Downside to Mastodon:
No one I know in real life can figure out how to use it.

Upside to Mastodon:
No one I know in real life can figure out how to use it.

@ultradeb
That describes everything I use.

Until people start using it a few years later when I move on because it got bad once it got popular :P

@xtrems876 I think Mastodon is just convoluted enough to put most people off. Fingers crossed.
@ultradeb @xtrems876 we both, alas, suffer from a tribe not as brilliant as we....
@TinCanWin @ultradeb oh I didn't mean that the people themselves made it bad. I meant that large projects are bound to be more and more desensitized from their audiences due to how big they are (so you're not gonna be able to handle millions of feature requests coming in every day), and due to the fact that stakes got too high to upset anyone - be it the userbase or stakeholders.
Birsite is of course an exception because instead of being frozen by its size, it is actively destroying itself

@ultradeb

It didn’t take me long at all but this is all I hear elsewhere is it’s hard to use and figure out.

@kbsez @ultradeb yeah i didn't find the learning curve at all either. What do people struggle with, other than finding people to follow?

@manpageman @kbsez @ultradeb I only had difficulty finding a server for a bit, as the first few I tried weren't accepting new users. There was also no overt indicator of that many times, except the lack of a signup button.

Eventually, I joined the server George Takei used, lol, and all is going great

@manpageman @kbsez @ultradeb I find it a bit annoying that despite how many replies there may be to a post the reply button always says 1.

@thefalcon @manpageman @ultradeb

I think back to the early days of twitter and 90% of the cool features and smooth elements were definitely not there. We used to have to manually retweet by copy/paste and typing in the RT.

Despite everything and all the work put in on it already, Mastodon is still evolving.

@kbsez @ultradeb - Puzzling. Seems about the same as how Twitter worked. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@laurapersister @ultradeb

Yeah, At first I thought it was all about the server you picked and it was hard to communicate with or follow folks on other servers but it's not--- not at all.

with a tool like movetodon.org I was able to keep checking and following folks ----

But there is still that impression from common folk. Make no mistake, the people already on Mastodon are early adopters and tech oriented people for the most part.

@ultradeb

The "choose an instance" and "follow interesting people" seem to be very challenging for many people.

@stwhite @ultradeb I think that people might get overwhelmed by the large choice of instances (I doubt people believe the oft-written advice 'it doesn't matter where you start')... and then find many not taking new users at the moment.

I signed up for an approval and never heard back after weeks and forgot about it. Eventually I found an interesting instance that was taking users.

@whyJoe @ultradeb

Yeah, there are certainly some traffic jam issues. Massive influx can make that dicey. One big reason I spun up my own instances.

@stwhite @ultradeb Hopefully more people make hosting a good number of users workable for them, or even monetize. I could see some kind of value-added situation working out for people eventually. Maybe? ... As long as it's not an NFT. Please.

@whyJoe @ultradeb

I'd like to see it become so ubiquitous that it becomes like email - your ISP providing an instance that matches your ISP email. A vital service, if you will :D

@whyJoe @stwhite @ultradeb I've heard instance mentioned before but don't know what it means.
@thefalcon @stwhite @ultradeb Same meaning as Mastodon server.

@ultradeb

Basics

Toot with a hashtag, that seems to be the best way to 📢

@ultradeb That kind of matches my experience of twatter.
@ultradeb yaaaaaaaas bring back the days of needing to know how to fuck around with irq jumpers and modems to get online. that natural filter worked pretty well
@ultradeb
Roflol That about sums it up.
@ultradeb I’ve figured it out 👍🏼
@ultradeb definitely no one cuz I'm trying to find a community on here lol. Just seeing random posts which is cool for now, but...
@ultradeb I purposefully haven’t told anyone in real life about my mastodon account. If they wanted to they could find me but I’d rather keep them separate. That’s what I have FB for. That’s where I keep my real world friends. My online friends are here and the birdsite. They overlap a little on Insta.
@ultradeb Almost like with Warez... Running away from the "cool" tech for the newest that no one else is muddying
@ultradeb i don’t understand why people find it so confusing. It’s quite simple.
@ultradeb I do not wish to be found, thx.
@ultradeb I’m not sure it’s for me.
@ultradeb why does this comment make me long for the heyday of Usenet
@ultradeb I keep hearing from other people how difficult it is to the point that I’m worried I’m doing it wrong because I took to it too easily…
@ultradeb I really don’t get why some people apparently find Mastodon difficult to use/understand. What’s wrong with them?
Mastodon Modern by Freeplay

Improves the look & feel of Mastodon. Can be used with other themes that only change colors.

@ultradeb
Being new to Mastodon feels like taking a trip on your own in a strange and wonderful foreign land
@JenniferSlack It’s so nice and chill over here. The first thing I look at when I wake up now is #Mosstodon.
@ultradeb Sounds like you need to get out more, ha. :-}}
@claralistensprechen I’d actually like to get out LESS! I need way more Cheetos-on-the-couch time, I swear to god.
@ultradeb That definitely truncates your real-life-people set considerably.
@ultradeb I don't know why people think it's complicated. I've been here two weeks and I've only had to consult my old college calculus books twice.
@ultradeb 😂🤣 It’s great, isn’t it? 😉😆
@ultradeb this right here. this is a fact! you sir are brilliant
@ultradeb uh…. ma’am i meant. uff da.
@ultradeb I told some friends I'd help them get started, and now I'm like, "Nah!"
@ultradeb I keep thinking I should suggest it to friends, and then I realize that I love not having anyone I actually know in real life in my feed.
