The "choose an instance" and "follow interesting people" seem to be very challenging for many people.

@stwhite @ultradeb I think that people might get overwhelmed by the large choice of instances (I doubt people believe the oft-written advice 'it doesn't matter where you start')... and then find many not taking new users at the moment.

I signed up for an approval and never heard back after weeks and forgot about it. Eventually I found an interesting instance that was taking users.

Yeah, there are certainly some traffic jam issues. Massive influx can make that dicey. One big reason I spun up my own instances.

@stwhite @ultradeb Hopefully more people make hosting a good number of users workable for them, or even monetize. I could see some kind of value-added situation working out for people eventually. Maybe? ... As long as it's not an NFT. Please.

I'd like to see it become so ubiquitous that it becomes like email - your ISP providing an instance that matches your ISP email. A vital service, if you will :D
