - and, I'm in an infinite "please update" loop.

I'm on an old version because I haven't had the time to do the update, chasing everything it's likely to break and fixing it...

@isucceed @feditips @lartsch

There is a small chance an upgrade will breake something, but it use to go very smooth.

If you run

sudo apt dist-upgrade -y

it should upgrade without overwriting old config files etc.

@rpix @feditips @lartsch

You are very much appreciated. Thank you.

I will bookmark your reply, and do this as soon as mission-critical EOY things are safely done!

do-release-upgrade does an Ubuntu upgrade from one LTS to the next. Just be sure to do it before the next LTS falls out of support or it won't be able to do it.

Why dont all the servers communicate with all of the others?

@feditips @lartsch

Thank you so much, Lartsch. This is a great new extension.

@feditips @lartsch Sugar. This old man left Twitter. And I’m happy I did. At the same time, these posts do not really help me understand. Can you be more detailed so this 57 year old understands? I’m not fussing. I just want to do what I can do to make this app better than Twitter. ❤️ FYI. I do technical writing so I am happy to volunteer my services.
@feditips didn't work for Firefox. The button is disabled and Download link downloads a file that fails when I open it.
@feditips @lartsch
Hello. I installed the Firefox extension (Firefox is up to date) and it worked great for a day. Now, it's back to prompting me to sign into instances again, including people that I have followed. I clicked on install the extension again (web interface) and it says "Remove," so the extension is still installed. I'm using Firefox for Mac. I don't recall doing step number 3. Would you please provide the link to FediAct's settings page? Thank you.

@feditips @lartsch

I found the Mastodon extension icon at the top right of the Firefox window. I entered my server name, Universeodon.com, but it still doesn't work. I also tried entering just Universeodon and quitting and reopening Firefox. Still brings up Sign in dialog box. I just tried it with Chrome, installed the extension (I was logged into my server with both browsers.) I went to Chrome's settings and didn't find anywhere to enter server & no icon in browser I could see. Thank you!

@feditips @lartsch

Good to know I'm not the only one that happens to.

@feditips @lartsch So, great, but to attract the people fleeing to Post -- owned by tech VC and massive data gatherer Marc Andreesen -- installing a browser extension is more cumbersome than setting a cookie. Cookies aren't evil. Only evil cookies are evil.

@tracingcovid @feditips @lartsch

I'm no web dev but from my understanding, cross-domain cookies are pretty much impossible in modern browsers, especially if you don't control all those domains.

No less cumbersome than clicking on “Tweet This!”, being led to an interstitial where I have to log into Twitter and give it permissions and then jump back to the modal where I actually tweet.

This isn’t 1997 where nobody knows what a browser extension does either. Put it out there, walk ‘em through it. Each one, teach one.

@feditips @lartsch
Thanks! That's been a stumbling block for me as I learn to use the system.

@feditips @lartsch

That's a very nice thing! Thank you.

@feditips @lartsch

Meanwhile, I want you people to be careful with this and not visit just very random instances, as it's still exploitable: https://github.com/Lartsch/FediAct/issues/6

Blacklist may help, certainly, but not upon first visit.

Possible exploit: auto-clicking webapp · Issue #6 · Lartsch/FediAct

There is a probability of edge case where Mastodon web application might be exploited by some instance admin (or fork by association) to automatically click "boost", "favourite", "follow", etc., wh...

@feditips

that link is a lot of nattering for the technologically competent. Isn't there a button for anyo
ne to do this? It drives me nuts
@lartsch

@feditips
Hi again, ok it happened again. I went to check on a poster and got the message see the posts on another server, went there, all black, and went to boost a post from them so I could see it and had to go through the same rigamarole . Do I need to clear cache or something?@lartsch
@feditips @lartsch That's great, but I use Safari.
@lartsch @feditips @DaniEhm
I use the Safari browser too. I also have this issue where I can’t access some posts on other instances. I tried Firefox and Chrome previously with the same result. I prefer Safari.
@feditips @lartsch I'm on the ESR version of firefox, your add-on wants me to be on the 108 release of the regular channel
@feditips @lartsch I'm having this problem with the Android Mastodon app, which makes no sense.
@root2702 I ditched the apps. Much better using the web

@feditips @lartsch This is great! Would be great if @Gargron and other devs can take inspiration from this. Maybe even make it a recommended add-on.

See also my issue https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/21869, that can partly fix this on the user's server itself.

GitHub
@feditips @lartsch Would also be great if this add-on could somehow hide the sign-in and sign-up buttons. That will make it even more less confusing.
@feditips @lartsch
I went to the link and a popup told me this app wants data from all the websites I visit. For that reason, I did not add the app to my browser.
Could you please let me know why the app needs that kind of information?
@feditips @lartsch is Microsoft supported? I use that as my search engine on my android. Although I have a pixel 6 pro, I much prefer Microsoft as my search engine etc. Hate Google. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 #microsoft #google

@feditips @lartsch

Thank you!

Considering when I attempt to log in I receive "incorrect user name and/or password".

Even when user name is my email address (hasn't changed) and I've verified my password (hasn't changed).

I'm afraid to logout, because I don't know if I'll be able to re-log in.

@feditips @lartsch sitting here, using only an iPhone & app 😞

@feditips

Omg this will be a game changer for me in terms of usability. It drives me INSANE and is a significant barrier to my engagement. Thank you @lartsch.

@feditips @lartsch

Couple of questions:
1) Is this extension possible for you to create for Duck Duck Go?
2) How well is it working for people so far?

*FediAct*
Excelente esse addon para Firefox e Chrome!

@feditips That's cool! Kind of sounds like OpenWebAuth from Hubzilla.
@feditips @lartsch And it should be noted that the Chrome extension can be used with other browser like MS Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi.
@feditips @lartsch
I've been hoping to see exactly this! I hope this becomes available for @Vivaldi, too!
@feditips @lartsch "This add-on is not actively monitored for security by Mozilla. Make sure you trust it before installing."
@feditips @lartsch Doesn't seem to work on the Brave browser.
@feditips @lartsch I needed this extension. Just installed it on Firefox.
@feditips @lartsch Also, if you are accessing Mastodon through a web browser, you can go into settings >>> preferences and check "Enable advanced web interface" to get an interface that is quite similar to tweetdeck. cc @emptywheel

@feditips @lartsch

Grand, have this every hour.

However, in the official #MastodonApp on #Android. 😞

@feditips @lartsch not compatible with Android yet. But I love the idea and will try it when I get home!
@feditips @lartsch will have to give this a try when I get home. Thanks for the info!
