@q Ohh some new ones there!
@q such great names. Thanks for sharing. (Y’all. Click on the link. Zoom in to see the names. My fave: Hans Snow-Lo) #TheWeatherOutsideIsFrightful #traffic #ScottishGritters
@q This is so endearing 😊
@q my favourite is Basil Salty
@q I think my favourite is Gritty Gritty Bang Bang :)
@q Gritallica 😂🤘
@q love them. Will have to borrow a few for our first snowfall. What is the actual accumulation?
@q I’m guessing a gritter is a plow?
@q and how much snow requires a gritter? An inch or 2 is left for sun here, unless it’s freezing. Now what throws you into panic mode 6+ inches?

@CharliDuffy6 @q Half the time (probably much more even!) it’s not even snow that is the issue but *ice*. Scotland exists with a winter climate bang on freezing!

....and most of these gritters - certainly in S half of Scotland - are not out because of snow but bc of that ice risk.

@CharliDuffy6 @q Oh sorry spotted your first Q: yes and no! A glitter will usually be capable of snow-ploughing but they are for spreading ‘grit’ = rock salt.
@AeonMach @CharliDuffy6 @q I love that it's been spellchecker to glitter! 😂
@LindW @CharliDuffy6 @q Ha ha, well spotted. Bloomin autocorrect.
I’m not editing that though bc we all need a bit of sparkle in our lives...
@AeonMach @q got it. Just a truck wit plow on front and spreader in back. Hopefully you cut the salt with lots of sand
@CharliDuffy6 Black ice.
@ariaflame as a resident of New England, know black ice well, scary shit. So grit is salt. Gritter is spreader.
@CharliDuffy6 Salt and grit mixture I think. I've not been back in a while, and not been back during snow even longer. But when I did live there I lived above the snow line and in Winter had to wait for the grit trucks to come round before we could drive out. (Snow plough on front, grit&salt dispenser on back I think)
@ariaflame no snow? Can’t think of a worse way to spend winter. Don’t do winter sports but love shoveling and snowblowing, though anything over 18-24” at a clip can get tiring.
@CharliDuffy6 No such thing where I live now. A couple of places get a dusting in the coldest times. Eastern states get some but not my area of the West #Australia
@ariaflame so 😞. Can’t even imagine. Although people in the south always comment, when we get nor’easters, with pics of sunshine and beaches. To which I respond with a pic of hurricane ravaged area and state my snow will be melted and gone soon-how’s the rebuilding going? Two can play that game 😂
@q Michigan has Ctrl Salt Delete
@q I'm suprised there aren't more "Mr Wilson"s amongst them.
@q What the world needs more of are women and men of grit. How wonderful to have a relationship to a country of real grit.
@q Sir snowington 🤣🤣🤣🤣 göttlich
@q ‘spready mercury’ is my favourite.
@q wait what? you have that on tracking?
@copydbwoy one of the better uses of government data!
@q I think Skid Vicious is my favourite 😂
@q Oh, this is so good. I’m now slightly obsessed with your gritters.
@q I'd love to boost if this had an image description
@q @dattmay thought you'd appreciate this.
@q
Gonnae Snow Dae That hasn't returned this year?
@q I love this! There are some great names there.
@q "For Your Ice Only", "Licence to Chill", and "You Only Grit Ice" are all great Bond movie titles, presumably tributes to Sir Sean Connery the Scot. Guess there won't be an "On His Majesty's Slippery Surface"?
@jspath55 I have yet to see OHMSS but we absolutely do need it now
@q It's Lazenby, not Connery, but also, it's got the late + great Dame Diana Rigg!
@q @jspath55 it's currently parked in Glasgow!
@russss @jspath55 oh my god it actually exists!
@q Ooh, I already see some that I don't remember from last year ^^
@q If you get a green biofuel/hydrogen/electric gritter please name it Gritter Thunberg.
@pthane excellent suggestion, you should send that to Transport Scotland
@q I LOVE that there is no Plow King. Fuck that guy.
@q I hope Spready Mercury isn't too literal.
20 CDOT Snow Plows Get Names Thanks to Creative Submissions from Colorado Kids | Colorado Governor Jared Polis

@q i spent a semester in Fort Augustus long time ago, i see it's "for your ice only" in the area!
@q that’s such a fun thing to do! What about Gritty McGritFace? 😹
@weaniejeanie53 @q That was my first thought! Turns out, there is (but further south): https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-shropshire-46002864
'Gritty McGritface' wins Shropshire gritter naming ballot

The names of 24 new gritters for Shropshire also include "Gritney Spears" and "Spready Mercury".

@wviechtb @q oh I didn’t realise they’d named them in England too, glad that our choice has been used though. I have to say I’m pleased that the actual polar research ship was named for Sir David Attenborough, who better, but one of its underwater vessels carries the name forward, BoatyMcBoatFace even has its own Wikipedia entry!
@weaniejeanie53 @q That's a nice compromise - did not know that!
@q they are tongue in cheek amusing and definitely bring a smile to your face…but, ‘hilarious’ no, not really 🤷🏻‍♀️
Bah humbug moment over…
