Here to talk to other chemists, educators, and birders.

Where should I start?

How about one of my favorite photos I've ever takenโ€”a remarkably friendly Red-breasted Nuthatch.

@brandontate Welcome. I spent a lot of time birding about 30 years ago. But, "once a birder, always a birder." The enjoyment of knowing what you're looking at, or knowing that you don't know, never goes away. Also the keen appreciation of thinking about how to look at anything in nature. #birding
@brandontate Welcome to Mastodon. If you toot bird pictures now and then you'll definitely have a happy follower in me!
@KropBenesch Thanks for following! I'll be posting my own bird photos and sharing some of my favorites from other Mastodon photographers from around the world.
@brandontate Brandon, you are exactly what I need in a world of bad news and crazy people who don't know nature!

@brandontate Oh, very nice! I've never been able to get a camera pointed at one of those long enough to get a picture, let alone a good one like that. (then again I'm not really a bird photographer; I do shorebird counts and ordinary bird watching, so if I can get a picture with my phone that's a good day for me)

@brandontate
I'm none of those things, but that is a gorgeous photo!

@hurlibon Thanks!

Are you sure you're not a birder?

All you have to do is download a bird ID app like Merlin and go outside. Birds are everywhere!

@brandontate
It's true. And they're pretty fabulous.
@brandontate
I taught chemistry for a few decades and love birds. Iโ€™m an old, retired โ€œback to the landerโ€ but not totally off grid. Great to meet you.
@ldelegge Sounds like you and I have a few things in common!
@brandontate use hashtags to get more posts from people who are interested in the same things. For example #birds
@brandontate welcome! one good way to start is to post with hashtags, or click through and/or follow hashtags that are relevant! Thereโ€™s no global text search so hashtags are a big part of discoverability

@currentbias Will do! Thanks for the suggestion!
@brandontate
Don't forget to stop by http://birds.town when you have some free time too.
Bird's Town

A server primarily meant for people who like birds, birding and nature in general, but obviously everyone is equally welcome here! ๐Ÿชถ Have fun cawing about ๐Ÿชถ

@brandontate Welcome! That is a beautiful photograph! Over here, hashtags are essential to finding your โ€œpeople.โ€ These are a few in the birding community. ๐Ÿฆ #birds #birding #naturephotography
@cheryllovestoread Thanks for the tips. I'm starting to get used to the way hashtags work here.
@brandontate make a #introduction post and use lots of hashtags. Your ornithology peeps are out there waiting to find you. :)

@brandontate Birders?

May I introduce you to @Nome

@brandontate I'm sure they're out there. It just might take some time to find them. Try searching with keywords or hashtags. For my part, I teach tech writing and med writing. I'm a terrible photographer but try anyway, and I love birds, though grad school and multiple jobs interfere with my being a birder.
@brandontate none of those are my areas or expertise, but I highly recommend following @ct_bergstrom who is a STEM professor and birder.
