I love closing out the year with this. 😊

On December 31, 1995, exactly 27 years ago today, legendary cartoonist Bill Watterson published his final 'Calvin and Hobbes' comic strip.

How beautiful and appropriate it was, and a timeless reminder of what we have before us in 2023. ❤️

Happy New Year, ya'll!

Three quarters of major observatories affected by light pollution

Researchers from Italy, Chile and Galicia have studied and compared the light pollution levels at major astronomical observatories across the world. The study shows that light is polluting the sky above most observatories and that immediate action is needed to decrease the amount of contamination coming from artificial light. The work was published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Standing near a streetlight makes it harder to see the stars. Have you ever wondered how much of the artificial sky brightness is due to streetlight scattering *within your eyes*? Here you have some answers: https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.09103
Skyglow inside your eyes: intraocular scattering and artificial brightness of the night sky

The visual perception of the natural night sky in many places of the world is strongly disturbed by anthropogenic light. Part of this artificial light is scattered in the atmosphere and propagates towards the observer, adding to the natural brightness and producing a light polluted sky. However, atmospheric scattering is not the only mechanism contributing to increase the visual skyglow. The rich and diverse biological media forming the human eye also scatter light very efficiently and contribute, in some cases to a big extent, to the total sky brightness detected by the retinal photoreceptors. In this paper we quantify this effect and assess its relevance when the eye pupil is illuminated by light sources within the visual field. Our results show that intraocular scattering constitutes a significant part of the perceived sky brightness at short distances from streetlights. These results provide quantitative support to the everyday experience that substantial gains in naked-eye star limiting magnitudes can be achieved by blocking the direct light from the lamps that reaches the eye pupil. Urban lighting designs that reduce the illuminance over the eye pupil and locate the sources at large angles with respect to the visual axis are expected to help decreasing the artificial intraocular skyglow.

🧸 💔 As of December 21, 450 children have died as a result of the Russian war on #Ukraine.
More than 863 were injured.

When my family & I first moved to our Kyiv #Ukraine apartment building back in 2002, a sweet old lady by the name of Vera living one floor below us gave us a warm reception by treating to a home-backed plum pie which taste I can still recall today. She always gave me candies whenever she saw me.
This morning my mom told me in call that she, sadly, passed away two days ago when our city was heavily shelled.
Doctors said her heart couldn’t bear it.
💔 Truly heartbreaking. #UkraineWar
I started on Mastodon 6 weeks ago. I'm still missing some Twitter contacts and hope they will show up sooner or later. I found new contacts. And I found a great community of people who care, not too mention lots of good vibes. This is different than Twitter. This is better!
Cities should be built for all of us, but they are mostly built by men. Barcelona is changing this, creating a city that includes the women's perspective. Watch this video for surprising aspects of better cities - also for disabled, elderly and children. https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-50269778
What would a city designed by women be like?

Parts of modern Barcelona show what a city designed by women, rather than men, might look like.
