Today, President Biden will sign the Respect for Marriage Act. It will nullify the odious act known as DOMA, which had enshrined anti LGBTQ+ prejudice and discrimination into law.
Federal recognition of same sex marriages, by statute, is an important safeguard, but we must still do more. We must now enshrine the protections of Obergefell into law, so that no state can deny same-sex couples the rights and privileges afforded heterosexual married couples.
@georgetakei Monumental and long overdue.
@georgetakei President Biden has been written into my nice list with a permanent sharpie.
@Santaclaus the guy arming a saudi genocide in yemen?
@georgetakei And we must do it pursuant to Section 5 of the 14th Amendment!
@georgetakei A day of joy ❤️ I hope this is a step towards having women’s body autonomy rights signed into law next. One step at a time
@godisafreak @georgetakei .
Exactly.
Every human being must have body autonomy. It is all we are, once sky fairies, gods and goddesses are removed from the equation.
@georgetakei i’m happy to see this law passed, but I’m ashamed that we needed to do it. Much love from my family to yours. 🥰
@georgetakei it's a good start. Until everyone is free to be who they are and live their lives when those lives are of no harm to others we won't stop ❤️ I wish we had even a fraction of that progress this side of the Atlantic - LGBTQ people here are just as vilified in the UK today. 🖖❤️
@kayeluvian @georgetakei I agree! People should be free to be themselves regardless of where they live.
@kayeluvian @georgetakei It's my understanding that Abortion and Same sex marriage are legal in both Ireland's now. If Catholic Ireland can do this so can the United States.
@georgetakei Thanks for the updates on important issues. I know you may not see the same level of interaction here compared to Twitter, but posting here is very valuable to those of us who don't want to support what's happening on that platform. So rest assured, people are reading and learning from your posts, keep at it!
@georgetakei The #CanadianGovernment should do that here to. This past weekend there were right-wing 😡😠😤🤬and counter protesters 🥳outside a Canadian library where a #dragqueen was reading to kids. The right-wingers forgot that kids don't care who reads to them. I as a straight person
support the lgbtq. 🏳️‍🌈
@georgetakei ,
In my lifetime, my interracial marriage would have been illegal. Loving v Virginia, like Obergefell v Hodges, was as unprotected as Roe v Wade by statute. And no, I do not believe Uncle Clarence would have voted to preserve it. (Applies to Thee, not to Me)
@georgetakei
This law keeps the status quo, which at least partially protects some progress. But there are a lot more improvements that can be made when it comes to marriage and legally protecting and benefitting relationships. There are many families in the US who have more than just two adults. Ethical group marriage has always been part of the human experience and also deserves legal benefits. There are mutual support agreements here that are not being honored.

@georgetakei sadly it's not going to make any difference if the far-right christofascists aren't defeated in every single election going forward.

Anything that can be voted into law can be voted out of law.

When does my life stop hanging in the balance?

@georgetakei I made my contribution and It would be a disaster if everything we did was for nothing

@georgetakei

To me, marriage is a religious ceremony sort of sanctioned by our government for tax and financial reasons.

Maybe, Civil Unions should be the government sanctioned act and marriage is just an act between the couple and their deities.

In short, gods/religion/deities shouldn't be involved in any government decision making issue.

That's my uneducated thoughts on the subject. Separation of church/government needs to be 100% codified today.

@TopKnot @georgetakei religion was late to the party. People been getting hitched before the church and will be doing so when it has passed. Sanctifying a legal union according to one's traditions and beliefs is fine, though surely some legal unions would not be sanctioned by some churches. Which is why they cannot control who is married - discrimination. The state sanctions marriage according to applicable statutes and common law to avoid unjust discrimination.
@georgetakei Thanks for pointing out the new law's shortcomings. It is a win, but only a partial one, and most coverage of it glosses over what it doesn't do.
@georgetakei What kind of #neoliberalism did i just read? doesn't the respect for marriage act allow 32 states to prohibit future gay marriages? How is that worth celebrating? I know it's better than nothing but damn you're celebrating baseline getting by like the Roman army just came home victorious.

