Today I learned that the Welsh word for microwave is "popty-ping." In a sane world, this would be the only word for a microwave.
@taz I had to look it up! 😂
@taz I will never ever try to verify that, it’s just too perfect

@taz

Welsh is such a cool language.

@taz apparently that's a fake made up fact. pity though loved that word
@vikkio @taz Evidently popty is the real word for oven, and ping is a rarely used onomatopoeic addition. https://welearnwelsh.com/words/welsh-word-for-microwave-popty-ping-meicrodon/ So, half true?
The Welsh Word for Microwave – Is it really popty ping? - We Learn Welsh

Did you know that the most searched-for Welsh word on the web is microwave? (With the possible exception of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, of course!) The widely accepted word is for microwave in Welsh is popty microdon (or just microdon) with popty meaning oven and microdon meaning microwave. @vikkio @taz too bad! Can we apply to the Welsh to consider changing it??
@wallflower @vikkio @taz or the English could adopt it and change microwave, if we’ve taken back control...
@tmyerscough @wallflower @taz I am still waiting for the law on British bananas curvature, ah and the minor thing of millions to the NHS.
BBC News - E-mail error ends up on road sign

An automated e-mail response reading in Welsh: "I am not in the office at the moment" is mistakenly put on a road sign.

@taz i love that one ( my SiL lives i Wales) I also like the Australian- whipper snipper

@taz

Love that. Poppy-ping it will be!

@taz Fantastic! This kind of thing is of bonus worth to us on this mastodon host (oulipo.social). OTOH, lingua cymru is not known by many, so its utility has its limits.
@taz that alone is a reason to learn Welsh!
@taz
@LittleFishy
Thank you for that! Never want to be without my popty ping... 🤣😍
@bps_artish

@taz It isn't really, sadly - 'microdon' is 'microwave', 'popty microdon' is 'microwave oven'. (In North Wales, dunno about South Wales, where 'oven' is 'ffwrn'.)

My Welsh speaking friend explained 'popty ping' as sounding like something a little child would come up with if they didn't know the actual word, and apparently it pisses off some Welsh speakers that it's become this huge meme/joke example of Welsh.

It's a bit like 'Whose coat is that jacket?' which is simultaneously something English people say to mock the Welsh, something Welsh people use as a self-deprecating joke, and something Welsh people might just actually say sometimes.

@jackmottram Argh! ... It's so disheartening to find that I've been misled by youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsOjMdbsGik; not actually where I first saw it, but I feel it makes a convincing argument?) 😔

@taz There's this whole "not quite" explanation: https://welearnwelsh.com/words/welsh-word-for-microwave-popty-ping-meicrodon/

But I still want to say it that way 😅

@taz if they have to make up words like that how can it ever be taken seriously as a language?
@taz I texted a friend this meme, and he replied with “Popty PNG”!
@taz in Japan, they call it a “ching.” While living over there I had a colleague ask me what we say in the US, I thought “nuke it” and couldn't bring myself to share!

@taz Hinterland is a very good detective show set in Wales but hands down the best thing about it is that there is an episode in which the word "popty-ping" is said repeatedly!

#Hinterland #Welsh #Cymraeg #PoptyPing

@taz I haven't been active on Mastodon for long, but this is going to be my favorite post for a very long time....
@CatherineRussell2 I know you don’t like your microwave, but maybe you can be friends with a “popty-ping”?
@taz sadly this is a myth. The actual Welsh word for microwave is microdon, which sounds like a baby dinosaur and it's, IMHO, even cooler

@taz I don’t care if it’s true or not, it’s cool.

We call it Food TV.

@taz Also the Welsh for butterfly is pili-pala.
@taz you taught me something new today. Merci
@taz I feel lied to. By Them.
