I'm really happy Snipping Tool is getting a recording feature - have wanted that forever

Screen recording in Snipping Tool begins rolling out to Windows Insiders

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are beginning to roll out an update to the Snipping Tool app (version 11.2211.35.0) for Windows 11 to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel. We are just beginning the roll out now so not all Insiders in the Dev

@JenMsft It is?!? OMG this is going to make my life training coworkers so much easier.

Does it include the cursor? (please tell me it does).

@Danielsand @JenMsft Is this them just pulling the Xbox Game Bar behavior into a work appropriate app? Having to reinstall the Xbox Game Bar on work PCs so people could screen record was *hilarious*.
@ocdtrekkie @JenMsft LOL. I had the same problem. I tried to explain to coworkers to use the Xbox function to record their screens for training and it took way too long to explain to them that it was just a screen recording tool.
@Danielsand @ocdtrekkie For what it's worth, PowerPoint has a screen recording function too, which can select the area of the screen. If you're trying to get them to record demos or something, I'd go with that over game bar

@JenMsft @ocdtrekkie

Yah we ended up just using that for future training. Especially because some just could not get it with the shortcut memorization or were intimidated by the power features of the game bar.

PPT worked well for them. Especially when we mentored teens b/c they all were guaranteed to have access to it on their locked- down school computers.

This makes it even easier.
Now I just need to convince IT to get us on Win 11.

@ocdtrekkie @Danielsand The game bar is designed to help with needs while you're gaming (aka the window in focus). With this new option in snipping tool you can select the area you'd like to record
@JenMsft oh this is wonderful indeed. Can it save as a gif?
@Emily_S Just MP4 currently I believe
@JenMsft fair. Easy enough to convert if needed, and probably smaller result as a default.
@JenMsft probably a known issue, but i'd love if doing a window snip with the new rounded corners kept those rounded corners transparent in the PNG (as happens on macOS)
@JenMsft Just tested now. Seems to work amazing! Finally! Thanks so much for this.
@JenMsft looking forward to reach stable!
@JenMsft The snipping tool has recently saved me... since Snagit 2023 crashes Power BI.
@JenMsft This is great - OBS does the job of course, but it was just *a bit* overkill most of the time
Meh. I’ve been waiting for circle and rectangle drawing forever.

@JenMsft I thought the Snipping Tool was on the way out in favour of Snip & Sketch?

I'd already mourned it and moved onto a third-party app

@windos In Windows 11 the snipping experiences have been converged into a single modern snipping tool app
@JenMsft I will no longer need to draw red arrows. I can just gesture aggressively with my mouse cursor.
@JenMsft Ooh lovely, have a 🌟
