I heard about this book on Twitter through following the author as she prepared for publication. Having an interest in graphic design I was drawn to the premise that a typeface could make people ill and others could be immune and how that could play out in an alternative world. #HellSans is imposed on the population by the government and those who are allergic (HSAs) languish in the ghetto.
It’s possible to read this book in different ways as it is in 3 parts and the first 2 can be read in either order with the third part being the final reveal of the story. Reading in audio, I just went with the flow.
You are straight into the action with a whirlwind of a first chapter which sets things up and has you intrigued. There’s a lot to catch onto as you go along and I loved working out how things fit together.
The author plays with themes of #disability and surveillance/assistive tech in this world to comment on how badly people are treated in society. Ever has ME and says ‘HellSans was influenced by my experience as a disabled person living under a Tory government that was investigated by the UN for human rights violations against disabled people. I experienced how quickly and easily you can fall through the cracks of capitalism, and I got a taste of the dehumanising punitive benefits system.’ There’s a fair amount of body horror here including plenty of vomit which some people might find hard to read. For me, it helped to underline The reality of living with a #ChronicIllness where you’re not in complete control of your body. The main characters, Icho and Jane are complicated and unlikeable at times which made them come alive and the narrator, Sofia Zervudachi, played them so engagingly. This is a wonderful, smart thriller that makes for a compelling read.

This book might sound serious and yes, there are themes in it that pack a punch but it’s done in a satirical way with plenty of humour and great use of wordplay. It’s also left me questioning my use of Alexa as the characters all have evolved versions of this type of smart assistant which are kind of little characters who sit on their shoulder and follow them around all day. Useful and terrifying in equal measure! Now time to rewind to the start again and catch all those bits I didn’t quite get the first time around #HellSans #bookstodon #Review #audiobook #Reading
@sarahmatthews This sounds fascinating Sarah, thank you. Your description made me think of a book I loved a few years ago ‘The Raw Shark Texts’ -(It is available as an audio book). The main character has amnesia, so it also explores disabilities. It’s a bit speculative fiction & a bit steam punk, it has a giant shark made fragments of other people’s words. It’s odd, but I really enjoyed it. I’m just off to look at ‘Hellsans’ now 😊
@SWSnop13 ooh thanks for the recommendation, I’m going to go and look that up! I love a book that is a bit off kilter, a little edgy and confuses you as you read ha ha
@sarahmatthews Me too! This will definitely do that. 😊 Honestly, my TBR pile is multiplying at alarming rates since I joined Mastodon 🤦🏻‍♀️
@sarahmatthews Another for the TBR pile! This sounds like a great disability read, thanks for the thorough thoughts.
@nostoat yeah, it’s brilliant! I attended a virtual book launch for it a few weeks ago and hearing the author talk about the book you could really see how much thought has been put into it. Great disability rep and a story that stays with you
