Hey nerds, can someone recommend a few resources on learning ins/outs of windows? I'm trying to slug through 'windows internals' book and this miiiight be too much. I just want to be a better user, while windows for dummies is too surface level. Halp. #appsec #infosec #windows
@bitchpeas I find the CIS benchmark guides to be a helpful way to kickstart learning a new OS. It covers a lot of configuration changes and explains why they should be changed. It might help ease into the internals book.
@SandPaper that's the first time I've heard that, thank you I'll take a look ๐Ÿ‘Œ
@bitchpeas My quick answer is that I think your ask is too broad. I would need to know your objective(s). One person might want to know how to do basic computer operations, like you can find in Windows for Dummies. Another person might want to dive deeper, like customizing settings in Microsoft Defender. Someone else might want to know how to do registry edits, or interpret Event Viewer logs, or understand the feature differences between the Home and Enterprise editions.

@fifonetworks
" customizing settings in Microsoft Defender."

Ooo do this one. I find MS documentation tough to dig through

@KBTechEnt
The GUI is certainly not user friendly.
@bitchpeas Seek out Paul Thurrott on the birdsite (for now, I guess?)
@bitchpeas reading Windows internals cover to cover is kind of like reading a dictionary cover to cover... I see it as more of a reference. Look specific stuff up.
HTTPS://Learn.Microsoft.com is an amazing resource for anything Microsoft related. Pick an area you would like to learn and go down the rabbit hole.

@sudohuman yeah it's pretty rough. My colleague rec'd it when I asked how they became a wizard.
@bitchpeas Book some time with your friendly neighborhood Citrix engineer. More often than not, those are the folks that have the broadest understanding of how it works including all its infrastructure interdependencies.

@bitchpeas
https://www.computerhope.com/ has a lot of great, accessible content

Microsoft has some quick start guides for Windows 10

IT-oriented system management guides can be a good middle ground - this blog post links a variety of good Microsoft resources

Good luck!

@bitchpeas if you ask me the question 100 times, I'll always say check Pavel's courses/books/etc.

This should be great:
https://www.pluralsight.com/courses/windows-11-internals-foundations

Windows 11 Internals: Foundations

This course will teach you the foundations on which the Windows OS is built, its main mechanisms and architecture. This will allow you to get deeper into Windows, whether you are a developer, researcher, or other power user.

@dfir very awesome, thanks I'll check it out
@bitchpeas I read this as โ€œleaning in/out of windowsโ€ ๐Ÿคช
@tsupasat ๐Ÿ˜‚โ€‹ document.window.location

@bitchpeas second the Paul Thurrot books & blog (if those are still around)

I would also suggest searching for "power user" resources. There used to be a whole bunch of authors who did "Windows for Power Users" type books & training, similar to this:

https://www.amazon.com/Power-User-Guide-Ultimate-Everyone-ebook/dp/B015M9Y0KE/

Much of that info still gets posted on various power user article & forum sites, but I haven't seen nearly as many centralized sources for it in the last 5 years or so

Amazon.com

@bitchpeas Oh man. I learned Windows by breaking it and being too poor to have someone else fix it.

VMs?

@bitchpeas Many of the best pen-testers are tired of finding the same things everywhere they go. Read their blogs and they will give you pointers on how to defeat them before they show up. TrustedSec does a great job of this.
