The Big Sleep (1946) based on the Raymond Chandler book of the same name. This celebrated noir stars Humphrey Bogart as the hard boiled detective Phillip Marlowe and Lauren Bacall as the femme fatale. Director Howard Hawk does a great job bringing this story to life and I could go on critiquing it but really it’s a Bogie and Bacall film. Their onscreen chemistry is the stuff of legands. All you are going to do is have your eyes glued to them. Bogart makes a memorable Marlow and he is my second favorite actor to play that role. Just watch it if you haven’t already. Find it to rent on most streaming services or dvd. #noir #Noirvember #filmnoir #film #TCMParty #NoirAlley #classicfilm #movies
@Victoriak I haven't seen this one in a long, long time. Ripe for a rewatch. x
@Victoriak As a Chandler fan (more of him than Bogart) I find this Marlowe to be unconvincing but workable. But you’re spot on to call this a Bogart and Bacall film. I don’t like it as a Big Sleep adaptation but I love it as good #noir.
@Victoriak Loved this movie, although when I first saw it as a kid I didn't completely follow it. That moment seeing it again as an adult and going "Ooooh THAT'S what was happening!" was so fun!
@cjbooker it is definitely standing the test of time
@cjbooker @Victoriak There is a story (perhaps apocryphal) that Chandler and the studio bosses were watching a preview of The Big Sleep.
The person sitting next to Chandler: "What's happening now?"
Chandler: "I have no idea."
@Victoriak I must watch that soon. I probably saw it before but don't remember for sure.
I would love to know what other actor/s have played that role, I must look that up.
I saw the Maltese Falcon for the first time a few months ago. I love those kinds of films.
@Giagia I'm glad you asked. I will be posting more Marlowe films, both official an unofficial, over the next ten days or so
@Victoriak
Oooh, yes please! I'm delighted.
Thank you!
@Victoriak This is one of those movies whose mere mention makes me need to watch it again. Does it always make sense? Not at all. Does that matter? Not at all.