@patchshorts @georgetakei

Not really. States can choose to not allow Gary mariages inside their state (this is stupid and bad) but it still makes them uphold gay marriages in other states.

This means we, as a community, are going to have to step up and help bring couples from these states to get married in other states. Their marriage will still be valid in their regressive state.

@Shadowfalx @georgetakei by saying not really you're leaning into celebrating a partial and late victory. Not good. All they have to do now is take control and edit the bit out where they must honor other states' marriages. You handed them another framework for inequality and are happy about it.
@georgetakei As I read this I was shedding tears. My daughter came into the living room asked "What's wrong mommy?" I wipe the tears from my face and pulled Queen in closely, telling her "Biden is scrubbing all the evil that the orange who shall not be named has done to us." Queen squealed in delight to share the news to zer Madre. The three of us all embraced and weeped in tears of joy. Bless you Biden. You will go down as the greatest hero humanity ever received. Awomen :pray:

@georgetakei

It's not nearly enough, but it's something. Hopefully it's the basis for true legal equality nationwide!

@georgetakei we need a ERA amendment. i am willing to make a bet that it wont be long before this law is challenged by SCOTUS. #scotus #SCOTUSisBroken #tenthamendment
@georgetakei Hey, there! Hope you’re considering being on Post, too!
@georgetakei Gay rights is human rights for all! Same sex marriage defines a marriage based on two adults who love each other, not by politicians! I am married to a woman, and I am not threatened by a same sex marriage! All of you antigay homophobes, get over your bigotry! I say good for federal and state recognition of marriages, same sex, interracial, nonreligious AND oppo-sex! About time, #dumbocrats ! (I'm leaving out #rethuglicans for obvious reasons)
@georgetakei Same sex marriage is protected by the first amendment, freedom of assembly! https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/amendment-1/

The original text of the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States.

@georgetakei
Yes!! A critical step today, but not enough. The Respect for Marriage Act still allows states to prohibit new LGBTQ+ marriages.

More must be done! Sadly, I don’t expect any movement unless Dems get back control of House, Senate and WH in 2024. The work starts now!

@georgetakei I know that it is not a popular position, but I believe that the Constitution was designed so that the states could remain united even while not sharing ideologies. I.e. Utah was fine for polygamy and should still be so. California should be allowed to be a "gay only" state if that's what their population demand. And, by extension, maybe Florida is a hetero-only state. While nobody WANTS any of those... it demonstrates how marriage might not be best mandated at the Federal level

@XeataOne @georgetakei

A marriage is a financial union between and needs to be mandated at the Federal level for tax purposes.

@georgetakei
And continue to do absolutely nothing for trans folks. The equality act would have effectively nullified DOMA and helped protect trans people from discrimination. This is nothing more than a cynical punt on protecting the rights latest punching bag.
@georgetakei an amazing productive presidency so far!
@georgetakei It is not enough. But it is a win, and given where we were four years ago, it is huge. Biden is far too conservative for me, but honestly, this administration has done much more than I thought they would.
@georgetakei I am so happy that he did this and on the other hand, I think it is stupid that we had to.....
@georgetakei The Mormon church sure isn't going to be happy about this.
@cosmictentacle @georgetakei They came out in favor of the bill.
@shelenn @georgetakei That says to me there must be some loopholes or something in it.
@georgetakei @Jenfeds1073 A lot of people don't realize that a lot of my marriage rights and family protections are gone if the court overturns Obergefell. We have to keep fighting.
@georgetakei yes, the way women's right to abortion has been denied.
@georgetakei As long as we're at it, can we arrest Tucker Carlson for terrorism?
@georgetakei a lot of oppressors and hypocrites in sheep’s clothing must be deeply upset 🤭😀🖖🏻
@georgetakei more like the desecration of marriage act.
